Notes

Frank H. White

In 1930, Frank White (24) owned a house worth $3000 at 328 Springfield Ave. in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. He lived there with his wife, two children from her first marriage, his mother in law and her sister, and his mother-in-law's second husband, Bruce Hopper, who was listed as an unmarried boarder. In addition, a portion of the house was rented for $15 a month to the three-person Cronin family, who also had a lodger. Frank White's parents were born in Iowa. All four of the adult males in the household were kiln-setters in a china factory, but none were employed at the time of the 1930 census. The White family owned a radio set, which hopefully provided entertainment to the eight unemployed adults and three children living in the house.

John Herbst

Records conflict on place of birth:
1860 census -- Hesse
1870 census -- Ohio
Since records for his older sisters indicate that they were born in America, it is assumed that John was born here as well.

In 1860, 19 year old farmer John "Harper," lived with his parents and younger sister in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. He attended school during the previous year.

In 1870, 27 year old John "Harpst" lived in Enoch Twp. with his wife Barbara (24) and their infant daughter Caroline (6 months). Adjacent farms in the census belonged to John's in-laws, Adam and Elizabeth Schafer, and his parents, Andrew and Beata Harpst.

At the time of the 1880 census, John Herbst (38) and his wife Barbara lived in Enoch Twp. with their six children: Caroline (10), Lewis (7), Leonard (6), Andrew (4), Margaret (2), and Kate (8 mos). Caroline and Lewis attended school that year. Also living with them was John's 71 year old widowed mother, Bertha. Neighboring households in the census were those of Henry Huffman and Adam Schafer.

The following note appeared in the "Fulda Locals" section of The Caldwell Citzens' Press on 29 Dec 1881:
John Herbert recently lost a valuable cow.

John apparently did not have much luck with cows. On 20 Mar 1884, the Fulda column of The Caldwell Citizens' Press reported:
March 9th, John Huffman and John Harpst each lost a valuable cow.

From the Fulda column of The Caldwell Citizens' Press, 29 May 1884:
John Hespot and John Singer lost their spring colts last week.

Barbara Roehrig

Records conflict on date of birth:
1843 Snider
1846 1850 & 1900 census,
1844 1860 census

In 1900, 53 year old widow Barbara Harbst owned a mortgaged house at 725 Helena Ave. in Braddock, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania where she lived with four of her children: Edward (18), Mary (15), Cecilia (11) and Elizabeth (10), and two grandchildren, John (6) and Clara (3) Brahler -- the children of Barbara's oldest child, Caroline Herbst Brahler. Cecilia and Elizabeth attended school. Also boarding in the house were several Fulda natives: Joseph Schaffer (30), Alexander Crock (21) and Charles Hockman (Hohman?) (26). Barbara's son Leonard lived next door. Everyone in the home was born in Ohio. Joseph Schaffer and Alexander Crock were nephews of Barbara's late husband, John Herbst.

Seven of Barbara's ten children were still living at the time of the 1900 census. One of the deceased children was her fourth child, Andrew. It is not known who the other deceased children were. Oddly, the 1910 census states that 8 of Barbara's 10 children were alive.

By 1910, Barbara Herbst owned the home at 725 Helena St. free and clear. She lived there with her three adult unmarried daughters, Mary (25), Ceceliia (22), and Elizabeth (20), and grandchildren John (16) and Clara (13) "Praler." Only Clara attended school.

In 1920, 38 year old unmarried Katherine Herbst lived with her sisters Mary (35) and Cecelia (33) Herbst and her niece Clara Brahler (23) in a rented home at the rear of 114 Corey Ave. in Braddock Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Mary was not employed, Katherine worked as a presser in a laundry and Cecelia and Clara as armature winders in an electric plant. All members of the household were born in Ohio, Mary's parents were born in West Virginia.

In 1930, 44 year old unmarried Mary T. Herbst lived with her sisters Katherine (49) and Cecelia (42) Herbst in a rented home (rent $25/mo) on Corry Ave. in Braddock Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Mary was not employed, Katherine worked as a laundress in a public laundry and Cecelia as a coil winder in an electric plant.

All members of the household were born in Ohio, Mary's parents were born in West Virginia. Living a few doors away from the Herbst sisters was the family of William Huffman. William's mother, Rosina Brahler Huffman, was a native of Fulda.

Ottilia Cecilia Herbst

The daughter between Mary and Elizabeth Herbst is referred to as Cecilia in the 1900 and 1910 census, and her birthdate (in 1900) is given as Jun 1888. It is beleived that Ottilia and Cecelia are the same person.

In 1910, 22 year old Cecila Herbst lived with her widowed mother, two sisters, and a niece and nephew at 725 Helena St., Braddock, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Cecilia worked as a winder at the electric works.

Andrew Herbst

Census records conflict on place of birth. 1850 census says Germany; 1870 says Ohio.

1850 Census, Monroe County, Ohio -- Enoch Township 424-425
Andrew Harps, 53, Germany, Farmer
Beata (?), 42, Germany
Elizabeth, 11, Virginia, attended school
Mary, 9, Ohio, attended school
John, 7, Ohio
Caroline, 1, Ohio
Adjacent farms in the census were those of George Miller and Cornelius Wells.

Noble County was formed in 1851 out of portions of Washington, Monroe, Morgan, and Guernsey Counties.
The Fulda area, where the family lived, was in Monroe County before the formation of Noble County.

1860 Census, Noble County, Ohio -- Enoch Township
Andrew Harper, 66, farmer $12,000-$500. Hesse
Ada, 60, Hesse, domestic
John, 19, Hesse, farmer, attended school
Caroline, 11, Ohio, attended school
Neighboring households in the census were those of 74 year old widow Margaret (Weber) Hohman, and John (60) and Margaret (61) Yeager.

In 1870, 74 year old Andrew Harpst lived in Enoch Twp. Noble County, Ohio with his wife Beata (68). Andrew and his wife were born in Hesse-Cassel. He did not own any real estate, and there is nothing listed for the value of his personal property. Andrew's occupation is "supported by son." Adjacent farms in the census belonged Andrew's son, John Harpst and Eve Clever.

Also enumerated in the household in 1870 were the Herbst's granddaughter, Katherine Shafer (7), and a 20 year old Ohio-born day laborer, John Roarch. John Roarch's parents were foreign-born. There is a cross (+) to the left of the names of John Roarch and Katherine Shafer. A note at the bottom of the census page states "belongs to Family 127." Family 127 is Andrew's son John Herbst. It's not entirely clear what the census-taker meant. Clearly, Katherine Shafer is not a member of John Herbst's immediate family... she is his wife's niece. Perhaps Katherine Schafer and John Roarch lived in the household of John Herbst, but the census-taker forgot to include them, then started to enumerate the next household (Andrew Herbst) after which he added the names of Katherine Shafer and John Roarch. John Roarch is believed to be Barbara Roehrig Herbst's younger brother.

Beata Ada

In 1880, 71 year old widow Bertha Herbst lived with the family of her son John in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. According to the census, she was born in Hesse.

William E. Coyne

In 1930, William (36) and Stella (34) Coyne owned a home worth $8000 at 768 Brentwood in Youngstown, Ohio. There were no children in the household.

According to his death certificate, 39 year old William Coyne was a foreman at a sheet and tube steel mill.

Maria Stella Brahler

Alternate first name: Estella.
