Notes

John Richman Merry

In 1900, 38 year old farmer John R. Merry, his wife Cynthia (27) and their family lived on John's parents' farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. John's father, Ambrose Merry, is listed as the head of household. Although there are four grandchildren in the house -- Clide (?) (15), Zelda (14), Ambrose (5) and Jessie (1) -- the census states that Cynthia has had only two children. Perhaps Cynthia is John's second wife. (This supposition is supported by the disparity in age between Johna nd Cynthia, as well as the gap in the children's ages.)

Ambrose Merry

Sources conflict on date of birth:
Jul 1840 -- 1900 census
3 Jun 1840 -- death certificate

Ambrose Merry's death certificate states that he was born in Noble County, however Noble County did not exist in 1840. Enoch Twp., where the Merry family lived, was a part of Monroe County at that time.

In 1850, Ambrose Merry (20) and his wife Harriett (19) lived in Enoch Twp., Noble County Ohio. Their farm was adjacent to that of his parents, Rufus (60) and Sarah (55) Merry and their teenage children Elizabeth and Cawlin.

In 1870, 30 year old Ambrose Merry still lived in Enoch Twp. with his wife Harriet (35) and children John (7), Marshall (5) and Ella (1). His farm was adjacent to that of his parents.

At the time of the 1880 census, Ambrose Merry (40) lived in Enoch Twp. with his wife Harriet (42) and children John R. (18), Marshall (14), Alta May (11), Rufus (8), Sally (6), and Lydia Ann (3). Only Alta May and Rufus attended school. Everyone in the household was a native of Ohio. The 1880 census is the first census that asked where a person's parents were born. According to the census, Ambrose's father was born in New York, and his mother was from Ohio. Harriet's father and mother were born in Maryland and Virginia, respectively.

On 28 Jun 1883, the Fulda column of the Caldwell Citizens' Press reported:
The two new School houses that are to be build in Enoch
Township were contracted to R. M. Wells and Ambros
Merry last Saturday for $870,00

In 1900, 59 year old farmer Ambrose Merry lived on a farm that he owned in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Living with him were his wife Harriet (62), his sons Rufus 28 and John (38), John's wife Cynthia (27), and four grandchildren: Clide (15), Zelda (14), Ambrose (5), and Jessie (1). Ambrose Merry was born in Ohio. His father was born in New York, and his mother was from Pennsylvania.

Ambrose Merry lived in the household of his son, John R. Merry at the time of the 1910 census.

From death certificate:
Name: Ambrose Merry
Age: 74 years 9 months 14 days
Occupation: Farmer, Stock Dealer
Birth: 03 Jun 1840, Noble Co, Ohio
Marital status: Widowed
Father: Rufus Merry, New York
Mother: Sallie Fogle, Penn
Informant: J. R. Merry, Caldwell, O [son]

It is not known if Sallie Fogle Merry, native of Pennsylvania, is the same person as Sarah Merry, native of Ohio or if Ambrose's father Rufus Merry had two wives.

Harriet A. Hall

Harriet was born in Ohio; both her parents were born in Virginia. According to the census, Harriet Merry gave birth to nine children, six of whom were still living in 1900. Harriet does not appear in the 1900 census.

Rufus H. Merry

In 1900, 28 year old unmarried Rufus Merry lived with his parents and his older brother's family on a farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Another Rufus Merry (born in 1865) lived with his wife Ella in Stock Twp. (perhaps a cousin?).
