Walter Joseph Tornes

The following note was published in the Zanesville Signal on 27 Jan 1944:
LOWELL - Walter Tornes sustained a broken leg while at
work Tuesday at a sawmill on the Herbert Huck farm about
three miles southwest of Lowell. He is receiving treatment
at Memorial hospital, Marietta.

According to his death certificate, Walter Tornes was married at the time of his death.


Hilda Catherine Schwendeman

The obituary of Hilda Catherine Schwendeman Tornes was published in the Marietta Times, on Sept 22, 2006

CHURCHTOWN — Hilda Catherine Tornes, 86, of Churchtown, died at 6:25 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 20, 2006) at Marietta Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 20, 1920, in Churchtown to William and Marie Meiser Schwendeman. She had worked in packaging at Marietta Truck Growers Association and worked at Ash Hanson Greenhouse. She had attended Christy’s School, a one room school near Churchtown. Hilda was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the Catholic Women’s Club, the Busy Bee Quilting Club, Farm Bureau Council and Churchtown Senior Citizens. She loved quilting, cards, sewing, gardening and reading. She is survived by a son, Howard Tornes (Jayne) of Marietta; two daughters, Edna Arnold (Gary) of Churchtown, and Irene Mulligan (fiance, George Childs) of Williamstown, W.Va.; four grandchildren, John Fleming, Jessica Fleming Ward, Sarah Arnold Grayson and Angie Arnold; six great-grandchildren, Ruby and Reina Fleming, Jacobie and Jaycie Ward, and Molly and Brandon Grayson; two brothers, Paul Schwendeman (Rita), and Harold Schwendeman, and a sister, Leona Arnold (Herman), all of Churchtown; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Walter Joseph Tornes, on Oct. 24, 1981, they had been married on Oct. 23, 1946. Also by two brothers, Ralph and Clarence Schwendeman; and a sister, Leora Huck. Funeral liturgy, with Mass, will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday (Sept. 23, 2006) at St. John the Baptist, with the Rev. Fred Kihm as celebrant. Friends may call at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home <http://www.cawleyandpeoples.com/> from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today. Ralph E. Tornes

Ralph Tornes was a farmer. He was married at the time of his death.


Ida Helen Bauerbach

At this time, it is not known which of Nicholas Bauerbach's daughters married Ralph Tornes.


Albert Joseph Huck

In 1930, Albert J. Huck owned a farm worth $1000 in Adams Twp., Washington Co., Ohio. Living with him were his wife, Helen M., and children Harold A. (6), Hilda E. (4 yrs 5 mos), Dale J. (3), Carol R. (6 mos), and brother Paul (25). Harold attended school. Everyone in the household was a native of Ohio, as were their parents. The family did not own a radio set. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Spencer Kile and Peter Schaad.


Hilda E. Huck

Hilda Huck graduated from Lowell High School in 1943.

LOWELL GIRL FRACTURES SKULL WHEN THROWN FROM BICYCLE
LOWELL - Anna Mae Pottmeyer, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Ralph Pottmeyer, of Lowell, sustained a
fractured skull and other injuries Sunday afternoon
when thrown from the bicycle she and Hilda Huck
were riding. The Huck girl was only slightly injured.
The girls were riding down Lowell hill near the B.
& O. station and apparently lost control of the bike.
It struck the railroad tracks and both girls were hurled
several feet in the air.
They were taken to Memorial hospital, Marietta,
where both girls are reported improving.


William Sylvester Tornes

By 1910, William and Louisa Tornes had purchased a home at 2208 Jacob St. in Wheeling, West Virginia. Living with them were their four surviving children (out of six births): Arthur (12), Helen (10), Calista (8), and Leona (5). The three oldest children attended school. Everyone in the household was born in Ohio except Leona, who was born in West Virginia. William and Louisa's parents were natives of Germany. William worked as a house carpenter.

On 12 Sep 1918, 45 year old William Sylvester Tornes of RFD 4, Youngstown, Ohio filled out a U.S. military draft registration card. He gave his birthdate as 19 Jun 1873, and stated that he was a carpenter working for Wilbur B. Young. William was described as being of medium hieght and slender build, with dark eyes and brown hair, and no obvious physical disabilities.

In 1920, the family was found in a home they owned on South Avenue in Boardman Twp., Mahoning County, Ohio (near Youngstown). The household consisted of William S. Tornes (47), his wife, Louise (50), and daughters Leona (14), Frances (9), and Mary (7). All three daughters were natives of West Virginia. William still worked as a house carpenter.

By the time of the 1930 census, the family appears to have had some problems. At that time, 53 year old William S. Tornes was living as a lodger in a boarding house at 238 W. Boardman St. in Youngstown, Ohio. He was still employed as a house carpenter. Although he was listed as being married (not widowed or divorced), his family was not listed with him.


Louise Mary

In 1930, Louisa (61) was a live-in servant in the home of Italian grocer Carmelo Tornello at 287 Norwood in Youngstown, Ohio. Louisa's marital status in the census is unclear. Several letters, including a "D" were written and crossed out. The census states that she had been married for 27 yeaers.


Francis Tornes

Francis is listed as a girl in the 1920 census. In the 1930 census, 18 year old Francis Tornes, a native of West Virginia, was listed as a penal student in the Ohio State Reformatory in Madison, Richland County, Ohio. Both his parents were born in Ohio.

Dale J. Huck

Dale Huck of Washington County, Ohio enlisted in the US Army on 17 May 1945. His enlistment record states that he had two years of high school education and was employed as a geographer. He was not married.


Theadore Huck

In 1880, Theadore Huck (57) and his wife Banhedena (50) lived in Adams Twp., Washington County, Ohio. Living with them were their children John (24), Philomena (21), Joseph (19), Christina (16), and Andrew (13). The youngest two children attended school. All of the children were born in Ohio. Theadore and his wife were natives of Baden. Adjacent farms in the census were those of Wendel Offenbarger and Anthony Williams.

Her death certificate stated that Mary Huck "had many strokes of paralysis or hemiplagia & the last one caused her death. Helpless for many months." She aslo had arteriosclerosis and had "typhoid fever about a year ago."
