MAN BURNED TO DEATH
QUAKER CITY - A Quaker City area man was fatally burned Sunday afternoon in a tractor accident at the Brightman farm about four miles southwest of Quaker City, Noble County Sheriff W. Richard Fogle said.
Melvin Leon Butler, 41, of Quaker City Route 1 was found pinned at the rear of a burning tractor about 5 p.m. by a passing motorist, Paul Mallett of near Salesville.
Fogle said Butler was clearing brush with a tractor and brush hog on the neighboring farm and that the tractor apparently upset as Butler was making a right-hand turn up a steep grade.
The sheriff said he thought the victim might have still been alive when he was pinned under the tractor drawbar and brush hog., but that gasoline from the tractor spilled on him, was sparked by the hot engine and engulfed him in a mass of flame.
The body, he said, was charred beyond description.
Butler was last seen about 2 p.m. Sunday and officials estimated that the body was discovered some three hours after the accident.
He was born in Belmont County, Feb. 23, 1929, a son of Joe and Mary McGee Butler.
