In 1900, widower Martin Paulus (66) owned a farm in Green Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. He lived with his children Josephine R. (22), William H. (20), Albert S. (18) and Mary C. (16). Martin was a native of Germany, as were his parents. The children were all born in Ohio. Their mother was from Pennsylvania. According to the census, Martin had been married only eight years.
