Francis George Hartman

Sources conflict on year of birth:

Francis served in the Army during World War I from 1 Jul 1918 until his honorable discharge 29 Mar 1919. He was a member of Co D 423 Telegraph Battalion Signal Corps. He did not serve overseas.

On 5 Jun 1919, 24 unmarried year old Francis George Hartman of Waterford (Washington Co.) Ohio filled out a US Draft Registration Card. His date and place of birth were given as 1 Aug 1892, Wheeling, WV. He was a farmer who worked on his father's farm. Francis was described as being of medium height and build, with dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. Question number 9 on the card is "Have you a father, mother, wife, child under 12, or sister or brother under 12 solely dependent on you for support? (specify which)" Francis answered "Father and Mother." At the end of the card, was the registrar's signature, preceded by a paragraph stating "I certify that my answers are true, that the person registered has been read his own answers, that I have witnessed his signature, and that all his answers of which I have knowledge are true except as follows:" Following this paragraph, the registrar wrote "we think ans to no 9 untrue."

In 1920, Francis lived with his parents on the family farm in Marietta, Ohio. Francis was employed as an electrician.

Francis and Ethel met during WWI. They lived in North Braddock, PA and later moved to Marietta, OH.

In 1930, Francis G. (37) and Ethel B. (35) rented a home for $35 a month at 211½ Kenwood St., Marietta, Ohio. They had been married for 10 years. There were no children living in the household. Francis was employed as an electrician for an electrical supply company. The couple owned a radio set.

According to the 1930 census, Ethel was from Kansas. Her father and mother were natives of Indiana and Ohio, respectively.


Fred Keller

In 1920, 25 year old Ed Keller and his 32 year old wife Agnes Hartman Keller lived in a rented house at 404 Seddon Ave., North Braddock, with their 2 year old daughter Hilda. Fred worked as an assistant inspector in the steel works. He and his parents were born in Ohio.

At the time of the 1930 census Fred (36) and Agnes (42) Keller owned a home worth $2640 at 629 Ninth St. in Marietta, Washington Co., OH where they lived with their daughter Hilda (13). Hilda attended school. Fred and Hilda were natives of Ohio; Agnes was born in West Virginia. Fred was employed as a salesman of auto accessories. The family did not own a radio set.

According to Edward Schweinberg, Ed Keller married another woman named Agnes after his first wife (Agnes Hartman Keller) died.


Sebastian Huffman

In 1900, 18 year old Sebastian Huffman lived and worked on his parents' farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio.

An extensive search has been made of the 1920 and 1930 Census index for John Sebastian Huffman (and soundex variants). Neither he nor his wife have been found. They are known to have moved to Detroit, Michigan. He was not found in the Social Security Death Index.


Appolonia Dimmerling

According to the obituary of her brother Alex Dimmerling and sister Mary Ann Crum, Appolonia was living in Detroit, Michigan in 1965. She has not been found in Social Security Death Index.


August Dimmerling Jr.

In 1870, 23 year old unmarried shoemaker August Dimmerling lived alone in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. August's real estate was valued at $200, and his personal possessions were worth $150. The households on either side of him were vacant. Next to the vacant households were those of grocer Charles and Philomena (Hohman) Stark, and brewer/cooper Francis Fisher.

At the time of the 1880 census, 33 year old farmer August Dimmerling Jr. lived in Enoch Twp., with his wife Barbara (30) and children William (7), Eva (5), Phrony (3), and Alexander (1). Also living in the household was August's niece Mary (11 mos.), the daughter of Henry Sebastian Dimmerling. Henry and August lived three households apart in the census. William and Eva both attended school. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Barbara's uncle Michael Schott and Anbrose Smith.

This note appeared in the Fulda column of The Caldwell Citizens' Press on 20 Mar 1884:
John U. Brahler, August Dimmerling, and Philip Gerst went to Wheeling
Monday morning.

In 1900, 52 year old August Dimmerling lived on a farm that he owned in Enoch Twp. with his 49 year old wife Barbara and seven of their ten children: Alexander (21), Leo (19), Elizabeth (17), Abby (15), Mary A. (12), Meala (10), and Phelix (7). August and Barbara's oldest son, William, lived in the next household listed in the census. Alexander, Leo, and Elizabeth worked on the farm. (It was not common for a woman to be listed on the census with an occupation of "farm laborer.") Mary and Amelia attended school the previus year, but Abby and Felix did not. Everyone in the household could read and write.

August Dimmerling's obituary appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal on March 29, 1934 AGED MAN DIES August Dimmerling, 88, died at the family home, near Fulda,
Wednesday at 10:30 a. m. following a lingering illness of compli-
cations. He was a life long resident of Noble county and a devoted
member of St. Mary's Catholic church of Fulda. His wife proceeded
him in death March 2, 1934. He is survived by four sons, Phillex Dimmerling, Louisville, O.,
Stark county, Leo and William Dimmerling, Carlisle, and Alex, near
the home, six daughters, Mrs. Joe Michael, Mrs. Andy Hill, Mrs.
Leonard Michael, Mrs. Lawrence Crum, all of near the home; Mrs.
Ed Crum, Athens, and Mrs. Joe Huffman, Pittsburgh, Pa., and 45
grand-children, and 55 great-grandchildren. Funeral services are incomplete.


Barbara Schott

In 1870, 20 year old Barbara Schott lived and worked on her parents farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Her occupation was "helping mother."

In the 1900 census states that all 10 of Barbara Schott Dimmerling's children were still living.

The following note appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on February 20, 1934: SUFFERED STROKE Mrs. August Dimmerling suffered a stroke of paralysis and heart attack
at her home near Fulda Sunday. Dr. Thompson is the attending physician.


The following appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on March 1, 1934: SERIOUSLY ILL Mrs. August Dimmerling, near Fulda, is seriously ill from paralysis.
Her children have been called to her bedside.

Barbara Schott Dimmerling died the following day. Her obituary appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on March 5, 1934 DIMMERLING RITES AT CATHOLIC CHURCH Caldwell, O., March 5 -- Funeral services were held today for
Mrs. Barbara Schott Dimmerling, 88, wife of August Dimmerling,
who died at the family home, near Fulda, Friday afternoon at (?)
o'clock, from a stroke of paralysis she suffered two weeks ago. She was a life long resident of the Fulda community and a
devoted member of the St. Mary's Catholic church. She is survived by her husband, who is seriously ill, and the
following children, four sons, Will and Lee , Carlisle, Felix, Louis-
ville, Stark county and Alex of near the home, and ? daughters,
Mrs. Sebastian Hohman (Huffman), Braddock, Pa., Mrs. Andy
Hill, Mrs. Leonard Michael, Mrs. Joe Michael, Mrs. Lawrence
Crum, near the home and Mrs. Eddie Crum, Athens; (?) grand-
children and 40 great grandchildren also survive and the follow-
ing sisters, Mrs. (?) Miller, Mrs. Louis Schott and Mrs. Rose
Weber. Services were conducted from the St. Mary's Catholic church
at 10 o'clock with the Rev. Father Waites officiating and burial
was made in the church cemetery by William Estadt funeral
director.

Although identified as a sister in the obituary, Mrs. Louis Schott is in all likelihood her brother
Louis Schott who was still alive at the time of Barbara's death.


John Joseph Kaiser

In 1870, 82 year old infirm widower Joseph Kayser lived in the household of his married daughter "Margaret Moot" in Elk Twp., Noble County, Ohio. He was not a U. S. citizen.


John Muth

In 1880, John (26) and Ellen (23) Muth lived in a two-family house at 275 Sawmill Alley in Allegheny Twp., Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Living with them were their children Francis U. (3) and Saraphine (1), and Ellen's brother, John McCormick (38). Both men were employed as laborers. John Muth and his daughter Sara were natives of Pennsylvania, Ellen, her son and her brother were born in Ohio. Ellen's parents were Irish; John Muth's father and mother were from Baden and Hesse Cassel, according to the census. John McCormick, although employed, was categorized as "maimed, crippled, bedridden, or otherwise disabled."

By 1900, John (48) and Ellen (46) Muth had returned to Ohio. They lived in Ludlow Twp., Washington County, Ohio with their nine children Frank (23), Sarah (21), Margaret (19), James (16), John (13), Antony (10), Mary (5), Wildred (2), and Charles (7 months). Only James, John, and Anthony attended school. Everyone in the household was a native of Ohio except John, who was born in Pennsylvania, according to the census. Adjacent farms in the cesnsus belonged to James McCormack (51) and F. T. Miller. The relationship (if any) between Ellen McCormack Muth and neighbor James McCormack is not known at this time.

At the time of the 1910 census, John Muth (58) and his wife Ellen (54) still owned a farm in Ludlow Township. Living with them were their children James (26), Frederick (20), Mary F. (15), Wilfred H. (14), and Charles A. (10). The youngest two boys attended school. According to the census, John was born in Pennsylvania to German-born parents. Ellen was a native of Ohio whose parents were from Ireland. All of the children were born in Ohio. The census states that Ellen had givren birth to 11 children, 9 of whom were still alive in 1910. Neighboring farms in the census were those of James McCormack and John Ruppel.

Ellen Nora McCormack

In 1900, nine of Ellen Muth's ten children were still living.

James Benedict Muth

School teacher and farmer. James retained the old John Muth farm in Ohio. He is buried at Fox Settlement at St. Patrick Cemetery beyond site of church next to his mother and father, John and Ellen Muth.
