Jacob Burkhart

In 1880, Jacob (28) and Barbara Burkhart (29) lived in Temperenceville, Somerset Twp., Belmont County, Ohio. Living with them were their children: Benjamin (9), Elizabeth (7), Louisa (5), Layton (3), Harmon (2), and Charles (1 mo.). The two oldest children attended school. Also living in the household were Jacob's brother and sister, Nicholas (24) and Annie (18). Jacob worked as a dry goods merchant. Nicholas and Annie Burkhart were enumerated twice in 1880.. once in Jacob's household, and once in the household of their parents in Malaga Twp., Monroe County, Ohio.

By the time of the 1900 census, Jacob Burkhart (47) rented part of a multi-family dwelling at 367 North Fifth St. in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. The landlord was a 52 year old widow named Nancy Jenkins. Jacob Burkhart lived there with his second wife, Mary (45). Jacob and Mary had been married for 17 years, although the census-taker wrote "30" for Jacob, crossed it out, then wrote 17. This suggests that he married his first wife in 1870 and his second wife in 1883. Also living in the house were three of Jacob's children from his first marriage: Laura (24), Herman (22), and Charles 20); and his two surviving children from his second marriage: Eunice (14) and Paul (6). The two younger children attended school. Jacob worked as a lumber buyer.

In 1910, 58 year old Jacob Burkhart lived with his wife of 27 years, Mary A. (54) on a farm they rented on Newcomerstown and Birmingham Road in Cambridge Twp., Guernsey Co., Ohio. Living with them was their son Paul E. (16). Paul worked on his father's farm. All members of the household were born in Ohio; Jacobs parents were born in Germany; Mary's father in Ireland and her mother in Ohio. Mary had given birth to 6 children 2 of whom were still living.

In 1920, 67 year old Jacob Burkhart lived with his wife Mary A. (65) and their son Paul E. (25) on a farm they rented in Madison, Licking Co., Ohio. Jacob's occupation is listed as lumberman and Paul's as farmer.
