Paul P. Burkhart

Obituary:
Paul P. Burkhart, 71, of Barnesville died suddenly
Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at his farm near Barnesville.
He was born June 22, 1932, in Barnesville, a son of
Marie Ryan Burkhart and the late Lawrence Burkhart. Paul graduated from Barnesville High School, College
of Steubenville and received his Masters Degree from
West Virginia University. He taught 4th grade in the
Barnesville School System for 39 years. He coached
Junior High basketball, varsity girls basketball, and was
a head girls softball coach at Barnesville for 20 years.
He was a member of the Assumption Catholic Church,
a veteran of the Korean War serving in the Air Force. A
member of the OVAC girls softball committee, Farm
Bureau, Knights of Columbus, Barnesville American
Legion and a 20 year member of the Barnesville E-
Squad. Paul was voted Barnesville's Citizen of the Year
in 1997.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by
a brother, Jerry Burkhart. Surviving in addition to his mother of Barnesville, are
his wife of 40 years, Frances Sulek Burkhart; one son,
Paul (Martina) Burkhart; four daughters, Teresa Harsh-
barger (Eric), Mary Anne (Daniel) Stephens, Angela
(Aaron) Hannahs, and Lisa Burkhart, all of Barnesville;
ten grandchildren, Jesse D'Amico, Bailey Burkhart, Khiara
Tracy-Burkhart, Colin and Alexa Harshbarger, Megan,
Daniel Jr. and Michaela Stephens, Erin Hannahs, and
Samantha Burkhart. Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9
p.m. at the Kelly-Kemp-Bradio Funeral Home, 702 East
Main Street in Barnesville. Mass of Christian Burial, Monday,
10 a.m. at Assumption Catholic Church in Barnesville, with
Father Virgil Reischman officiating. Burial in Assumption
Cemetery, Barnesville, with full military graveside services
by Belmont County Council American Legion. Wake service
Sunday 8:30 p.m., and Knights of Columbus service 9 p.m.
Memorial contributions made to the Paul Burkhart Memorial
Scholarship Fund c/o Wesbanco Barnesville.


Gerald Lawrence Burkhart

Jerry L. Burkhart, 53, of 360 S. Broadway, Barnesville, died Friday in Barnesville Hospital. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Burkhart. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Wood Burkhart, a son, Jerry of Barnesville; two daughters, Mrs. Ted (Mary Margaret) Habak of Washington, Pa., and Mrs. Jim (Karen) Hanlon of Bethesda; his mother Marie Burkhart of Barnesville; a brother, Paul of
Barnesville; a grandson.
Burial in Assumption Church Cemetery, Barnesville, Ohio.


Joseph A. Burkhart

Five year old Joseph Burkhart is not listed in the family of Michael and Matilda Burkhart in the 1880 census.

In 1930, 54 year old farmer Joseph Burkhart owned a farm in Malaga Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Living with him hwere his wife, Margaret (44), and children Gertrude (18), Florence (16), Marian T. (15), John M. (13), Charles (11), Martha C. (9) and Alice L. (3 yrs, 3 mos). All of the children attended school except Gertrude and Alice.


Margaret Christena Schafer

According to the 1930 census, Margaret and her mother were born in Ohio, but her father was a native of Germany.


John M. Burkhart

Obituary from the Marietta Times, 7 Feb 2006:

WOODSFIELD — John M. Burkhart, 88, of Woodsfield,
died Monday (Feb. 6, 2006). Funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m.
Thursday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Miltons-
burg, Ohio. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednes-
day at Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield.

According to his great-niece, Melissa Burkhart Nelson, John Burkhart never married or had any children.


Helen Mary Burkhart

"Intoxication (cholera infantum)" is not cholera, nor does it have anything to do with alcohol intoxication. It is infectious diarrhea.

Cholera infantum: A common, non-contagious diarrhoea of young children, occurring in summer or autumn... characterised by gastric pain, vomiting, purgation, fever, and prostration. It was common among the poor and in hand-fed babies. Death frequently occurred in three to five days.


John Schafer

In 1900, German-born John Shafer (52, dob Apr 1848) owned a farm in Wooster Twp., Wayne Co., Ohio. Living with him were his wife, Catherine (37, dob Dec 1862) and children Anna M. (18, dob Jun 1883), Margaret C. (14, dob Jan 1886), and Elizabeth (10, dob 1890). The two younger girls attended school.


Catherine Warner

According to the 1900 census, Catherine and her mother were born in Ohio. Her father was a native of Germany. Catherine had given birth to four children, one of whom died prior to 1900.


Johann Hohmann

Records conflict on date of birth. Delores Snider in "St. Mary's -- 150 Years -- Fulda OH" gives 1785. But Manuela Kaib, citing church records in Mittelkalbach Germany, gives 26.June 1779.

According to "The German Beginning of Fulda Ohio," Johann Hohman Sailed to America on the Ulysses with his wife and youngest child, Johann Sebastian. The list of passengers for the Brig Ulysses show 50 year old sheppard, Johan Hohmann and his wife Anna Maria (49) and 10 year old Sebastian Hohmann. They were travelling from Mittelkalbach, Germany having left Bremen and arrived in Baltimore on July 6, 1835. Other Mittelkalbach residents aboard the Ulysses included future Fulda residents John Scho[e]ppner (47), Ottilia Scho[e]ppner (25), Peter Scho[e]ppner (24), Eva Scho[e]ppner (14), Maria Elonore Scho[e]ppner (9, Johannis Heil (31), Barbara Heil (27) and Gertrude Heil (4).

From "History of Noble County, Ohio, 1887:"
"John Hohman, called Doctor Hohman, came to [Enoch] township with his family in 1837, removing from Wheeling. He had some knowledge of medicine, and practiced for several years in the German settlement. His sons Joseph, Magnus, and John S., then single men, came to the township with him. Another son, Maurice, came in 1845. Dr. Hohman induced many Germans to come by writing to them of the advantages of the country."

At the time of the 1850 census, 65 year old John Hammond lived in Enoch Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his 64 year old wife, Margaret. With them lived Ambrose Archer (19). Ambrose was the brother of the Hohman's daughter-in-law Matilda Archer Hohman. John Hohman's occupation is listed as "none", while Ambrose Archer's is "farmer." Adjacent farms in the census belonged to John's son Sebastian and John Kress. John Hohman died later that year.


Anna Marie Margaretha Weber

In 1860, 74 year old Margaret (Weber) Hohman lived in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. The only other person living in the household was 29 year old clerk Charles Stark. Charles later married Margaret's granddaughter, Mary Philomena Hohman.

Johannes Baker

Source for place of birth: death certificate of son George.

In 1880, farmer John Baker (41) lived in Franklin Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife Elizabeth (38) and 11 children: John (18), Opolone (17 ?), Joseph (16), Rosanna (13), Mary (11), Barbara (9), George (7), Helen (6), Filamina (3), Ulric (2) and Florence (2 mos). All the children attended school except the youngest three. According to the census, everyone in the household was born in Ohio.


Elizabeth Yontz

According to the 1880 and 1910 census, Elizabeth's parents were natives of Germany. However, the 1920 census states that they were born in Ohio.

At the time of the 1910 census, widow Elizabeth Baker owned a farm in Franklin Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Living with her were her unmarried son, Alexander (32), grandson Ernest J. Zwick (10), and servant Katie Young (19). Ernest attended school. Elizabeth Baker could neither read nor write. Five of her thirteen children died prior to 1910. Her son Joseph lived a few doors away with his family.

In 1920, widow Elizabeth Baker (76) lived with the family of her son, Alexander in Franklin Twp.

Source for maiden name: 1927 death certificate of daughter Barbara Baker Hohman. Other children's (Allexander, George) death certificates give mother's maiden name as Baker or Becker.


Appolonia Baker

Appolonia Baker’s obituary appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 9 Dec 1926:
FORMER RESIDENT OF ETHEL CALLED AT WHEELING
Summerfield, O., Dec. 9 - The death of Miss Appolonia Baker
of Wheeling, W.Va occurred at an early hour Wednesday from a comp-
lication of diseases.
Miss Baker was a daughter of John and Elizabeth Baker and
was born and reared on a farm on Ethel Route but had been a resident
of Wheeling for many years.
Surviving are two brothers, George Baker of Wheeling, and
Joseph Baker of Caldwell, and three sisters, Mrs. Ralph Scott of Toledo
and Mrs. Nick Kuhn and Mrs. Magnus Hohman of Kuhn. Her death
was the third in the Baker family in the past year. The others were Mrs.
Joseph Dauner of Pittsburg and Alex Baker of Ethel.
Funeral services and interment will take place Friday in Wheeling.

ATTENDED FUNERAL
CALDWELL, O., Dec 16. --Joseph Baker and daughter have
returned to their home on Main street from Wheeling, where they were
called by the death and funeral of the former’s sister, Miss Appolonia
Baker, which occurred last Wednesday. Funeral services were held Friday.
Miss Baker was a former resident of Noble county.
This is the third death in the family within a year, a brother, Alex
Baker, of Swazey [Monroe county]. And a sister, Mrs. Joseph Danner of
Pittsburgh having passed away recently. Mrs. Nick Kuhn and Mrs. Magnus
Hohman of Kuhn are sisters of the deceased.


Edward John Schott

In 1910, Edward Schott was a 25 year old self-employed dairy wagon man in Plain Twp., Stark County, Ohio. He lived in a rented home with his wife Agnes (23) and their 2 month old daughter, Margaret.

On September 5, 1918, 33 year old Edward John Schott of 710 Navarre Rd., SW, Canton, Stark Co., Ohio registered for the military draft. According to his draft registration card, he was born on March 18, 1885 and was employed as a "Watching" [watchman?] for the berger Manufacturing Co., in canton, Stark Co., Ohio. His nearest relative was his wife, Agnes Mary Schott of 710 Navarre Rd., SW, Canton, Stark Co., Ohio. His physical description is given as medium height and build, with blue eyes and dark hair.

At the time of the 1920 census, 33 year old carpenter Edward and Agnes Schott rented a home at 709 Navarre St. SW in Canton, Ohio. Living with them were their children Margaret M. (9), Ralph J. (8), Madeline L. (6), Paul A. (4 yrs, 1 mo), Mildred (3 yrs 3 mos), and Leona (1 yr, 4 mos). According to the census, none of the children attended school. Edward worked as a carpenter.

In 1930, Edward J. (45) and Agnes M. (43) Schott owned a home in Lawrence Twp., Stark Co., Ohio, where they lived with their children Ralph J. (18), Madline L. (17), Paul A. (15). Mildred D. (13), Leona E. (11), Pauline E. (8), and Charles E. (4). Edward worked as a building carpenter. The Schott family did not own a radio set.

In Nov. 1939, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Schott, son Junior and daughters Pauline, Leona, and Margaret, of Canal Fulton, attended a party to celebrate the 25th wedding anniversary of Herman Baker and Amelia Schott Baker. Edward's wife, Agnes Baker Schott, was the sister of Herman Baker. Edward Schott and Amelia Schott Baker are believed to have been first cousins.


Agnes Mary Baker

Sources conflict on place of birth: Linda Kay Anderson states that Agnes Baker was born in Caldwell, Noble County, Ohio. Agnes Baker Schott's obituary states that she was a native of Swazey, Monroe County, Ohio. Death certificate states that she was born in Monroe County. Death certificate informant: daughter Madeline Schott Ault.


Agnes Baker Schott's obituary appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on March 19, 1942: HOLD FUNERAL FOR MRS. AGNES SCHOTT SUMMERFIELD -- Funeral services for Mrs. Agnes
Schott, wife of Edward Schott, of Canal Fulton, were
held at 10 o'clock this morning in the Catholic church
there and burial made in the Canal Fulton cemetery. Mrs. Schott was a native of Swazey, Monroe county
and was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Baker. She died Monday following a long illness.
Surviving in addition to her husband and children
are a brother, Herman Baker, of Lewisville and three
sisters, Miss Lenora Baker, of Cleveland, Mrs. Harry
Crum and Miss Emma Baker of Buckeye Lake. Mrs.
A. F. Fields and Mrs. L. A. Wheatley of Summersfield
are cousins of Mrs. Schott.


Ralph J. Schott

On April 2, 1945, Ralph J. Schott enlisted in the U. S. Army at Indianapolis, Indiana. His enlistment was ". . . for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law." According to his enlistment record, he was married at the time of his enlistment.


Herman Clement Baker

In 1920, 30 year old farmer Herman Baker lived with his wife Ameilia (31) on a farm they owned in Franklin Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Living with them was their daughter Dorothea (2 yrs 8 mos). All members of the household as well as Herman's and Amelia's parents were born in Ohio. Listed immediately before Herman on the census was Fulda native Joseph Zwick. Others listed on the census form with Herman and Amelia included Peter Zwick, John Bing and John Zwick.

In 1930, Herman C. Baker (40) and his wife Amelia M. (42) owned a farm in Franklin Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Also living in the household were their children Dorothy M. (12) and Earl J. (6). Dorothy attended school. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Herman's aunt Katherine Young Baker (widow of Alexander Baker) and John Bing.

Mr. and Mrs. Herman Baker and daughter Dorothy and sons Earl, and Roger Lee of Lewisville attended the annual Schott reunion on Sunday, July 30, 1933 at the fairgrounds in Marietta, Ohio. See notes of Jacob Schott for a complete list of attendees.

The following appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) on December 27, 1935: Mr. and Mrs. Herman Baker of Lewisville and children Roger Lee, and
Earl, and Miss Dorothy, who is a student at Ohio university, Athens, were
dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. N. F. Schott on East street,
Christmas day.

CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY
Mr. and Mrs. Herman Baker, near Lewisville, celebrated their 25th wedding
anniversary, Sunday [26 Nov 1939]. The affair also celebrated the 16th birthday
of their son, Earl Baker.
A turkey and chicken dinner and supper was served and covers were laid for
Mr. and Mrs. Baker and sons, Earl and Roger Lee, and daughter, Miss Dorothy,
Joseph Baker, Miss Emma Baker, Mr. Nick Schott, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence
Schott and daughters Vera and Connie, and Mrs. and Mrs. Henry Schott and
sons, Paul and Robert, Caldwell, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Crum and son, Paul, and
daughters Maxine and Norma Jean, and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bowlus and son,
Edward, of New Concord, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Schott and son, Junior and
daughters Pauline, Leona and Margaret, Canal Fulton.


Amelia Mary Schott

Mrs. Amelia Baker and son Roger of Lewisville attended the first annual Schott-Zwick family reunion in Caldwell, Ohio in August 1958. See notes of Henry Urban Schott for a complete list of attendees.

Amelia M. Baker, 100
BERLIN, Md. -- Amelia M. Baker, 100, of Berlin Nursing Home, formerly of Harriettsville and Lewisville, died Friday, May 13, in the nursing home.
She was born Feb. 21, 1888, at Harriettsville of Nicholas and Philomena Smithberger Schott. She was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church at Ocean City.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Brubach of Ocean City, Md.; one son, Roger Baker of Massillon; two brothers, Henry Schott of Caldwell and Clarence Schott of Gulf Port, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Baker, in 1962; and one son, Earl Baker in 1972.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Mount Olivet Cemetery at Caldwell with the Rev. Dale Tornes officiating.
Arrangements are being handled by Brubach-Watters Funeral Home in Summerfield.
