John Henry Lori

From the 1900 census: 34 year old farmer John Lorey lived on his mortgaged farm in Jefferson Twp., Noble County Ohio with his 30 year old wife, Barbara. With them lived their three sons Joseph F. (Oliver?) (4), Edward (3), and Beda (1); as well as Barbara's two sons from her first marriage: Felix Saling (9) and John Saling (7). Also living in the household was John's younger sister Barbara (20). All of the older members of the household could read and write English.

Matilda Barbara Estadt

Barbara Estadt and her future husband John Saling grew up on adjacent farms in Enoch Twp. They were married only two and a half years when John died of typhoid fever. After his death, Barbara and her sons moved in with her widowed father until her remarriage in 1894.

From the 1900 census: 30 year old Barbara Lorey gave birth to five children., all of whom were still living in 1900. The census states that Barbara and her parents were born in Ohio.

Peter died within three months of his marriage to Rosan Crum, before the birth of their only child.


Rosan E. Crum

Rosan Crum Hill, a widow, lived in the household of her father Michael Crum in the 1910 census.

In 1920, Rose Shell lived with her second husband, Charles Shell, in Canton, Stark Co., Ohio. Her son from her first marriage, Otto John Hill did not live with her; he was living with Rose's parents in Noble County.


Frank Saling

In 1900, 32 year old farmer Frank Salling lived on a farm that he owned in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 30 year old wife Minnie and their three children: Emilia (8). Nora (6), and Joseph (4). Also living in the house was Frank's 72 year old widowed mother.

In 1910, 41 year old Frank Saling lived with his 40 year old wife Minnie, their four children, and his mother.

Frank's obituary appeared in the Zanesville Signal (page 5) on 19 Mar 1940:
Frank Sailing, 72, well known farmer of the Middleburg
community, died at his home Sunday following a lingering illness of
complications and heart disease. He spent his entire life in the Middle-
burg community. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic church,
Fulda.
Surviving are his widow, Minnie Noll Sailing; four children,
Joseph and Edgar Sailing of the Sailing Brothers Mill; Mrs. E. J. Snyder,
of Cleveland, and Mrs. William J. Hill, Fulda; Mrs. John Bosold, of Cald-
well, is a sister; Mrs. Clarence Schel, Caldwell, is a granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at St. Mary's
Catholic church with Rev. Fr. B. J. Mattes officiating. Burial will be in St.
Mary’s cemetery.


Philomena Noll

Philomena Noll Sailing's obituary appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on April 6, 1942.
SAILING RITES THIS MORNING
CALDWELL, O. -- Rev. Father Louis B. Preston will conduct requiem High Mass at St. Philomena's Catholic church Monday at 9 a. m. for Mrs. Minnie Noll Sailing, 72, who died in good Samaritan hospital, Zanesville, Friday afternoon. Death was due to cerebral hemorrhage (sic) which she suffered two weeks ago. Burial will be made in St. Mary's cemetery at Fulda.
Mrs. Sailing was the widow of Francis Sailing, who died several years ago. For several years she has resided in Caldwell.
Surviving children are Mrs. Amelia Hill, of Caldwell; Mrs. Eleanore Snider, of Cleveland and Joseph and Edgar Sailing of Olive; the sisters and brothers are Mrs. Mary Craft and Mrs. Matilda Crum of near Carlisle; Ambrose Noll, of Fulda, and Joseph Noll, of Canton.
Friends are asked to call at the home as the casket will not be opened at the church. The Brubach funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Philip Charles Shell

In 1920, 34 year old Charles Shell lived with his wife Rosa (36) in a mortgaged home they owned at 634 Prospect Ave. SW in Canton, Stark Co., Ohio. Charles worked as a grinder (The type of company is illegible -- Gellen?). Charles and Rose were born in Ohio as was Charles' mother and Rose's parents. According to the census, Charles' father was born in Alcase (?) and his native tongue was German. Rose's son Otto is not in the household.

Living in Canton in 1927.

According to the 1930 census, 45 year old Charles Shell lived with his wife Rosa H. (43) in a home they owned (valued at $10,000) at 1215 Ridge Road, Canton, Stark Co. OH. Living with them was Rosa's son from her first marriage, Otto John Hill (22) and Otto's wife Norma (21). Charles was 33 at the time of his first marriage and Rosa was 22. All indications are that this was Charles first marriage and Rosa's second. Otto was 21 and Norma 19 when they married.

The 1930 census states that Charles, Rosa and Otto were born in Ohio, as were Rosa's parents. Charles' parents were born in Germany according to the census. Norma and her parents were born in Missouri. Charles worked as a clerk in a restaurant; Otto as a carpenter doing work for a weather stripping company; and Norma as a clerk in a dry goods store. The family owned a radio.

Charles Schell’s obituary was published in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 11 Apr 1931:
DIED FROM INJURIES
Word was received here by relatives Thursday night of the
death of Charles Schell, which occurred at Canton, Thursday
night at 11:30 o’clock from injuries received in an automobile
accident, which happened in that city on Wednesday.
The deceased is a former resident of Noble county, the son
of the late Phillip Schell and wife, and was born and reared
near Carlisle.
Surviving are his wife who was Miss Rosa Crim (sic) of East
Union before her marriage, one step-son, Otto Hill of the home,
and the following brothers and sisters: John, Leo, Chris, Nick
and Alex Schell of near Carlisle, Mrs. Alex Singer of near Middle-
burg, and Mrs. Dora Warner of near Carlisle. Funeral services
will be held at Canton Sunday and burial will be made there. A
number of Noble county relatives left immediately for Canton.


The following funeral notice for Charles Schehl appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on April 14, 1931. FUNERAL AT CANTON Funeral services for Charles Schehl, former resident of Berne, who
was killed in an automobile accident at Canton, were held Monday
morning at that city. He leaves three brothers, Leo and John Schehl of
Berne, and Chris Schehl of Summerfield; two sisters, Mrs. Rosa
Warner of Berne, and Mrs. Minnie Singer, near Fulda.


Rosan E. Crum

Rosan Crum Hill, a widow, lived in the household of her father Michael Crum in the 1910 census.

In 1920, Rose Shell lived with her second husband, Charles Shell, in Canton, Stark Co., Ohio. Her son from her first marriage, Otto John Hill did not live with her; he was living with Rose's parents in Noble County.


Michael Crum

In 1880, 27 year old Michael Crum lived with his wife Mary O. (23) and son Francis (1 mo) on a farm in Stock Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. All members of the household were born in Ohio as were Mary's parents. Michael's father were born in Saxe Weimer and his mother in Hesse. Living on the adacent farm were Mary's parents Elijah and Margaret J. Archer.

In 1900, 47 year old farmer Michael Crum lived on a farm that he owned in Stock Twp., Noble Couty, Ohio with his 44 year old wife Mary and nine children: Francis (20), Charles (18), Rosa (17), Lawrence (14), Edward (12), Elijah (10), Lucy (8), Nora (5), and Nela (3). The two oldest boys worked the farm with their father. Everyone except the youngest three could read and write English. Adjacent farms in the census belong to Martha's parents, and to Michael's younger brother, George Crum.

When the 1910 census was taken, Michael Crum lived with his wife Mary O. (53) on a farm they owned in Stock Twp., Noble co., Ohio. Living with them were their children Edward P. (22), Elijah F. (20), Lucy M. (18), Ellanora (15), and Nellie E. (13). Also living with them was their widowed daughted Rose E. Hill (27) and her son Otto J. (2). Ellanora and Nellie attended school. The occupation for Edward and Elijah is given on the census as farmer. All members of the household were born in Ohio as were Mary's parents. Michael's parents were born in Germany. Living on the adjacent farm was Michael's brother George and his family.

In 1920, Michel (670 and Ollie Crum (63) still owned a farm in Stock Twp. Living with them were their daughter Nellie (23) and grandson Otto Hill (12). Otto attended school. Otto's mother, who had recently remarried following the death of Otto's father, lived in Canton with her husband. The neighboring families in the census were those of William Sorg and Andrew Archer. The relationship (if any) between Andrew Archer and Michael's wife, Ollie Archer Crum, is not known at this time.

At the time of the 1930 census, widower Michael Crum (76) lived alone on his farm in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio. His younger brother George lived next door. The other adjacent farm belonged to Edward J. Sorg.

According to his death certificate, Mickel Crum was born in Noble Co., Ohio on January 3, 1853 to German born Frank Crum. At the time of his death on April 7, 1934 in Stock Twp., Noble Co., Ohio he was widowed [ wife: Mary O. Crum]. The cause of his death is given as acute cardiac failure and he also had a malignancy of the stomach. He was buried in Fulda, Ohio on April 8, 1934.

Michael Crum's obituary appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on April 9, 1934 CRUM FUNERAL Funeral services were held today for Michael Crum, 83,
retired farmer, who died at the family home near East Union
at 8 o'clock Saturday morning, death being due to compli-
cations. He was a devoted member of St. Mary Catholic church at
Fulda. His wife proceeded him in death a number of years
ago. He is survived by the following children, two sons, Eddie
Crum, near Caldwell; Frank Crum, Zanesville and four
daughters, Mrs. Roe Schell and Mrs. Lucy Weisland, Canton;
Mrs Nellie Herron, Akron; and Mrs. Cora Khune, Lewisville;
and thirty-five grandchildren and four brothers, Lawrence,
Caldwell; John and George of near East Union and Leo,
Middleburgh. Services were conducted from St. Mary's church at 10
o'clock by Rev. Father Mattes and burial was made in the
church cemetery.


Mary Olivia Archer

Mary's baptismal sponsors were Ambrose and Maria Archer.

According to the 1900 census and the 1910 census, all nine of Mary Archer Crum's children were still living. The 1910 census data conflicts with information that Mary had a child who was born abt 1901 and died the same year (Snider).

Obituary (Zanesville Times Recorder, early edition) 2 Aug 1927:
Summerfield, O., Aug. 1 - Mrs. Michael Crum, aged 70, a well known and very
highly respected citizen of this community died early Saturday at her home on
Summerfield Route 2 following several weeks’ illness from cancer of the stomach.
The deceased is survived by her husband and the following children: Mrs. John
Nauer of Akron; Mrs. Rose Schehl and Mrs. Lucy Weisend of Canton; Mr. Leo
Kuhn of Zanesville; Lawrence Crum of Fulda; Edward Crum of Caldwell Route 4;
Charles and Elijah Crum of Sarahsville Route 1. She is also survived by several
grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends.
Funeral services have not been fully arranged at this time, but services will be
conducted in the Fulda Catholic church of which the deceased was a devoted member,
by her pastor, Rev. Fr. R.J.B. Oeink. Interment will be made in the Fulda cemetery.

Another obituary was published in a later edition of the same paper that day:
MRS. OLLIE CRUM, OF EAST UNION TAKEN BY DEATH
CALDWELL, O., Aug 1. - Mrs. Ollie Archer Crum, 70, well known and highly
respected, passed away at the family home near East Union, Saturday morning near
8 o’clock. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elizah Archer, and was born near
East Union. She lived her entire life in that community. She was a devoted member
of the Fulda Catholic church.
The deceased is suvived by her husband Michael Crum, five sons, and four daugh-
ters as follows: Frank Crum of Zanesville; L. C. Crum, Fulda; Edward Crum of
Caldwell; Elizah and Charles of East Union, Mrs. Rosie Schell and Mrs. Lucy
Weisent of Canton; Mrs. Dora Kuhn, Zanesville, and Mrs. John Nauer of Akron.
A brother, William Archer, near East Union, and a number of grandchildren also
survive.
Funeral services were held from the Catholic church at Fulda Monday morning
at 9 o’clock conducted by the pastor Rev. Oeink. Undertaker Brubach of Summerfield
had charge of the funeral. Burial was in the church cemetery.

In 1880, 72 year old widow "Catherine Ebbert" lived with her widowed daughter Eva Kluber in the Village of Fulda, Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. No occupation or place of birth is listed for Catherine.

Twenty-two year old John Arnold did not live with his parents and younger siblings at the time of the 1880 census. John Arnold and Marian Sternagel and family moved to Wheeling, WV.


Marian Sterangel

In 1870, 16 year old Mary A. Sternagle lived and worked on her parents farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with her four older siblings. Mary did not attend school that year, although the census indicates that she could read and write.

In 1900, 45 year old widowed Mary Arnold lived in Enoch Twp, Noble County, Ohio with all three of her children: Anna (15), Edmund (12), and John (5). Mary was born in Ohio to German-born parents.

At the time of the 1910 census, 56 year old Mary A. Arnold lived in Noble County Ohio with her two sons, Edmund (22) and John (15).

Sebastian Arnold

Sebastian and Mary Ann Arnold moved to Allegheny County, PA, but returned to Fulda. On 7 Jan 1897, the Caldwell Ohio newspaper reported:
Ferd Fox of Wheeling and S. Arnold of Pittsburg have moved their families to this place.

In 1900, 39 year old farmer Sebastian Archer lived on a rented farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 35 year okd wife, Mary, and their five children: Aloysius (13), Otto (11), Anna (9), Joseph (6), and Mary (2). Aloysius and Mary were born in Ohio. Otto, Anna, and Joseph were born in Pennsylvania. The family enumerated next in the census was that of Sebastian's brother-in-law, Lawrence Schafer.

At the time of the 1910 census, 49 year old Sebastian Arnold and his 44 year old wife Mary owned a farm in Enoch Twp. Noble County, Ohio where they lived with their nine children: Aloysius H. (23), Otto J. (21), Emma E. (19), Joseph S. (16), Mary H. (12), Ida C. (9), Rosella C. (8), Ramond W. (5), and Amelia H. (3). Only Mary, Ida, and Rosella attended school. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Henry L. Hupp and James Clark.


Mary Ann Schafer

According to the census, all nine of Mary Schafer Arnold's children were still living in 1910. Mary was born in Ohio to German-born parents.

Mrs. Sebastian Arnold Dies Of Heart Attack - - Funeral Sunday
Mrs. Sebastian Arnold, aged 61, a life long resident
of the Fulda vicinity, died suddenly at her home there Thursday
morning from a heart attack. She had been in failing health
since the death of her husband 11 months ago, but her death
was entirely unexpected and was a shock to her children and
friends.
Mrs. Adam Miller of Fulda, a daughter of the deceased,
and her husband were on their way to Caldwell to attend the fair
when they were stopped en route and informed of the death.
Mrs. Arnold is survived by Albert H. Arnold and Joseph
Arnold, Mrs. J. W. Davis and Mrs. Edward Ritterbeck, all of Akron,
Mrs. Albert Crock of Harriettsville, Mrs. Adam Miller of Fulda and
Raymond and Matilda Arnold of the home.
The deceased was a life-long member of St. Mary’s Cath-
olic church at Fulda and the funeral services will be conducted from
that church following a requiem high mass at 9 o’clock Saturday
morning with the Rev. J. B. Oeink officiating. Burial will be in the
church cemetery at Fulda.


Aloysious Henry Arnold

In 1910, Aloysius H. Arnold (23) lived with his parents and eight younger siblings on the family farm in Enoch Twp., Noble county, Ohio. Aloysius was employed as a blacksmith.

The baby died before being baptized, and so could not be buried in consecrated ground. The infant was buried in Potter's field adjoining the cemetery of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception.


William A. Arnold

At the time of the 1910 census, 36 year old William Arnold lived in Caldwell, Noble County Ohio with his 35 year old wife Mary, his 73 year old mother, Regina, and five children: Hubert E (12), Agnes M (10), Bernard F (7), Paul G (5), and William Jr (3).

In 1920, William Arnold (43) and his wife Mary (44) lived in Caldwell with their children Agnes (21), Hubert (20), Bernard (17), Paul (15), William (13), and Frederick (5). Bernard, Paul, and William attended school. William was a self-employed merchant.

On Jul 12, 1925, William Arnold of Caldwell attended a triple birthday party at the home of Frank Smoth to honor Mrs. Alex (Tillie) Gerst, Frank Smith, and Fred Fox. See notes of Fred Fuchs (Fox) for text of the article from the Zanesville Times Recorder.

In 1930, the Arnolds owned a home worth $6000 at 806 North St. in Caldwell. Living there were William (54), his wife Mary R. (55), and their sons William Jr. (23) and Frederick (15). Frederick attended school. William Sr. was a retail merchant in a hardware store. His son, William, was a salesman in the store. Like most of their neighbors, the Arnold family owned a radio set.

Obituary:
VETERAN BUSINESS MAN IS DEAD
CALDWELL - William Arnold Sr., oldest active business man here,
died at 10 o’clock Tuesday morning at his home on North street, following
three months illness. A native of the Fulda community, he was the son of
John and Regina Arnold. He had operated a hardware store here for the past
46 years. In 1919, he formed a partnership with O.J. Lorenz, which continued
until his health failed about three months ago.
He was a member of St. Philomena Catholic church here. Surviving
are his widow, Mary Smith Arnold; one daughter, Mrs. Agnes Lyons, Chicago;
five sons, Paul and Fred Arnold, Canton; B. F. of Huntington, Calif.; H.E. of
Evansville, Ind., and William Arnold Jr. of this place; one brother, Henry Arnold,
of Noble county.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed.


Mary Regina Ehlerman

ALL DAY QUILTING
Caldwell, O., March 24 - Mrs. Willima (sic) Arnold entertained a
number of ladies with an all-day quilting at her home on North street
Thursday. The quilt was for the benefit of the St. Philomena church
and at the noon hour a two course dinner was served to Mesdames
Helen Ehlerman, John Hupp, Frank Nau, Urban Nau, Edward Fogle,
Fred Young, Frank Smith, Ben Noll, Clem Estadt, Joe Hill and the
hostess.

MRS. W. A. ARNOLD DIES AT CALDWELL
CALDWELL - Mrs. Mary Ehlerman Arnold, 73, widow
of William A. Arnold, died Monday morning [24 May 1948] at 6:30
in her home on North street, Caldwell, following a heart attack.
Mrs. Arnold, who lived alone, called a neighbor after she was
stricken and asked her to summon Dr. N. S. Reed. Mrs. Arnold died
shortly after the physician’s arrival.
She was born at Fulda, near Caldwell, the daughter of G. S.
and Eva Hohman Ehlerman. She was an active life-long member of St.
Philomena Catholic church in Caldwell. Her husband, a Caldwell
business man, died several years ago.
Mrs. Arnold is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Agnes Lyons
of Chicago, Ill.; five sons, William of Akron; Frederick of Tucson, Ariz.;
Paul of Cleveland; Hubert of Evansville, Ind.; Bernard of Los Angeles; a
sister, Miss Cecelia Ehlerman of Caldwell; four brothers, Terrence M.
Ehlerman of Caldwell, Julius Ehlerman of Dayton, William Ehlerman of
Sioux City, Iowa and Adolph Ehlerman of Newark. One son preceded
her in death.
The body will be removed to the residence today from the
Estadt funeral home in Caldwell. Funeral arrangements are incomplete,
pending the arrival of the children.


Bernard Frederick Arnold

In 1930, Bernard Arnold was a roomer in the home of Kansas native Howard Taylor in a rented home on East Broadway in Long Branch, Los Angeles County, California. Bernard, who was not married, worked as a chef in a cafe.

Bernard was still living in the Los Angeles area at the time of his mother's death in 1948.


Frederick Arnold

No child named Fredrick lived with the family at the time of the 1910 census. Frederick was living in Canton when his father died in 1938, and in Tucson Arizona at the time of his mother's death in 1948.
