Catherine Peros

Sources conflict on surname:

Ignatz Enos Hohman

Ignatz and Regina (Sterangel) Hohman moved to Washington Co., OH in 1868.

Johann Mauritius Hohmann

Maurice Hohman married Katherine Gass and stayed behind in Germany after his parents and younger siblings emmigrated to America. He took over his parents' house.

Mauritz Hohmann age 34 immigrated to the United Sates aboard the ship Holland together with his wife Catherine (38) and children Ignatz (10), Augustus (6), Francesco (5), and Frederich (1). The ship sailed from Bremen, Germany and arrived in New York on August 8, 1845.

He later came to Enoch Twp. (then part of Monroe Co., OH) in 1845, probably via Wheeling.

At the time of the 1850 census, 39 year old German-born farmer Morris Hammond lived in Stock Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife Catherine (43) and children Enos (14), Augustis (10), Franceska (8), Ferdinand (6), Philloman (5), Mary B (2), and Matilda (1). The oldest three children were born in Germany. Ferdinand was born at sea, indicating that the family came to America in 1843. (The 1870 census entry for Philomena states that she was born at sea.) The youngest three children were born in Ohio. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to John Roehrig and Elijah Archer.

In 1860, 49 year old farmer Maurice Hohman lived in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., Ohio with his 50 year old wife Catherine and their four children: Frances (18), Ferdinand (17), Philomena (14), and Matilda (13). All four children attended school. The three older children were born in Hesse; Matilda was born in Ohio. Neighboring families in the census were Frank Fisher and Maurice's brother Joseph Hohman.

In 1870, Morris Hohman (59) still lived in Enoch Twp. Members of the household included his wife, Katherine (64), daughter Matilda (21), son Ferdinand (26) and daughter-in-law Mary (21). Ferdinand and his parents are listed as being born in Hesse Cassel; Matilda and Mary in Ohio. Adjacent households in the census belonged to J. William Johanning and widow Margaret Yeager. Morris Hohman's home was two households away from the parish rectory.

Delores Snider lists two children born to J. Morris and Katherine Hohman on 30 Jun 1849: Matilda and Mary. However, Mary does not appear in any census, although Matilda appears in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census with her parents and siblings.

This researcher (L. Coburger) believes that there was only one child born on that date: Matilda. It's possible that the confustion stems from the 1870 census, in which there are two 21 year old women in the house: Matilda and Mary. Matilda's occupation is "helps mother." Mary's occupation is "helps mother in law." The words "in law" are easy to miss, since they're written very small above the words "helps mother." Listed immediately before Mary is Ferdiand Hohman. Ferdinand married Mary Smithberger on 15 Feb 1870, a few months before the census.

Katherina Anna Gass

In 1880, 75 year old widow Catherine Hohman lived with the family of her son, Ferdinand, in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio.

Wigbert or Mauritz Hohman

The Hohman family came to America around 1844. Twelve year old Wigbert does not appear with the family in the 1850 census; it is presumed that he died prior to that time.

Mary Barbara Hohmann

Mary Barbara Hohman is not listed with her parents and sublings in the 1860 census. She is presumed to have died before that time.

John Valentine Gerst

Moved with parents to Marietta, OH in 1871, when he was about 9 years old.

In 1930, John V. Gerst (65) and his wife Margaret (60) rented an apartment for $82.50 a month at 660 Maryland Ave. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Living with them was a 23 year old Colorado-born lodger named Stanley Young. John Gerst was employed as a wholesale grocery salesman. The couple did not own a radio set. Margaret's parents were born in Northern Ireland.

John Gerst's obituary appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on July 27, 1940.
JOHN GERST CALLED
John Gerst, 77, native of Noble county, died at his home in Pittsburgh,
Pa., Monday and the body was taken to Marietta Wednesday, where
funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon by Rev. William
Robbin. Burial was made in Memorial Park in that city.
Mr. Gerst was a son of John and Elizabeth Gerst, and was born at Fulda
seven miles east of Caldwell. His wife, Mrs. Margaret McGraw Gerst, died
four years ago. He is survived by one daughter, Miss Vera Gerst of the
home.

Joseph John Blake

Joseph Blake is not listed with the family in the 1860 census. He was living nearby with the family of his aunt and uncle Maria Anna (Hohman) and Jacob Schott. Maria Anna Hohman Schott is the sister of Joseph's mother Gertude Hohman Blake.

In 1880, Joseph Blake (26) lived in Enoch Twp. with his wife Teresa (22) and their daughters Barbara (2) and Blandina (3 mos). The census-taker, who visited the Blake household on 19 Jun 1880, indicates that Balndina was 3 months old, and that she was born in Sept, leaving his mathmatical skills in doubt. Adjaent farms in the census belonged to (Henry) Joseph Miller Sr. and G. W. Addlesparger.

In 1900, 46 year old farmer Joseph Blake lived on a farm that he owned in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 41 year old wife Theresa and their seven children: Ida B. (21), Matilda (16), Rosa (13), Emma (12), Frederick (8), Sophia (6), and Albert (3). Joseph was born in Ohio to German-born parents.

At the time of the 1910 census, Joseph J. (55) and Thersia (51) Blake still owned a farm in Enoch Twp. Living with them were their children Emma H. (22), Fred A. (18), Sophia M. (16), and Albert A. (13). Only Albert attended school. According to the census, Joseph and the children were natives of Ohio. When recording Theresa's birthplace, it looks like the census taker wrote "Virginia," and then crammed a "W" in the space before the word as an afterthought. Joseph and Theresa's parents were from Germany.

In the 1931 obituary of his brother, George, Joseph is named as the last surviving member of the family, living in Indiana.

Joseph died at his home 2306 9th St. SW in Canton, Ohio. His daughter Gertrude was the informant for his death certificate.

Theresa Mahler

Records conflict on place of birth: Ohio (1900 census) vs. Virginia (1870 census).

The 1900 census states that seven of Theresa Mahler Blake's ten children were alive in 1900. There were seven children living in the household in 1900. The missing three were Barbara, Elenora, and Beda. This disagrees with the 1910 census, which states that 8 of the couple's 10 children were still living in 1910.

From death certificate:
Name: Theresa Blake
Residence: 2806 9th St. SW, Canton, Stark, Ohio
Age: 71 years 8 months 4 days
Occupation: Housewife At Home
Birth: 19 Jun 1858, Wheeling, W.Va
Marital status: Married
Spouse: Joseph J. Blake
Father: Amandus Mahler, Germany
Mother: Barbara Shaffer, Germany
Informant: Miss Matilda Blake [daughter]

Barbara Gertrude Blake

The 1900 census entry for Barbara Blake's mother, Theresa, states that seven of her ten children were living in 1900. Those seven are accounted for in the census. Barbara is presumed to have died before then.

Barbara Gertrude Blake's (Sister Philomena's) obituary appeared in The Mansfield (OH) News Journal newspaper on May 19, 1963. RITES HELD FOR SISTER OF RESIDENT A Requiem High Mass was offered Friday by the Rev. Thomas A.
Rafferty, chaplain of the sisters of St. Joseph of Wheeling, W. Va.,
for Sister Philomena, sister of Mrs. Emma Finney, 132 West
Second St., who died Wednesday [May 15]. Burial was in Mt. Calvary
Cemetery. Sister Philomena, the oldest member of the religious order, was 84
years old. Formerly Barbara Blake, she was born in Fulda, O. At 20 she
entered the community of the Sisters of St. Joseph, receiving the
religious habit on Jan. 6, 1899. She made her professional vows on
Jan. 9, 1901 and celebrated her golden jubilee in 1951. She performed her religious duties at Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling;
St. Joseph Hospital, Parkersburg, W. Va.; St. Vincents Home, Wheeling;
and Mount St. Joseph, Wheeling. Besides here sister here, Sister Philomena is survived by four sisters,
Matilda and Sophie Blake, of Canton; Gertrude Blake of San Francisco;
and Ida Warner, of Zanesville; and two brothers, Albert and Fred Blake,
both of Louisville, O.

Elenora Blake

Eleanora Blake is not listed as a child of Joseph Blake by Delores Snider, nor is she included with the family in the 1880 census (which includes children born up to 1 Jun 1880).

Maria Mathilda Blake

From the "Fulda" column of The Caldwell Citizens' Press on 29 Mar 1883
Births -- March 21st, to Joseph and ressie Blake, a daughter.

In 1900, 16 year old Matilda Blake lived with her parents and siblings on the family farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. She did not attend school that year.

Matilda Blake never married. She was living in Canton in 1963.

Gertrude Rose Margaret Blake

In 1900, 13 year old Rosa Blake lived with her parents and siblings on the family farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. She attended school for four months in the previous year.

Records conflict: Dolores Snider gives the name as Rose Margaret, and indicates that she entered the convent as Sister M. Philomena. The Louisville Library Obituary Database, the Social Security Death Index, and her sister Emma's obituary refer to this child as Gertrude Rose and Gertrude, respectively. Emma's obituary makes no mention of a nun. Birthdate in obituary database and SSDI matches that given by Dolores Sndier. Social security number was issued in New Jersey prior to 1951.

The 1963 obituary of Barbara Blake (Sister Philomena) states that her sister Gertrude Blake lived in San Francisco.

Sophia Odilia Blake

In 1900, six year old Sophia Blake lived with her parents and younger siblings on the family farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. She did not attend school.

Sophia Blake never married.
