John Noll

In 1900, 36 year old farmer John Noll lived on his mortgaged farm in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., Ohio with his 29 year old wife, Rosa, and four children: Emma (9), Francis (7), Nora (4), and Herbert (1). John was born in Ohio to German-born parents.

At the time of the 1910 census, John and Rosa Noll still owned a farm in Enoch Twp. Living with them were their children Emma M. (19), Francis J. (17), Nora M. (14), Hubert E. (11), Katie C. (7), Ida M. (5) and Walter U. (1 yr 10 mos). An eighth child had been born to the couple, but died before 1910. Only Emma and Hubert attended school.

Rosa Saling

In 1900, all four of the children Rosa Saling Noll had given bith to were still living. Rosa and her father were born in Ohio; her mother was born in Germany.

Rosa Noll has not been found in the 1920 census (taken in January of that year) in Noble County. There was a 49 year old widow named Rosa Noll who was an inmate in the Athens State Hospital for the Insane in nearby Athens Coounty, Ohio. It is not known if this is Rosa Saling Noll.

According to Delores Snider, Rose Noll died in 1920 and is buried in St. Mary's in Fulda, OH. The place and exact date of death (from the online Ohio Death Certificate Index) have not been verified. Records conflict on month of birth: Nov 1870 (1900 census) vs. Oct 1870 (Snider).


Leo Leonard Gerst

In 1910, 27 year old farmer Leo L. Gerst lived with his wife Olivia (23) and their children Ramon J. (3) and Bernetta (4 mos) on a farm he owned in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. According to the census, Leo and Olivia had been married for 4 years. Living nearby were August Dimmerling, Ignatz Miller, and Joseph Michel.

On September 12, 1918, self employed farmer, Leo Leonard Gerst (36 - dob May 18, 1882) registered for the military draft. According to his draft registration card, he lived in Caldwell, Noble Co., Ohio and his nearest relative is listed as his wife, Olivia Ottilia Gerst also of Caldwell. His physical description is given as medium height and build, brown eyes and brown hair.

At the time of the 1920 census, Leo Gerst (37) lived with his wife Olivia (35) owned a farm in Enoch Twp. where they lived with their children Raymond (13), Verneta (10), Rayfield (6) and Liova (5). Raymond and Verneta attended school. All members of the household as well as Leo and Olivia's parents were born in Ohio. Listed immediately after the Gerst family was August and Barbara Dimmerling. Also listed on the same census sheet were Sebast Caroline Schockling, Lawrence and Amelia Crum; and Lenord and Eve Michel.

The following article appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on Nov. 15, 1927. (The microfilmed copy is very dark and difficult to read.) FULDA SCHOOL CLOSED CALDWELL, O., Nov. 14 -- Fifteen cases of scarlet fever in
and near Fulda and one at South Olive were reported under
quarantine today by Dr. J. L. Gray, Noble county health com-
missioner. The school at Fulda was closed and no public
meetings will be held until further orders. There are seven cases of the disease in the Clark Black-
stone family in Fulda, four in the Lawrence R. Crum Leo
Gerst family, three and Frank Crum one. There is also
one case of the fever in the Albert J. Crock family, of South
Olive.

In 1930, 47 year old farmer Leo Gerst lived with his wife Dena on a farm they owned (value $500) in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. Living with them were Leo's children from his first marriage Raphael (16) and Leoba (14) and Leo and Dena's children Herman (3 yrs and 7 mos) and Thelma (1 yr 10 mos). Also living with them was Leo's brother-in-law, Ed Hupp (42). Raphael and Leoba attended school. All members of the household as well as Leo and Dena's parents were born in Ohio. The family owned a radio.

Obituary:
CALDWELL - Leo Leonard Gerst, 83, of near Fulda, a retired farmer, died
at 9:45 a.m. Monday (Jan 24 1966) at Summit Acres Nursing Home here. He
had been in failing health. He was born May 18, 1882, a son of Phillip and
Mary Dimmerling Gerst. Mr. Gerst was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic
church at Fulda.
Surviving are his widow, Elizabeth, three sons, Ralphael of Caldwell, Herman
of Navarre, and Donald of Caldwell Route 1; two daughters, Mrs. Thelma Schell
of Caldwell Route 4 and Mrs. Evelyn Rohrig of Navarre; 35 grandchildren and 28
great-grandchildren. Nine children are deceased. Also receding him in death were
his first wife, Olivia Schott and his second wife, Dena Hupp. He was the last of
a family of six children. The body is at Estadt Funeral Home.
Services will be held at St. Mary’s Church in Fulda at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Specific cause of death was "paralysis of bowels result of pressure from child in utero, birth and podalic version."

"Podalic vesion" is an obstetric procedure wherein the fetus is turned within the womb such that one or both feet present through the cervix during childbirth. It is used most often in cases where the fetus lies transversely or in another abnormal position in the womb.

The exact cause of death on the infant's death certificate is "impingement on umbilical cord in breach presentation at birth (still birth)".


John Huffman

At the time of the 1870 census, 27 year old farmer John Huffman lived in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his wife Barbara (23) and children Margaret (3) and Joseph (11 mos). John's real estate was valued at $2500, and his personal property was worth $495. John's household was adjacent to Adam Brahler and John's mother Barbara. He may have owned the house his mother lived in, since she did not own any real estate.

In 1880, John (34) and Barbara (32) Huffman were still living in Enoch Twp. with six children Margaret (13), Joseph (11), Eva (9), Matilda (7), Rachel (5), and Rosa (1). The children (who were all born in Ohio) all attended school except infant Rosa. Adjacent farms in the census were those of Jacob Singer and John Herbst.

On 20 Mar 1884, the Fulda column of The Caldwell Citizens' Press reported:
March 9th, John Huffman and John Harpst each lost a valuable cow.

The following note appeared in The Caldwell Citizens' Press on 10 Jul 1884:
John Huffman has a cow that gave birth to twin calves, that will likely go to the
county fair this fall.

In 1900, 56 year old farmer John Huffman lived on a mortgaged farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 52 year old wife Barbara and three children: Rose (20), Sebastian (18), and Julie (15).


Marie Barbara Hohman

According to the census, seven of Barbara Huffman's nine children were still living in 1900. One of the children who did not survive is believed to be Henry. It is not known who the other one was, since all are accounted for.

Otto John Brahler

Records conflict on date of birth. Delores Snider gives 5 Jan 1890. The Social Security Death Index has 6 Jan 1890.

Church records at the time of his birth list his name as Adolphus. Adolphus is listed as "Otto Brahler" in the 1913 Canton, OH directory with his parents and siblings are listed. His occupation is given as "worker." He would have been about 23 years old and unmarried at the time. In all subsequent records, his name is given as Otto.

In 1920, unmarried Otto Brahler (30) lived in Canton, Ohio with his parents and ten younger siblings. Otto worked as a lineman in a bearing factory.

In 1930, 39 year old Otto Brahler owned a house worth $4200 at 1541 Dublin Ave., Canton, Stark County, Ohio a few doors away from his parents. He lived there with his wife Ida (39) and children Anthony (8), Mary M. (7), Adrian (5), Alvana (2), and Theresa (1). Anthony and Mary both attended school. The family owned a radio set. Otto was employed as a lineman in a bearing factory.

Obituary:

Theresa C. Brahler, age 73, of Canton, passed away Friday June 14, 2002 at Hanover House after an extended illness. Lifetime resident of Canton she was a retired employee of the Timken Company. A 1947 graduate of Lincoln High School. A member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Altar Rosary Society. Preceded in death by her parents, Ida and Otto Brahler, sister, Alvera Brahler, two brothers, Anthony and Adrian Brahler, brother-in-law, Charles L. Babcock Sr., and nephew, Charles L. Babcock Jr. Survived by her sister, Mary M. Babcock of Canton; many nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Mary Brahler of Canton. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Celebrant will be Rev. Edward Beneleit. Entombment at Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday 7-9 p.m. at the Welch-Sekeres-Lewis Funeral Home. Contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. The family would like to give a special Thank you to the entire staff at Hanover House for there loving care.


Emma Barbara Brahler

The 1913 Directory for Canton, OH lists six members of the Brahler family living at 1321 Dueber. One of those is Emma B. Brahler, who would have been about 22 years old at the time. No occupation is listed for Emma.

In 1920, 28 year old Emma Brahler lived with her parents and ten siblings at 1521 Dublin Ave. in Canton, Ohio. Emma worked as a saleslady in a department store.

The 1930 census found 38 year old married Emma McCoy living in a rented home in Canton, Ohio. She had a 28 year old married lodger named Paul Kerr, but the spouses of Emma and Paul were not listed in the household, nor were there any children present. Emma was employed as a clerk in a leather store.


Clemence Joseph Brahler

The 1913 Directory for Canton, OH lists six members of the Brahler family living at 1321 Dueber. One of those is Clement. His occupation is listed as "worker."

At the time of the 1920 census, Clem Brahler (26) lived with his parents and 10 siblings in the family's home at 1521 Dublin Ave., Canton, Ohio. Clem was employed as a repairman in a rubber company.

In 1930, 35 year old Clement J. Brahler rented a house in Plain Twp., Stark Co., OH for $23 a month. He lived there with his wife, Helen (30) and children Richard (5) and Donald (2 yrs 10 mos). The family did not own a radio set. Clement was employed as a grinder in a steel mill.


Helen L. Magel

Several members of the Maple family lived near Helen Maple Brahler in the 1930 census: Howard (27) and Hazel (25) lived next door, and Ross (62) and Emma (53) lived three doors down. The relationship between Helen Maple Brahler and these people is not known. This Ross Maple was not found in the 1920 census index for Ohio.

Dates of birth and death, and second husband's name are based on data in the Social Security Death Index and have not been proven.


Lewis Joseph Bivenour Jr.

Louis Bivenour Jr. is listed with his family in the 1913 Canton (OH) City Directory at 1333 Linden. His occupation is draftsman.


Bertha Maria Brahler

The 1913 Directory for Canton, OH lists six members of the Brahler family living at 1321 Dueber. One of those is Bertha M. Brahler (who would have been about 18 years old at the time). No occupation is listed for Bertha.

At the time of the 1920 census, 24 year old Bertha Brahler lived with her parents and 10 siblings in the family's home at 1521 Dublin Ave., Canton, Ohio. Bertha was employed as a saleslady in a department store.

Bertha died in 1988 at her home at 1353 Duever Ave. NW, Canton, OH.


Clarence Edward Brahler

The 1913 Directory for Canton, OH lists six members of the Brahler family living at 1321 Dueber. One of those is Clarence Brahler, whose occupation is listed as "worker."

At the time of the 1920 census, Clarence Brahler (22) lived with his parents and ten siblings in the family home at 1521 Dublin Ave. in Canton, Ohio. Clarence worked as a reamer for a bearing company.

Clarence Brailer was named as the father on the death certificate of a stillborn infant girl in Canton on 25 Apr 1921. The baby's motherwas Gertrude C. Eberle.

In 1930, 32 year old unmarried Clarence Brahler lived in Canton, Oho with his parents and two younger siblings. He was employed as a reamer in a bearing factory.

According to the Ohio death certificate index, 78 year old Clarence Brahler was married at the time of his death. He was a resident of Stark County, Ohio.


Clyde John Brahler Sr.

Clyde Brahler and his twin William are not lsited with the family in the 1900 census because only individuals living in the house on 01 June 1900 were counted. Clyde and William were born a day too late.

At the time of the 1920 census, Clyde Brahler (19) lived with his parents and ten siblings in the family's home at 1521 Dublin Ave., Canton, Ohio. Clyde was employed as a painter in a rubber factory.

In 1930, 29 year old Clyde Brahler rented a house at 1417 Park Ave. SW, Canton, Stark Co., Ohio. Rent was $35 a month. Clyde lived there with his wife Louise (32) and children Clyde Jr. (5) and Phyllis (1 yr 6 ms). The family did not own a radio set. Clyde's trade was "automator man" in a bearing factory, but he was not employed at the time of the census.

William Carl Brahler

Clyde Brahler and his twin William are not listed with the family in the 1900 census because only individuals living in the house on 01 June 1900 were counted. Clyde and William were born a day too late.

In 1920, 19 year old William Brahler lived with his parents and ten siblings in the family's home at 1521 Dublin Ave., Canton, Ohio. William was employed as an operator in a bearing factory.

At the time of his death, William worked as an operator at the Timken Co.
