Dorothy Philomena Baker

Wedding announcement:
Miss Dorothy Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Baker of
Lewisville and Lawrence Brubach of Baltimore, Md., son of Mrs. J.
W. Brubach of Miltonsburg, were united in marriage last Saturday
morning at St. Joseph church at Burkhart with Rev. Schiele officiating.
Mrs. Brubach is a former Monroe county teacher and at present is
employed in the schools in northern Ohio. Mr. Brubach is employed
in Baltimore, Md.

Obituary:
CONSTRUCTION WORKER DIES IN PLUNGE
SUMMERFIELD - Earl J. Baker, 48, of Lewisville Route 2 died instantly at
2:30 p.m. Thursday [20 Jul 1972] of a compound skull fracture sustained in a 20-foot
fall at the Ohio Power Plant in Beverly, according to Dr. Kenneth Owen, Washington
County coroner. Baker was reportedly employed at the plant as a construction
foreman by Union Boiler.
Born Nov. 28, 1923, in Monroe County, he was a son of Amelia Schott Baker of
Lewisville and the late Herman C. Baker. He was a member of Local 639 of Labor
International of which he has served as president 10 years. He was also a member of
St. Joseph Catholic Church at Burkhart. A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a
member of the Woodsfield VFW and Summerfield American Legion post.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his widow, the former Mary Leach; one
daughter, Miss Marlene Baker of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sons, Joe of Kent and Larry
Dale of the home; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Bruback of Baltimore, Md.; and a brother,
Roger of Massillon.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev.
Fr. Charles Calabrese officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olive Cemetery at Caldwell.


Sebastian Zwick

In 1900, farmer Sebastian Zwick (32) and his wife Helena (29) lived in Bethel Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with their children Josephine B. (9), Lillie C. (7), Urban S. (5), Mary E. (3), and Anna E. (1)

By 1920, the family had moved to Louisville, Nimishillen Twp., Stark County, Ohio. The household consisted of Sebastian (53), his wife Ella (49), and children Raymond J. (19), William G. (16), Loretta I. (15), Charles V. (14), Lester C. (12), Mary A. (10), Helen D. (9), Gerald H. (7), and James A. (5), and granddaughter Grace Hazel (1 month).

Sebastian Zwick's obituary appeared in the Louisville Herald, page 1on , 6 Sep 1945:
Sebastian Zwick, 78, who has 14 children and 56
grandchildren, died Tuesday morning in his home at 602
Broad street following a heart seizure. A retired farmer, Mr.
Zwick came to Louisville 40 years ago from Monroe County.
He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church and Holy
Name Society.
His survivors are his widow, Mrs. Helena Katherine
Zwick of the home; seven sons, Urban of East Rochester, Ray-
mond, Charles, Lester, Gerald and James of Louisville, and
William Zwick of East Canton; seven daughters, Mrs. Esther
Ruflin of Maximo, Mrs. Loretta Paumier and Miss Helen Zwick
of the home, Mrs. Mary Jaeb, Mrs. Lillie Cuenot and Mrs. Edna
Hoover of Louisville, and Mrs. Josephine Ottle of Alliance.
He also is survived by five brothers, George and Clem-
ence of Louisville, Leander and Alex of Canton and Joseph Zwick,
one sister, Mrs. Anna Smithberger of Monroe County; 56 grand-
children and 10 great-grandchildren.
A requiem high mass will be sung Friday at 10 a.m. in
St. Louis Church Rev. Fr. Francis Palm. Burial will be in the
church cemetery. The body was taken to the home Wednesday
night from the Dwyer & Stier parlors.


Helena Catherine Burkhart

LOUISVILLE WOMAN SUCCUMBS, LEAVES 128 GRANDCHILDREN
Helen K. Zwick, 84, died Friday night [15 Oct 1954] at the home of a daughter,
Mrs. Floretta Paumier of 134 W. Main St., Louisville. She was born at Miltonsburg
in Monroe County and lived in the Louisville area 46 years. She was the widow of
Sebastian Zwick and a member of St. Louis Catholic Church and St. Ann's Altar
Society.
Surviving are seven sons, Charles, Lester, Gerald and James of Louisville, Urban
of East Rochester, Raymond of East Sparta, and William Zwick of New Franklin; six
daughters, Mrs. Frank Cuenot, Mrs. Edna Hoover, Mrs. Mary Jaeb and Miss Helen
Zwick, all of Louisville, Mrs. Paumier; one brother, S. V. Burkhart of Portsmouth; 60
grandchildren, and 68 great-grandchildren.
A Requiem High Mass will be sung at the church at 9:30 a.m. Monday. Burial will
be in St. Louis Cemetery. The body is at the Paquelet funeral home in Louisville where
friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. St. Ann's Altar Society will meet Sunday at 7:30
a. m. to recite the Rosary.

MRS. SEBASTIAN ZWICK
Mrs. Helena Zwick died Friday at the age of 84 in the home of her daughter, Mrs.
Loretta Paumier at 134 West Main St. She had lived here nearly fifty years and was
a member of St. Louis Catholic Church and St. Ann’s Altar and Rosary Society.
Survivors include seven sons, Charles, Lester, Gerald and James of Louisville, Urban
of East Rochester, Raymond of East Sparta and William of New Franklin; five daughters
besides Mrs. Paumier, Mrs. Frank Cuenot, Mrs. Edna Hoover, Mrs. Mary Jaeb and

Requiem High Mass was sung at the church Monday morning and burial in charge

Helen Dorothy Zwick

Miss Helen Zwick
Miss Zwick, 56, passed away last Friday [10 Feb 1967] after an extended illness. She was a former resident of Louisville and Harrisburg.
She is survived by 7 brothers, Urban of East Rochester, William of Minerva, Raymond, Charles, Lester, Gerald, and James, all of Louisville, three sisters, Mrs. Mary Jaeb of Canton, Mrs. Lillie Cuenot and Mrs. Esther Ruflin both of Louisville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Requiem High Mass was sung Tuesday in St. Louis Catholic Church and interment was in the church cemetery. Paquelet Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.


George Zwick

In 1880, 11 year old George Zwick lived in the household of his aunt and uncle Mary Ann (Zwick) and Henry Schneider (Snyder) in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio.

In 1920, 51 year old George Zwick lived on a farm that he owned in Louisville, Nimishillin Twp., Stark Co., Ohio with his wife Minnie (52) and daughters Ida M. (21), Florence M. (15), Agnes R. (13), Irene O. (12) and Anna M. (9). The youngest three girls attended school.

Obituary:
GEORGE ZWICK
At the age of 93, Mr. Zwick succumbed on Sunday. A
retired farmer, he had lived here since 1904, and had recently
resided in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Arthur Monter of 8436
Easton st.
Five other daughters survive him: Mrs. Margaret Gulling
and Mrs. Florence Bederman of Louisville; Sister M. James and
Sister M. Eucharia of Our Lady of the Elms at Akron; and Mrs.
Anna Wormald of Cuyahoga Falls; three half-brothers, Leander Sr.,
A. S. Zwick and Clement C. all of Canton; 26 grandchildren; 71 great
-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Wednesday services were held at Sacred Heart of Mary
Church at Harrisburg, with a grandson, Fr. Mark Zwick officiating.
Interment was in St. Louis Church cemetery.


Philomena Burkhart

Obituary:
Mrs. George Zwick, 65, of North Chapel street,
died late Monday night after an illness of one year. Mrs.
Zwick was born in Monroe county but had lived in this
vicinity for the past 28 years. Besides her husband, she
leaves one son, H. S. Zwick of Harrisburg, six daughters,
Sister James and Sister Eucharia of the Dominican convent
at Akron; Mrs. Marvin Gulling of Harrisburg; Mrs. John Bed-
erman of Canton and Mrs. Arthur Monter of Louisville and
Miss Anna of the home; two brothers, Frank Burkhart of
Woodsfield and F. V. Burkhart of Portsmouth; three sisters,
Mrs. Sebastian Zwick of Louisville, Mrs. Theresa Burkhart
and Mrs. Lucetta Haren of Woodsfield, and 20 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday morning at St. Louis
Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Ruffling, Rev. Fr. Buchholz and
rev. Fr. Kegg in charge. Burial in the church cemetery.


Ida M. Zwick

Ida entered the Sisters of St. Dominic as Sr. M. James. In 1981, Sister James was at Our Lady of the Elms in Akron, Ohio.


George Marx Zwick

Obituary:
George Zwick; the five-year-old son of Mr. and
Mrs. George Zwick, living north of Louisville, died Friday
morning. The child had been sick for a long time, his
sickness finally developing into pneumonia, which was
the cause of his death. George was a bright little boy;
and his death is keenly felt by his parents and friends.
Funeral services were held at St. Louis Catholic Church
Sunday afternoon and burial was made in the Catholic
cemetery.


Agnes R. Zwick

Agnes Zwick entered the convent as Sister Mary Eucharia. The following note appeared in The Louisville Herald on 8 Sep 1927 (pg 1).
A religious reception was given last Saturday morning at Our Lady of the Elms, Order
of St. Dominic, Akron at which time Miss Agnes Zwick took the name of Sister Mary
Eucharia. Mr. and Mrs. George Zwick and family, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Zwick and family,
and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Gulling were in attendance.

Obituary:
SISTER MARY EUCHARIA
A former resident of Louisville, Sister, Mary Eucharia, O.P., 58, died on Friday at
Our Lady of the Elms in Akron after a prolonged illness.
A Solemn Requiem High Mass was celebrated by her nephew, Fr. Mark Zwick, for
Sister Eucharia, the former Agnes Zwick of Louisville, daughter of the late George and
Philomena Zwick, at the convent of Our Lady of the Elms, Akron, on Monday, Feb. 1.
She is survived by her sisters, Mrs. Margaret Gulling and Mrs. Florence Bederman
of Louisville, Mrs. Irene Monter of Harrisburg, Mrs. Anna Wormald of Cuyahoga
Falls and Sr. Mary James of Akron.
Sr. Mary Eucharia formerly taught at the Elms High School and the grade school at
St. Bernard’s in Akron. Also at the Sacred Heart Academy in Akron and St. Dominic’s
school in Youngstown.


Martin Zwick

In 1910, Martin Zwick (40) was an inmate in the Massillon State Hospital in Perry Township, Stark County, Ohio. Although some of the inmates had occupations (within the hospital system), Martin did not.

Martin Zwick's obituary appeared in The Louisville Herald (pg 1) on 14 Mary 1914:
Martin Zwick died at the State hospital at Massillon, Tuesday eveing, May
6. He was committed to the institution five years ago, his health having become
imparired, but he was gradulally improving and his family hoped shortly to have
him return to his home.
Mr. Zwick was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marx Zwick of Louisville. He was born
and raised in Monroe County, Ohio. His age was forty-four years. He is survived
by his wife and five children, who reside in East Liverpool, Ohio; his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Marx Zwick, and four brothers, George, Sebastian, Alexander, and Clement
Zwick of Louisville, one brother and two sisters, Joseph and Miss Barbara Zwick and
Mrs. Frances Smithberger of Monroe County; and a brother and a half-brother,
Leander Zwick and George Maloney, of Lansing, Michigan. Mr. Zwick was of a
quiet disposition and industrious until his failing health prevented him from the
pursuit of his work.
The body was brought to the home of his parents Thursday evening. Funeral
services were held at St. Louis Catholic Church, Saturday morning, and were
conducted by Reverend Father Senner. Interment was made in St. Louis Cemetery.

Martin Zwick committed suicide by hanging himself in the state hospital, according to descendant Linda Kay Anderson.

The "Mrs. Frances Smithberger in Monroe County" mentioned in Martin's obituary is his sister Anna C. Zwick Smithberger.


Minnie I. Cline

In 1910, Minnie Zwick (33) rented a home on the east side of Liverpool Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. She had been married for 10 years, but her husband did not live in the household. All five of Minnie's children lived in the home with her: Nora E. (9), Clarence E. (8), Roland V. (6), Mary M. (3), and Anna P. (11 months). Nora and Clarence attended school. No one in the home was employed. According to the census, everyone in the household was born in Ohio, as were their parents.

In 1930, Minnie Hardman (53) rented a home for $5 a month in Yellow Creek Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. Mary was married, but her husband was not listed in the household. Other household members were Mary's daughter Laura R. Hardman (13) and Mary's son Rollin B. Zwick (26). Laura and Archie attended school. Rollin was the only member of the family who was employed. He worked as a laborer doing odd jobs. The family did not own a radio set.


Joseph Frank Zwick

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Zwick and daughter Lorena and son Clarence attended the annual Schott reunion on Sunday, July 30, 1933 at the fairgrounds in Marietta, Ohio. See notes of Jacob Schott for a complete list of attendees.

The following appeared in the Zanesville Signal on October 24, 1944:

of St. Henry's church for 50 years will celebrate their golden
wedding anniversary, Sunday at the 10 o'clock mass.
They are the parents of four daughters and three sons:

Henry Casper Smithberger

From the 1900 census: Twenty-seven year old farmer Henry Smithberger lived with his wife Tille and their three children, ages 3, 4 and 5. Also living in the house are Henry's brother James (10) and his sister Amelia (15). Henry and his parents were all born in Ohio. He was able to read, write and speak English; and he owns his farm free and clear. In 1910, Henry Smithberger, age 48, lived in Noble Co., OH with his 36 year old wife Matilda, and their six children.

In 1910, Henry C. Smithberger (38) and his wife Matilda (36) rented a farm in Elk Twp., Noble County, Ohio. They had been married for 17 years, and all six of their children were still living. Those children were Roy U. (15), Hilda (14), Alexander W. (12), Marie E. (8), Ida M. (4) and Edna M. (1 mo.). The four oldest children attended school.

Matilda Zwick

From the 1900 census: Tillie Zwick Smithberger was born in Ohio to a German born father. Her mother was born in Ohio. She had given birth to three children, all of whom are living. She can read, write and speak English.

Death notice from the Louisville [OH] Herald, 9 Jun 1910:
Mr. and Mrs. Marx Zwick, George and Sebastian Zwick
went to Harnetsville (sic), Ohio Friday, being called there by the
death of Mrs. Tillie Smithberger. Mrs. Smithberger was a daugh-
ter of Marx Zwick and is survived by her husband and a family
of six children, the youngest being but two months old. Funeral
services were held at Harnetsville, Saturday morning, where
internment was also made.


Alexander William Smithberger

Records conflict on date of birth: Mar 1897 (1900 census) vs.12 Mar 1898 (Snider, obituary, World War I draft registration card & Social Security Death Index).

On 12 Sep 1918, 20 year old Alexander William Smithberger of R.F.D. 2 of Dexter City filled out a U.S. military draft registration card. He gave his birthdate as March 12, 1898. He indicated that he was a farmer working for H. J. Smithberger. Alexander was described as being of medium height and build with gray eyes and brown hair, with no obvious physical disabilities.

Obituary:
Alex W. Smithberger, age 77, formerly of 214 Bowmanville St., Akron, died at the
Westbrook Park Nursing Home Canton early Monday morning [10 Nov 1975] after
an extended illness.
Born in Harriettsville, Ohio (Noble County) March 12 1898, he lived in the Akron
area 55 years. A self-employed painter, he retired in 1965. He was a member of Annun-
ciation Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council in Akron.
He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Marie Zimmerman of Massillon; five nieces, Mrs.
Raymond (Marjorie) Kilkenny, Mrs. Harold (Eileen) Begue, Mrs. Joseph (Delores) Samblanet,
Mrs. June Lewis of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. Dale (Sandy) Keller of Kingston, Penna., one
nephew, Larry Pillot of Solon, Ohio.
A Mass of Christian Burial was sung Wednesday 10 A.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church,
with burial in the church cemetery. Calling hours were Tuesday from 7 to 9 at the Paquelet
Funeral Home.


Kathleen Ann Schoeppner

Obituary:
Kathleen A. (Schoeppner) Stephens Smith, age 62 of
Freeport, OH, passed away unexpectedly Feb. 7, 2005 at
Aultman Hospital. She was born in Canton.
Preceded in death by parents, Bernard and Rita Schoep-
pner; two brothers, Gerald and Fred Schoeppner. Survived
by her husband of nine years, Roger L. Smith; two daughters,
Christine A. (John) Gerber of Louisville, Traci (Mike) Stoddard
of Canton; son, Todd M. Stephens of Freeport; five grand-
children, Brandin, Nicole, Johnny, Kelsey and Ian; sister,
Rebecca Young of Arizona. Funeral services will be Friday at
10 a.m. at the Welch-Sekeres-Lewis Funeral Home. Rev.
Edward Beneleit will officiate. Burial in Calvary Cemetery.
Calling hours Thursday 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home.


Francis John Smithberger

The 1880 and 1900 census show that George is one year older than his brother Francis. Anderson states that Francis is one year older than George.

On 12 Sep 1918, 44 year old Francis J. Smithberger of 1 Marr, Monroe County, Ohio filled out a U.S. military draft registration card. He gave his birthdate as Aug. 4, 1874. He indicated that he was a self-employed farmer and his nearest relative was Anna Smithberger. Francis was described as being of medium height and build with brown eyes and black hair, with no obvious physical disabilities.


Anna Catherine Zwick

Anna Zwick Smithberger’s obituary appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 25 Jun 1959:
SMITHBERGER RITES TO BE HELD FRIDAY
SUMMERFIELD, O. - Funeral services for Mrs. Anna
Smithberger, 77, of Marr, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday
in St. Henry’s Catholic church at Harriettsville with Rev.
Ashley Pettis officiating. Burial will be in the church
cemetery in charge of the Brubach Funeral Home.
Mrs. Smithberger died Tuesday in Marietta Memorial
Hospital where she had been admitted two hours earlier.


Omer Frances Smithberger

Omer Smithberger never married.
