Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

August Dimmerling Sr.

Twenty-five -year old August Dimmerling and his future wife, Elizabeth Block, 25, (Blake), arrived in Philadelphia on July 9, 1836 on the "Ship Plato". The passenger list notes he was from Kleinlueder in Fulda County, Germany. It is doubtful anyone has searched the Archives in Fulda, Germany for family history as this is a recent discovery. They set sail from Cuxhaven which is near Bremen.

They traveled with Melchior Block, Johann Wehner, John Mueller, George Mueller, Franz Ebert, and Adam Schafer and family. Most came to America with their future wives. It is possible some of them married in Germany in Civil ceremonies before arriving in America, which was the custom.

Holy Trinity, a Germany immigrant Church in downtown Philadelphia in this era, was the place of many marriages for this group. August and Elizabeth married there on August 15, 1836. Franz Ebert and Melchior Block also married the same day.

Holy Trinity lists the following births for the Dimmerlings: Michael, born January 1, 1837, and Gertrude, born July 4, 1838. Melchior and Gertrude (Hohmann) Block were sponsors for both.

"August Dimmerling Sr. left Germany in 1836 to escape two years compulsory service in the army. He worked on the docks at Philadelphia for four years before coming to Noble County. It was in Philadelphia that his oldest children, two girls, were born." (source: Keith Schockling)

According to "History of Noble County, Ohio, 1887" Michael Blake, August Dimmerling (husband of Elizabeth Blake), and Francis Ebert (husband of Maria Anna Blake) came to Enoch Township (then in Monroe County, Ohio) from Philadelphia in 1840, . The relationship (if any) between Maria Anna, Elizabeth, and Michael Blake/Block is unknown. Maria Anna and Elizabeth may have been sisters, since their fathers had the same name (Valentine).

At the time of the 1850 census, 39 year old farmer Gustus Dimmerling lived with his 39 year old wife Elizabeth in Enoch Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Their children were Catherine (12), John (10), Mary (8), Elizabeth (6), Augustus (4), and Joseph (9 months). Only Catherine and John attended school. The Dimmerling farm was worth $800. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Francis Abbet (Ebert) and William Craige.

In 1870, farmer August Dimmerling (59) lived in Enoch Twp., with his wife Elizabeth (59) and children Joseph (20), Henry (18), and Sebastian (15). Also living in the house was 10 year old Catherine Smith. Catherine is believed to have actually been Gertrude Smith, the granddaughter of August Dimmerling. (August's daughter, Catherine Gertrude, and her husband, Henry Smith, both died in 1862, leaving two orphan children under the age of 7.) Sebastian and Catherine both attended school in 1870. Adjacent households in the census belonged to John Weisent and John Blake. The relationship between John Blake and August Dimmerling's wife (Elizabeth Blake Dimmerling) is not known.
