Earl John Brahler

Earl Brahler is not listed in the 1913 Canton, OH directory, presumably because he would have been 9 years old at the time.

In 1930, 26 year old unmarried lived in Canton with his parents and two siblings. He worked as a store keeper in a bearing factory.


Joseph Philip Hohman

Joseph Hohman moved from Noble Co., OH to Mercer Co., OH around 1900.

In 1900, Joseph Hohman (26 - May 1874) lived with his wife of 4 years, Rosie (26 - September 1873) and daughters, Etta (2 - August 1897) and Alice (1 - March 1899) in a rented home in Marion Twp., Mercer Co., Ohio. Joseph worked as a teacher. All members of the household were born in Ohio.

In 1910, 36 year old public school teacher, Joseph P. Homan(sic) lived with his wife of 14 years, Rosie (36) in a house in Recovery Twp., Mercer Co., Ohio. Living with them were their children Henrietta (12), Alice (11), Agnes (9), Marie (7), Edmund (4), Norbert (2) and Northburger (11 mos). Henrietta , Alice, Agnes and Marie attended school. All members of the household were born in Ohio as were Joseph's parents and Rosie's father. Rosie's mother was born in Pennsylvania.

The family moved to Fort Wayne, IN in 1917.

On April 12, 1918, Joseph Philip Hohman (44 - May 1, 1874) of 1530 Buchold St., Fort Wayne, Allen Co., Indiana registered for the military draft. His nearest relative is lsited as Rose M. Hohman of the same address. He was employed as a night watchman by New(?) Publishing Co., (?) of Main St., Fort Wayne, Allen Co., Indiana. His physical description is given as: height: medium; build: medium; eyes: blue; hair: light brown.

In 1920, Joseph P. Hohman (45) lived with his wife Rose M. (46) at 1530 Barthold St., Fort Wayne (Ward 9), Wayne Twp., Allen Co., Indiana. Living with them were their children Henrietta (22), Alice (20), Agnes (18), Marie (16), Norbert (12), Northburta (10), Ida (8), Walter (6), Warner (4 yrs 5 mos) and Mildred (2 yrs 3 mos). Joseph worked as a watchman at a railroad stop (?), Henrietta as a time clerk at an electric works, Alice as a hooper(?), Agnes as a packer of baked goods and Marie as an office clerk at an electric works. Norbert, Northburta, Ida and Walter attended school. According to the census, Joseph and Rose as well as Joseph's parents and Rose's father were born in Indiana; Rose's mother was born in Pennsylvania; all of the children, except Mildred, are shown as born in Ohio and Mildred in Indiana.

At the time of the 1930 census, 55 year old Jos. P. Hohman lived with his wife Rose M. (55) in a home they owned (value $5000) at 1530 Barthold St., Fort Wayne (Ward 9), Wayne Twp., Allen Co., Indiana. Living with them were their children Henrietta (32), Agnes (28), Marie (26), Edward (24), Norbert (22), Elizabeth (20), Ida (19), Walter (15), Warner (14) and Mildred (12). Joseph worked as a grocer in a grocery store; Henrietta as a registered nurse at an electric plant; Agnes as a stenographer at an electric plant; Marie as a time clerk at an electric plant; Edward as a grinder at an electric plant; Norbert as an apprentice lineman for city light; Ida did general office work for an insurance company; and Walter and Warner were newsboys. Walter, Warner and Mildred attended school. All family members were born in Ohio except Mildred who was born in Indiana. According to the census, both Joseph's and Rose's parents were born in Ohio. the family owned a radio set.


Henrietta Elizabeth Hohman

Henrietta was a registered nurse. She never married.


Alice Marie Hohman

Alice Hohman has not been found in the 1930 census. It is believed that she died about 9 months after the census was taken that year.


John Maurice Hohman

In 1870, 22 year old Morris Hohman lived and worked on his parents farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County Ohio.

At the time of the 1880 census, Morris Hohman (32) lived in Enoch Twp., Noble Co. with his pregnant wife Elizabeth (31) and their children Joseph (6) and Amandus (4). Also living with them was Morris' younger brouther Amandus (20). No one in the household attended school that year. Morris Hohman's farm was listed in the census between the households of John Noll Jr. and Morris' father, Joseph Hohman.

From the Fulda column of The Caldwell Citizens' Press on 8 Mar 1883:
Saturday March 3d, as Morris Homan was driving five head of cattle, which
he had sold to F. A. Hupp, one of them broke one of its legs, and he was
compelled to kill it. Loss $27.


In 1900, 52 year old Maurize Homan lived on a farm that he owned in Enoch Twp., Noble County Ohio, with his 51 year old wife Elizabeth and their six youngest children: John (19), Simon (18), Henry (14), Emil (12), Eva (10), and Amelia (7). John, who was born in Ohio to German-born parents, could not read or write English (although he did speak it).


Elizabeth Huffman

Elizabeth was born in Ohio to German-born parents. She could not write English, but she was able to read and speak the language. In 1870, 21 year old Elizabeth lived with her widowed mother in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio in a house that was probably owned by Elizabeth's brother John. All eight of Elizabeth Huffman Hohman's children were living at the time of the 1900 census.

Elizabeth Huffman Hohman's obituary appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal on June 11, 1936 Last rites for Mrs Elizabeth Hohman, 87, were held Wednesday
morning from St. Mary's Catholic church at Fulda and burial was
made in the church cemetery. Mrs. Hohman passed away at the home of a son, Henry Hohman,
Fulda community, following a lingering illness. Surviving are five
children: Henry, neary Fulda; Mangus, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Emil, near
Caldwell; Joseph, Port Zane [Fort Wayne?] , Ind.; and one daughter,
a nun in a convent at Nursery, [Hershey?] Pa.

Samuel Simon Hohman

In 1900, 18 year old Simon Homan lived and worked on his parents farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. He spoke English, but could not read or write.


Amelia M. Hohman

Amelia Hohman entered the convent as Sister Mary Hildegard.


Louis Joseph Bivenour

In 1910, 52 year oold Louis Bivenour lived in Canton, Stark Co., OH with his 58 year old wife Margaret, and six sons: Walter (23), Anthony (19), Louis (16), Charles (13), and Wallace (10). Louis' mother Harriet (82) also lived with them.

In 1913, Louis J. Bivenour is listed in the Canton (OH) City Directory with his wife and three of his sons (Charles, Louis, and Walter). His occupation is listed as "saloon."

Anthony is not listed in the 1913 Canton City Directory with his parents and brothers.

Helena E. Thompson

By 1900, 24 year old Helena Thompson Brahler had given birth to two children, both of whom were alive at the time of the census. Lena and her parents were born in Ohio. She was able to read and write.

When Lena's son Andrew was killed in France in World War I, his military record stated that his mother, Lena Hopper, of 219 Harrison St., Zanesville, was notified of his death.

In 1920, Lena Hopper lived with her husband Bruce Hopper (28), a coal miner, her two youngest children Pearl and Edna, and her ex-husband, Henry Brahler.

In 1930, "Lena Brahler" (54) lived with her daughter and son-in-law Edna and Frank White in Zanesville. Also residing in the house was Lena's sister, Margaret Thompson Sorg (62) and 35 year Bruce Hopper, who is listed as an unmarried boarder. Lena is identified as a widow, despite the fact that both Henry Brahler and Bruce Hopper were still alive.

Lena Brahler lived in Zanesville at the time of her mother's death in 1932.

Lena Brahler’s obituary was published in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 5 Apr 1933:
BRAHLER FUNERAL THURSDAY
ST. THOMAS CHURCH
Funeral services for Mrs. Lena E. Brahler, 57, of 703 Dresden road, who died Monday night in Good Samaritan hospital, will be held at 9 o’clock Thursday morning at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Burial will be made in Zanesville Memorial Park.
Surviving Mrs. Brahler are four daughters, Mrs. Pearl Gooden, Mrs. Harkace Pryor, Mrs. Ralph Bunting and Mrs. Orrie Lewis of this city, eight grandchildren, three brothers and three sisters, Joseph, Ernest and William Thompson, Mrs. Adam Sorg, Mrs. Henry Ritterbeck and Mrs. Lawrence Jones, all of Noble county.


On 31 Mar 1937, the following memorial notice ran in the classified ads on page 10 of the Zanesville Times Recorder:

Hiram Nelson Thompson

The family moved from Fulda, Noble County, OH to Fox settlement, Washington Co., OH in 1874.

In 1880, farmer Nelson Thompson (33) lived in Ludlow Twp., Washington Co., OH with his wife Mary A. (33) and children Margaret (8), John (6), Helena (4), and Emily (2).

They must have moved back to Noble County, because children born between 1883 and 1889 were baptized at St. Mary's in Fulda.

Records conflict on name: Delores Snider has "John Nelson Thompson." CJ Patterson has "Hiram Nelson Thompson" 1900 and 1910 census have "Nelson Thompson"

In 1900, 59 year old farmer Nelson Thompson lived on a rented farm in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 56 year old wife Mary and four of their children: Cordelia (19), Joseph (16), William (13), and Ernest (11). Ten years later, the household consisted of Nelson (62), Mary A. (61), and two unmarried sons, William F. (28?), and Ernest L. (21).


Maria Anna Warner

Records conflict on dates. Delores Snider has 1 May 1848 - 1886. CJ Patterson has 15 May 1847 - 3 Jan 1932. 1900 census birthdate as May 1848.

In 1900, eight of Mary Warner Thompson's nine children were still living. Mary was born in Ohio to German-born parents.

Obituary:
THOMPSON RITES ARE HELD TODAY AT SUMMERFIELD
Summerfield, O., Jan 5. - Mrs. Mary Ann Thompson, 84,
widow of Nelson Thompson, who died at 5:30 Sunday morning at
the home of her daughter, Mrs. Adam Sorg, south of here, from heart
trouble, were conducted at 10 o’clock this morning in St. Michaels
Catholic church, Berne, by Rev. Anthony Tague. Burial was made
in the church cemetery with Brubach and Dearth, funeral directors,
in charge.
Deceased was a daughter of John and Margaret Warner and
was born and raised near Fulda but the greater part of her life was lived
in the Berne community.
Surviving her are the following children, Mrs. Lena Brahler
and Mrs. Cora Jerles, Zanesville; Mrs. Sorg, Mrs. Emma Ritterbeck,
Joseph and William Thompson, Summerfield Rt. 2, and Ernest Thomp-
son, Berne. She is also survived by one brother, Joseph Warner, Fulda;
36 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

Mary Ann and her brother Joseph were the last surviving siblings of the John Warner family. Joseph died six days after Mary Ann.


William I. Thompson

Accorrding to the 1933 obituary of his sister, Lena Thompson Brahler, William lived in Noble County.


Gerald Thompson

Gerald Thompson is listed as the youngest child in the family by Delores Snider, but no date of birth is given. HE did not appear in the 1900 or 1910 census, and is presumed to have died.


Pearl F. Gooden

On May 31, 1917. Pearl Gooden filled out a draft registration card. His address was 225 Pierce St., Zanesville, Ohio. He worked as a carpenter for D. E. Heinke & Co. in Canton. The form noted that he had a wife and three children. He was of medium height, and slender build with brown hair and brown eyes.

At the time of the 1920 census, Pearl (25) and Frona (23) Gooden rented a home at 121 Van Buren St. in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. Other members of the household were their children, Margaret (6), Doris (5 yrs 3 mos), Cleo (2 yrs 11 mos), and Dwight (less than one month old), and Frona's unmarried sister, Cora Brahler (17). No one in the home attended school. Pearl was a self-employed carpenter. Cora worked as a laundress in a laundry.

In 1930, Pearl F. Gooden (35) and his wife Frona (33) owned a home worth $3000 at 121 VanBuren in Zanesville. Also living in the home were their children, Margaret (16), Doris (15), Cleo (13) and Dwight (10). All of the children attended school. Pearl Gooden was employed as a carpenter for a lumber company. Everyone in the household was born in Ohio, as were their parents. The Gooden family did not own a radio set. Dwight and Frona were 18 and 15 years old, respectively, when they were married.

Mr. and Mrs. Pearl Gooden and daughter, Cleo,
have returned to this city [Zanesville] after visiting his brother
and family in Canton.

This brief article was published on page 5 of The Zanesville Signal on 25 Aug 1950:
PEARL GOODENS OBSERVE 38th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
Mr. and Mrs. Pearl Gooden of Buckeye Lake,
formerly of this city [Zanesville] observed their 38th
wedding anniversary with a party last night at their
home.
Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Dwight
Gooden and daughters, Mareta and Barbara Lee, Mr.
and Mrs. Ralph Kindall and daughters, Linda Lee,
and Miss Cleo Gooden, all of Zanesville, and Mr. and
Mrs. Norman Taylor of Lorain.

The following note appeared in the "Interesting News Briefs" column of the Zanesville Times Recorder on 6 Mar 1952:
Mr. and Mrs. Pearl Goodent and daughter, Cleo,
have returned home from a three months visit in Florida.
They visited in West Palm Beach, Bradenton and Miami.

The Zanesville Signal contained an article about the Gooden's 40th anniversary on 26 Aug 1952:
FAMILY AFFAIR AT KENDALL HOME ON ANNIVERSARY
Mr. and Mrs. Pearl Gooden of Buckeye lake
were honored at a surprise dinner Sunday in the home
of their don-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph
Kendall of 805 Dryden road. The affair marked their
40th wedding anniversary.
A large anniversary cake was used in the
decorations and a color scheme of pink and white
was carried out.
The Goodens are the parents of a son,
Dwight Gooden of Eppley avenue, who is in Cali-
fornia on business and was unable to be present,
and three daughters, Cleo of the home, Mrs. Nor-
man Taylor of Lorain, and Mrs. Kendall. Mrs.
Taylor could not attend because of illness.
Also present in addition to the hostess
and honored guests and Miss Gooden were Mrs.
Dwight Gooden and daughters, Marcia and Bar-
bara.

This brief note appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 10 Feb 1953:
Mr. and Mrs. Pearl Gooden returned to
their home in Buckeye Lake after a six week vaca-
tion visiting their son, Dwight Gooden and family
in El Sequendo, Calif. They also visited Mrs. Good-
en's sister, Mrs. Jack Speer, in Barstow, Calif.,
and her niece, Mrs. Max Samos in Santa Marie,
and Mr. Gooden's aunt, Mrs. Albert Gooden, in
Long Beach. Enroute home they visited friends
in Mexico and other western points.

Pearl Gooden was a resident of Buckeye Lake, Licking County, Ohio at the time of his death.

Miss Cleo Gooden of 805 Dryden road has
returned home after visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Pearl Gooden in Hebron. Miss Donna Bunting of 654
Spangler Drive spent the week-end at the Gooden

Raymond F. Kessler

Raymond Kessler’s obituary was published in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 11 Mar 1927:
RAYMOND F. KESSLER DIES OF PNEUMONIA
Raymond F. Kessler, 28, died at 1:!5 o’clock Thursday
morning at his home, 713 Muskingum avenue following a
brief illness of pneumonia. He had been ill but five days.
Mr. Kessler was an employee of the Youngstown Sheet
& Tube Co., and was affiliated with the Zanesville Greys base-
ball team as ticket collector. He was a member of St. Thomas
Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Fraternal
Order of Eagles and is survived by his widow and one daugh-
ter at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kessler and one
sister, Mrs. Morgan McCarty, all of this city.
Funeral services will be held at 9 o’clock Saturday morning
from St. Thomas church. Burial in Mt. Olive cemetery. The pall-
bearers will be chosen from the members of the baseball team.

Excerpts from another obituary in the same paper described Raymond's love for a local team:
Raymond F. Kessler was perhaps the best known of all the
baseball fans of this city. For eight years he was "on the gate"
at the local park, where his genial disposition and sunny char-
acter won him legions of friends. He accompanied the Greys
on all road trips and in his death the local club will lose one of
its most ardent supporters.

Cora Margaret Brahler

at the home of Miss Stella Brown, of North Ninth street.

At the time of the 1920 census, 17 year old Cora Brahler lived with her sister and brother-in-law, Frona and Pearl Gooden, and their children in a rented home at 121 Van Buren St. in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. Cora did not attend school. She was employed as a laundress in a laundry.

In 1930, 27 year old widow Cora Kessler and her daughter Maxine (7) owned a home at 126 Van Buren Ave. in Zanesville. Maxine attended school. Both were natives of Ohio, as were their parents. Cora worked as a trimmer in a tile plant, although the census reported that she had been out of work for 30 days. Cora did not own a radio set. (The family was found under the name "Hessler" in the census index.)

Obituary of Harkace Pryor, published in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 22 Jul 1973:
Harkace E. Pryor, 72, of 611 Echo avenue, a
retired Pure Oil Company employe, died at 2:12
a.m. Saturday in Good Samaritan Medical Center
where he had been a patient two weeks.
He was born May 22, 1901 in Middelburg, a
son of James and Martha Morrison Pryor. Mr.
Pryor attended the church of Christ.
Surviving are his widow, Cora Brahler Pryor;
a step-daughter, Mrs. Stanley A. (Maxine) Sheck
of Route 5; a sister, Mrs. Mary (Mae) Fleeman
of Lower Salem, five step-grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews.
Six sisters and four brothers are deceased.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Monday in the Putnam Avenue Chapel of Bolin
Funeral Home.

Edna Agnes Brahler

From the Zanesville Signal, on 24 Jun 1927:
INFIDELITY CHARGE MADE IN PETITION
Edna Harmer, aged 19, of 341 Putnam avenue,
through her mother, Lena Hooper, filed suit for divorce
against Lewis Harmer, Central avenue, in common
pleas court Thursday afternoon, alleging gross neglect
and faiure to provide.
The petition states that they were married May 29,
1924, and are the parents of one child. The defendant
is also accused of keeping company with a ward of
juvenile court. Attorney Perry Smith represents the plaintiff.

The couple's divorce was finalized in 1929, according to a brief note in the Zanesville Signal on July 13th of that year.

In April 1930, Edna A. Brahler lived on Springfield Ave. in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio with her second husband Frank H. White, and two children from her first marriage: Ruth A. Harmer (4 yrs 2 mos) and Richard A. Harmer (2 yrs 5 mos). Also living in the house was Edna's mother, Lena H. Brahler, who is identified as a widow, even though her husband Henry Brahler lived to at least the ripe old age of 86 (1953). Lena's sister, Margaret Thompson Sorg (62) is also in the house, as is a boarder named Bruce Hopper (35). Edna's sister, Pearl Brahler Bunting lived a short distance away on the same street.

In an article about the third wedding anniversary of Cora Brahler and Hark Pryor, the guests include "Mr. and Mrs. Russell Stemm, and daughter Ruth, and son Richard Harmer." (Zanesville Times Recorder, 1 Dec 1934).

The 1947 wedding announcement of Edna's son Richard Harmer gives his mother's name as Mrs. Enda Gordon of Santa Maria, Calif.

A brief note in the 1953 Zanesville Times Recorder stated that Frona Brahler Gooden traveled to Barstow Calif. to visit her sister, Mrs. Jack Speer.

Henry Brahler's 1957 obituary states that one of his children was Mrs. Robert Hartley of Barstow, Calif.

Edna's social security number was issued in Ohio prior to 1951.

According to her grandson, Paul Brand, Edna only had two children: Ruth and Richard Harmer.
