Feb. 1, 1942 - Oct. 7, 2005
Robert Camphire, former dean of continuing education
at the Boyce Campus of Community College of Allegheny
County and past president of the Monroeville Area Chamber
of Commerce, died Friday in Hollywood, Fla., of complica-
tions following surgery. He was 63.
Since retiring in 2000, Mr. Camphire and his wife, Alma,
spent their summers in Churchill and their winters in Ft.
Lauderdale, Fla., allowing him to indulge his passions for
reading and tennis.
"He was passionate about literature," said his son, Geoff,
of Burke, Va. "Any time you saw him he had a book under
his arm. I think that's the way a lot of people will remember
him."
Others will recall the advice Mr. Camphire provided in
his nearly 30 years in education.
Mr. Camphire was an administrator with CCAC from 1971
to 2000. He served many years at the Boyce Campus over-
seeing certificate and degree programs for professionals
and others in mid-career seeking to deepen their knowledge,
skills and experience.
"He excelled at helping people figure out what they wanted
to do next and how to get there," Geoff Camphire said.
Besides his work with the Monroeville Area Chamber of
Commerce, Mr. Camphire was a member of the Rotary Club
of Monroeville from 1982 to 1996.
Besides his wife and son Geoff, Mr. Camphire is survived by
another son, Jay, of Orlando, Fla.; brothers, Jack, of Edinboro,
Erie County, and Tom, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two grand-
