Henry H. Huffman

Henry Huffman moved his family from the Fulda (Noble Co., OH) area to Harriettsville in Elk Twp., Noble Co., OH in 1869.

In 1880, farmer Henry Hoffman (39) and his wife Frances (38) lived in Elk Twp., Noble County, Ohio with their children John (13), Katherine (10), Barbara (6), Matilda (4), and Joseph H. (10 mos.). The two oldest children attended school.

In 1900, Henry (58 - Jan 1852) lived in Elk Twp. with his wife Frances (58 - Aug 1851) and five of their children: John (33 - Aug 1866), Matilda (24 - Mar 1876), Joseph H. (20 - Jul 1879), Leo (18 - Aug 1881), and Edward (15 - Aug 1884). Henry could not read or write, but he spoke English. He owned his own farm.

At the time of the 1910 cenus, Henry Huffman (68) owned a farm in Elk Twp. Living in the houshold with him were his wife Frances (69) and children Matilda M. (35) and George E. (25). Adjacent farms in the census belonged to John Bosold and Henry's son, Leo.

In 1920, widower Henry Huffman (78) still owned a farm in Elk Twp, wher he lived with his unmarried adult children Mary Matilda (44) and Edward John (35). Henry's son Leo lived on the adjacent farm in the census.

Francesca Hohman

In 1860, 17 year old farmer Francesca Hohman lived with her parents and siblings on the family farm in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. She attended school that year.

From the 1900 census: Frances Hohman had given birth to nine children, six of who still survived. Although the census states that she was born in Germany, it does not indicate when she arrived in America. Frances could not read or write, but she could speak English.

The 1910 census states that Frances only gave birth to seven children, six of whom were still living in 1910. This census shows that she arrived in America in 1840.

Matilda Marian Huffman

Called Marian Huffman by researcher Dolores Snider. Tillie was listed as the person who would also know the address of her brother, Edward, when he registered for the draft in 1942. Tillie Huffman never married.

Edward John Huffman

On 12 Sep 1918, Edward John Huffman of Dexter City, Noble County, Ohio registered for the US military draft. His date of birth was July 15, 1884. Edward's next of kin was Henry Hoffman, also of Dexter City. Edward was described as being of medium height and build with grey eyes and black hair.

In 1930, Edward J. Huffman (45) and his sister Tillie (53) owned a farm worth $800 in Elk Twp., Noble County, Ohio. No children lived in the household. Adjoining farms were those of Charley Schott and Edward's brother, Leo Huffman.

Edward JohnHuffman registered for the draft a second time in 1942, when he lived in Harrietsville (mailing address Dexter City) Elk Twp., Noble County, Ohio. He was 5'7", 135 lbs., with gray hair, gray eyes, and a light brown complexion.

Edward Huffman never married.


Valentine Saling

Known as Felty.

Valentine Saling is not listed with the family in the 1860 census. He would have been about 10 years old at the time.

At the time of the 1910 census, 49 year old Valentine Sailing lived with his 54 year old wife, Elizabeth, and their six children.


Elizabeth Blake

In 1930, 74 year old widow Elizabeth Blake Saling lived in the household of her son, George, and his wife and daughter. Also living in the home were Elizabeth's son, Fred (40) and daughter Margaret (42). Elizabeth died just two weeks after the census taker visited the George Saling home.

Death certificate informant was her son Fred Saling.


Margaret Saling

At the time of the 1930 census, 42 year old unmarried Margaret Saling lived in the home of her brother, George, with his wife and daughter. Also living in the household was Margaret's brother Fred (40) and their widowed mother, Elizabeth Blake Saling (74).


Fred Saling

The following report appeared in The Caldwell Citizens Press 17 Nov 1915:
Fred Sehling. a young man about 25 years of age, while pulling rods on a well
on the Sebast Dimmerling farm near Fulda, got both his hands caught in the pulleys
making necessary the amputation of six fingers and one thumb.

In 1930, Fred Saling (40) lived with the family of his younger brother George, along with their sister Margaret (42) and widowed mother Elizabeth Blake Saling (74).


Alexander Joseph Smithberger

On 12 Sep 1918, 20 year old Alexander Joseph Smithberger of R.F.D. 2 of Lower Salem in Washington County filled out a U.S. military draft registration card. He gave his birthdate as Dec. 16th 1897. He indicated that he was a farmer working for Catherine Smithberger. Alexander was described as being tall and of medium build with gray eyes and black hair, with no obvious physical disabilities.
