Roy Duncan Croy

Called Richard in the 1900 census, but Roy D. in the 1910 census?

In 1930, Roy D. Croy (29) rented a home for $35 a month at 92 Maple Wood Drive in Athens, Ohio. Other members of the household were his wife, Gertrude S. (30) and their children Dorothy L. (8), Margaret M. (6), Mary F. (5), and Sara L. (3). The two oldest girls attended school. All members of the household were natives of Ohio, as were their parents. Roy was employe as a truck driver for a lumber yard. The family owned a radio set.


Dorothy Louise Croy

On 28 September 1939, the Zanesville Signal reported:
Dorothy Croy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Croy, was admitted
to Mt. Carmel hospital, Columbus Tuesday, where she will undergo
an operation.

This brief mention was published in the Zanesville Signal on 20 Oct 1939:
TO NEW YORK
Dorothy Croy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Croy, who
was admitted to Mt. Carmel hospital, Columbus, for observation
and treatement will be taken to a New York hospital.

The following note appeared in the Zanesville Signal on 31 Jan 1940:
LEAVE FOR NEW YORK
Dorothy Croy and father, R. C. Croy, left Tuesday evening
for New York where the former will enter a hospital for treatment.

A few months later, young Dorothy took a turn for the worse, as reported in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 1 May 1940:
Miss Dorothy Croy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Croy, who has
been ill for several months, is in a serious condition.

Dorothy eventually succumbed to her injury. Her obituary appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 21 May 1940:
DOROTHY CROY, 17, DIES AT HER HOME IN MCCONNELSVILLE
Miss Dorothy Croy, 17, daughter of Roy D. and Gertrude Archer
Croy, died at the home in McConnelsville at 3:30 o’clock, Monday
afternoon after an illness last September from the effects of an
injury to her knee.
She was a member of the class of M & M high school.
Surviving besides the parents are three sisters, Margaret, Mary
and Sarah Croy, and a brother, Roy D. Jr., all of the home.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Nathan Croy was a widower at the time of his death.
