Karl F. Kress

The following note appeared in The Zanesville Signal on 7 Oct 1938:
W.L. Whipkey has named Karl Kress, of Miltonsburg, assistant manager of
the Modern Chevrolet company. Kress, who is well known in Monroe county,
has been connected with the firm as a salesman for the past nine months.

On 14 Oct 1939, the same paper reported:
Karl Kress, manager, Gilbert Kress and Virgil Craig, salesmen of the Modern
Chevrolet company attended a convention held Tuesday [10 Oct 1939] at Charleston,
W. Va. Walter Whipkey, of Moundsville, proprietor of the garage, also attended the
convention.

The Zanesville Signal published the following article on 5 Aug 1952:
WOODSFIELD - General Motors Corp. has announced that Karl Kress, local
Chevrolet-Oldsmobile dealer for the past 14 years, has been appointed to serve next
year as GM community relations chairman for Woodsfield and vicinity. The chair-
manship carries a community service responsibility. GM’s Department of Public
Relations makes available to the public a variety of educational material in the form
of motion pictures, booklets, and presentations. As GM’s community relations
chairman, Kress will be in a position to cooperate with club groups, schools, and
other local organizations which may find the General Motors material of interest for
use in the development of programs.


Vera E. Paulus

Vera Paulus graduated from Woodsfield High School in 1936.

Wedding announcement:
VERA PAULUS NOW MRS. KRESS
Miss Vera Paulus, daughter of Mrs. Jacob Hoff of Woodsfield, became the
bride of Karl F. Kress of Rt. 3 Wednesday morning [26 Jun 1940] and a nuptial high
mass was red by Rev. Father George F. Drescher, pastor of St. John’s Catholic church,
Miltonsburg, following the service. The church was beautifully decorated with roses
and sweet peas for the occasion.
For her wedding Miss Paulus chose a floor-length dress of white taffeta and white
net. It was fashioned with a tight-fitting waist of taffeta, a full skirt of net and it had
puff sleeves. Her shower bouquet was of white roses, blue delphium and baby breath,
tied with white ribbons. Her finger-tip veil of tulle was held at the coiffure by a band of
orange blossoms.
Her bridesmaid, Miss Kathleen Kress of Woodsfield, cousin of the bridegroom, was
in a floor-length gown of aqua lace. Pink rosebuds and baby breath formed her arm bouquet.
The bridegroom’s brother, Oscar Kress, served as best man.
The wedding march by Lohengrin was played by Mrs. Bernard Kress, aunt of the bride-
groom and during the ceremony, her daughter, Mary Margaret Kress sang “Oh Lord I Am
Not Worthy” and “On This Day Oh Beautiful Mother.”
The bride is a graduate of the Woodsfield high school, being a member of the class of ’36.
She is employed as bookkeeper at the Modern Chevrolet garage in Woodsfield. The bride-
groom is a member of the ’33 graduating class of the Woodsfield high school and how holds
the responsible position as manager of the Modern Chevrolet garage.
Mr. and Mrs. Kress will be honored with a wedding dance on Saturday evening at the
Miltonsburg parish hall and on Sunday they will leave for a several days trip through the
East. Upon their return they will begin housekeeping in their newly-furnished apartment in
the Dr. H.S. Koontz residence on North Paul street, Woodsfield. Both Mr. and Mrs. Kress
have many friends who join in extending congratulations and best wishes.

Vera Kress' obituary appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, Ohio) newspaper on November 6, 1968 Mrs. Vera E. Kress WOODSFIELD -- Mrs. Vera Elizabeth Kress, 51, of 110 Maple avenue died at 6 p.m.
Monday (Nov. 4) at University Hospital in Columbus after a three-month illness. Mrs. Kress was born Oct. 17, 1917 in Woodsfield a daughter of Mrs. Rosie Koehler
Huff and the late Jacob Huff. She was a member of St. Sylvester's Catholic church here and the women's club of
the church. Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, Karl; three sons, David of Steubenville
and Phillip and Richard of the home; two daughters, Barbara and Louise of the home and a
brother, Albert Paulus of Bolivar. Another brother, Fred, died in World War II. The body was taken to the Michener Funeral Home here where friends may call and where
the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Thursday. Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Sylvester's church with Msgr.
Robert A. Brown, as celebrant. burial will be in the church cemetery.


Gilbert W. Kress

BUZBEE-KRESS MARRIAGE
Announcement is made of the marriage of Miss June Winnette Buzbee, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Buzbee, of Walters, Okla., to Sergeant Gilbert E.
Kress, son of Mrs. Margaret Kress, of Woodsfield, and the late Frederick
Kress. The wedding took place Saturday, September 12th, at Walters,
Oklahoma.

Sergeant Kress is now stationed at Amarillo Field, Amarillo, Texas. Prior to
his transfer to Amarillo Field, he was an instructor at Sheppard Field,
Witchita Falls, Texas.

His many friends here extend congratulations and best wishes.

Alice S. Kress

WOODSFIELD - Alice L. Buckalew, 77, of 212 Berkley Drive died at 1:10 p.m.
Tuesday (March 18, 2003) at the home of her daughter in Woodsfield. She was
born Aug. 25, 1925, in Miltonsburg, Ohio, to Fredrick and Margaret Bosald
Kress. She was a retired industrial registered nurse for Ormet Corp. at
Hannibal and was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church at Woodsfield.

She was also the first certified IV therapist registered nurse in the state
of West Virginia.

She is survived by her husband, Ralph E. Buckalew; two daughters, Rebecca S.
Baldwin and her husband, Raymond, of Woodsfield and Janet L. Egger and her
husband, James, of Jakarta, Indonesia; two sons, Ralph E. Buckalew II and
his wife, Jennifer, of Melbourne, Fla., and Timothy A. Buckalew and his
wife, Margaret, of Woodsfield; one sister, Edith Reischman and her husband,
Raymond, of Miltonsburg; one brother, George Kress and his wife, Martha, of
Woodsfield; and 12 grandchildren, Anastasia Gates, Jennifer Briggs, Sean
Scott, Benjamin Baldwin, Jason Baldwin, Nathan Baldwin, Kevin Scott,
Fredrick Buckalew, Natascha Buckalew, Austin Buckalew, Ryan Egger and Kyle
Egger.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Grace Ann Joyce; her parents; two
sisters, Florence Schumacher and Marie Cornet; and three brothers, Oscar
Kress, Karl Kress and Gilbert Kress.

Funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St.
Sylvester Catholic Church in Woodsfield with Father David Gaydosik as
celebrant. Burial is in St. Sylvester Catholic Cemetery in Woodsfield.
Friends will be received from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Watters Funeral Home in
Woodsfield. Vigil services are at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.


Asher Okey Paulus

On 5 Jun 1917, 25 year old Asher Okey Paulus filled out a US military draft registration card. He gave his date and place of birth as September 3, 1892 in Woodsfield, Ohio. Asher stated that he was a laborer at Green and Getman in New Matamoris Ohio. He indicated that he had a wife and child whose support he was responsible for. Asher was of medium height and stout build, with blue eyes, black hair and no obvious physical disabilities.

At the time of the 1920 census, Asher O. Paulus (28) and his wife, Rosa E. (31) owned a home on Marietta Street in Center Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Living with them were their two children, Albert D. (age illegible) and Vera E. (2). Albert attended school. Asher worked as a carpenter at an oil field. All members of the house were born in Ohio, as were their parents, with the exception of Rose's father, who was German.


Fred A. Paulus

The following article appeared in the Zanesville Signal on 20 Oct 1944:
WOODSFIELD SOLDIER MISSING IN ACTION
WOODSFIELD - Staff Sgt. Fred Paulus of Woodsfield has been missing in action over Germany since Sept. 27, according to word received today by his mother, Mrs. Rosa E. Hoff.
Sgt. Paulus, a top-turret gunner on a B-24 Liberator, has been in the U.S. Army Air Corps since Aug., 1943. He has been overseas since July, 1944.
The last letter Mrs. Hoff received from her son was Sept. 26, the day before he was reported missing.


Patrick Gallagher

In 1900, Patric Galagher (81) and his wife Catherine (1816) lived with the family of their married daughter Jennie Kress in Independence Twp., Washington County, Ohio. Patric's birthdate in 1900 census is "[month] unknown 1819." Catherine's is "[month] unknown, 1816." The number of years married is blank for the couple. According to the census, Catherine had given birth to one child.

According to the 1900 census, Catherine Gallagher had given birth to only one child.

In the 1900 census, Patrick Gallagher's wife's name is Catherine. Jennie Gallagher's death certificate identifies her parents as Patrick Gallagher and Margaret Cawley.
