Lawrence Crum

Lawrence's parents were both deceased by the time he was six years old. He was raised by his widowed mother, Mary Anna Sealfert Weber Crum.

From the 1900 census: 39 year old farmer Lawrence Crum lived on a farm that he owned in Jefferson Twp., Noble County Ohio with his 40 year old wife Margaret and their seven children: Katie (13), Rosa (11), Mike (9), Lena (7), Bedy (6), Clara (3), and Lizzie (1). All of the older children attended school. Lawrence was born in Ohio to German born parents. He could read and write English.

In 1910, 49 year old farmer Lawrence Crum lived with his wife of 27 years Margaret (50) on a farm they owned in Jefferson Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. Living with them were their children Michael (19), Lena (17), Bede (15), Clara (13), Lizzie (11), and Marie (9). All members of the household were born in Ohio as were Lawrences's and Margaret's parents. Neither Lawrence nor Margaret could read or write. The four younger children attended school. According to the census, Margaret had given birth to 8 children all of whom were still living.

In 1920, 60 year old farmer Lawrence Crum lived with his wife Margaret (60) on a farm they owned in Jefferson Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. Living with them were their children Bede (26), Elizabeth (21), Marie (18) and Catherine (32). All members of the household were born in Ohio as was Margaret's mother. Lawrence's parents were born in Germany and Margaret's father in France.

A note in The Zanesville Signal (newspaper) published on 24 Dec 1926 stated:
An oil well drilled on the Lawrence Crumb property near Fulda,
recently, is making five barrels daily.

In 1930, 69 year old Lawrence Crum lived with his wife Margaret (70) and daughter Marie (29) in a home he owned (value $1200) at 832 Railroad Street, Olive Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. According to census data, Lawrence and Margaret had been married for 57 years. Neither of them could read or write. All members of the household were born in Ohio. According to the census, Lawrence's father was born in Holland and his mother's birth place is given only as "U.S." Margaret's father was a native of France and her mother was from Pennsylvania. The famiy did not own a radio.

The following notice appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on March 19, 1942: CRUM FUNERAL Funeral services for Lawrence Crum will be held Friday morning
at 9:30 o'clock at the St. Philomena Catholic church in Caldwell, Rev.
Fr. Preston will officiate. Burial will be in the Fulda cemetery. Estadt
funeral home is in charge of arrangements.


Margaret Kathryn Ritterbeck

By 1900, Margaret Ritterbeck Crum had given birth to seven children, all of whom survived. She could speak English, but she could not read or write. Margaret and her mother were born in Ohio to a German-born father. (Other sources state that her mother was born in Pennsylvania.)

Margaret Ritterbeck Crum's obituary appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on July 4, 1943. Mrs. Margaret A. Crum Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret A. Crum, 84, native of Noble
county, who died Wednesday afternoon at the home of her daughter,
Marie Noll, 824 Prospect avenue were held Saturday morning at the
St. Philomena Catholic church in Caldwell. Burial was in Fulda in
Noble county. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Katherine Schwallie of Canton;
Mrs. Rose Lori of Johnsonville, Ill.; Mrs. Lena Kinnen of Berne; Mrs.
Clara Smithberger of Lower Salem and the daughter in this city; 17
grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Weiha-
gen of Braddock, Pa., and Mrs. Theresa Thompson of Middleburg,
O., and one brother, Henry Ritterbeck of Berne. One son, Michael
Crum; was killed in action during World War I and another son, Beda
Crum, died two years ago.


Michael Aloysius Crum

On June 5, 1917 unmarried farmer Michael Allos Crum (26, dob: August 4, 1890, pob: Middleburg, Ohio) of RFD#2, Summerfield, Ohio registered for the military draft. His physical descriptin is given as tall, medium build, with brown eyes and black hair.

Of the 35 Fulda natives who served in World War I, Michael Crum was one of four who did not come home. (The other three were Peter Kraft, Clement Schwallie and Henry Rupple.)

Snider states that Michael Crum is buried in St. Mary's. According to Schockling, his body was not returned to Fulda, but a Rite of Christian Burial was held and the names of the fallen soldiers were placed on one large tombstone in the cemetery, along with photos of the men.

A note from the 15 Jan 1919 issue of the Republican Journal:
The following persons spent Sunday at Dora Warner's: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kinnen, Catherine Sorg, Bernetta and Beulah Kinnen, Clement Smith, Clyde and Edward Schehl, Nicholas Sorg, Clarence Schwallie, George Kinnen, Clarence Thompson and Bede Crum.

Beda Crum's obituary appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 21 Apr 1941.
BEDA CRUM DIES AT CALDWELL
CALDWELL, O., Apr 20 - Beda Crum, 47, died today at the home of his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Crum, following an illness of one year.
He was a member of the Catholic church at Caldwell.
Survivors include his parents and five sisters, Mrs. John Schwallie, North Canton;
Mrs. Henry Kinnen, of near Bern, Noble county; Mrs. Alex Lori, Johnsonville, Ill.; Mrs.
Leander Smithberger, Lower Salem; and Mrs. Alphonsus Noll, Zanesville.
The body will be removed to the late residence Monday. Funeral arrangements,
directed by the Estadt Funeral Home, have not been completed.

Another obituary for Beda Crum appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on April 21, 1941. This obituary incorrectly identifies him as a woman and the daughter of Lawrence Crum instead of his son. MISS BEDA CRUM DIES AT CALDWELL Miss Beda Crum, 47, sister of Mrs. Alphonsus Noll, of Zanesville, died Sunday at
the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Crum, of Caldwell, following an
illness of complications. She was well known in the Caldwell vicinity and was a member of the Catholic
church in that town. Surviving in addition to her parents are five sisters, Mrs. Noll, of this city; Mrs.
John Schwallie, of North Canton; Mrs. Henry Kinnen, of near Berne; Mrs. Alex
Lori, of Johnsonville, Ill., and Mrs. Leander Smithberger, of Lower Salem. The body was removed to the Estadt funeral home at Caldwell and was taken
to the residence today.


Albert Arnold

In 1920, Albert Arnold (22) and his wife Emma (28) owned a home on Cumberland St. in the village of Caldwell, Noble County, Ohio. Living with them were their sons, Donald (5), Delbert (3) and Ralph (1), and Emma's unmarried sister Ida Noll (15). Ida attended school. Albert was a self-employed blacksmith. Everyone in the household was born in Ohio.

By the time of the 1930 census, Aloysius Arnold (43) had moved to Wayne Twp. in Muskingum County, Ohio. The other members of the household were his wife, Emma (39), and children Donald (15), Delbert (13), Ralph (11), Mary Rose (5), and Lucille (3 yrs 6 mos). The boys all attended school, but the girls did not. Aloysius worked as a tool dresser in a radiator plant. According to the census, everyone in the home was a native of Ohio except Donald, who was born in Minnesota. The census also stated that Aloysius and Emma were 26 and 22 when they were first married.

There are several discrepancies between the 1920 and 1930 census: Al Arnold's name and age are significantly different, as is Donald's birth place.

service, and two daughters, Alma and Donna May of the home, and several
brothers and sisters, including Herbert Noll of Seborn avenue and Mrs.
Cash Landenker of Green street.

the funeral services for Francis Noll to be held at St. Mary's church at Fulda at
9:30 o'clock. full military rites will be held at the grave in St. Mary's cemetery.

George Schoeppner

In 1900, 34 year old farmer George Schoeppner lived on a farm that he owned in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his second wife Kate (30), and children Martha (9) -- from George's first marriage,George (4), Milda (2), and John (1). Also living with them was 56 year old farm laborer (Ferdi?) Hupp.

Living in the household at the time of the 1910 census (surname spelled Schoeppun): George (44), his wife Katie (40), and their children: Bida (14), Milda M (12), John P (11), Silvina P (9), Ramon J (6), Mera B (4), Willie S (3) and Carl E (> 1). George's two daughters from his frist marriage to Anna Burkhart -- Martha (19) and Ottilia (17) -- did not live with him.
