Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

Magnus Charles Hohmann

The descendants of Magnus Hohmann are the only Fulda Hohman descendants to retain the second "n" at the end of "Hohmann." All other Hohmans have dropped the last "n."

In 1900, 24 year old Magnus Hohman (Oct 1875) lived with his wife of 4 years, Tillie (23 - Sept 1876) and children, Henrietta (1 - Oct 1898) and William (4 mos - Feb 1900) in a 2 family home they rented a part of at 2163 Webster Ave., in Pittsburgh Ward 13 [Hill District], Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Magnus worked as a driver (beer). Magnus and Tillie were born in Ohio as were their parents. The children were born in Pennsylvania.

In 1910, 35 year old M. C. Hohman (one "N") owned a mortgaged home at 2501 Hallett St. in Pittsburgh's 5th Ward. He lived there with his wife of 12 years, Otillia (34) and six children: Henrietta (11), William (10), Raymond (8), Walter (6), Maria (3) and Joseph (11 months). The oldest four children attended school. A seventh child died prior to 1910. The census indicates that this was the first marriage for both Magnus and Otillia. Magnus was employed as a laundry wagon driver. A portion of the Hohman home was rented to a German couple, John and Theresa Groetsch.

The 1920 census shows Magnus Hohman (44) and Ottilia (43) living in a mortgaged home they owned at 5120 Friendship Ave. in Pittsburgh's 8th Ward (Bloomfield). Living with them were their children Henrietta M. (21), William L. (19), Raymond A. (17), Maria (13), Joseph A. (10), Paul V. (9 yrs 5 mos), Elizabeth A. (8 yrs 4 mos) and Agnes (7). Magnus drove a laundry truck, Henrietta worked as a stenographer in a bank and William and Raymond worked as helpers on a laundry truck. The remaining children all attended school. Magnus and Otillia were born in Ohio, the children in Pennsylvania.

In 1930, 54 year old Magn?? Hohmann still lived with his wife Otilia (53) at 5120 Friendship Ave. Their home was valued at $15,000. Living with them were their children Marie (27), Joseph (20), Paul(19 ), Elizabeth (18 yrs) and Agnes (16). Based on census data, they had been married for 32 years. Magnus worked as a delivery man for a laundry, as did Joseph. Marie worked as a stenographer for the gas company and Elizabeth as a stenographer for a hospital. Paul and Agnes attended school. Magnus and Otillia were born in Ohio, the children in Pennsylvania. The family owned a radio set.

Ottilia Miller

In "St. Mary's -- 150 Years -- Fulda, OH" author Dolores Snider lists two marriages for Ottilia Miller:
1) Leonard Herbst (b. 1874) marriage date Nov 1899, and
2) Magnus Hohman (b. 1875) marriage date unknown.

The 1900 census shows Leonard Herbst and his new wife Olivia living in Braddock, Allegheny County, PA. Olivia's birthdate in the census (Mar 1877) does not match church records for Otillia Miller (Sep 1876). Olivia and Leonard had been married only a few months at the time of the census, and had no children.

The 1910 census shows M(agnus) C. Hohman and his wife Otillia, married c. 1898, living in Pittsburgh with six children, the oldest of whom is 11. It is the first marriage for both Magnus and Otillia. Magnus Hohman was not found in a search of the index for the 1900 census.

A careful review of these facts strongly suggests that the wives of Leonard Herbst and Magnus Hohman are not the same person.

Leonard A. Herbst

In "St. Mary's -- 150 Years -- Fulda, OH" author Dolores Snider states that Leonard Herbst married Ottilia Miller, daughter of Henry Miller, on date 08 Nov 1899. It lists a second husband for Ottilia: Magnus Charles Hohman. Evidence suggests that the wives of Leonard Herbst and Magnus Hohman are two different people. (See notes on Ottilia Miller for more details.)

In 1900, Leonard Harbst (26) and his wife Olivia M. (23) owned a mortgaged house at 727 Helena St. in Braddock, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Olivia's birthdate (Mar 1877) does not match that for Ottilia Miller (Sep 1876). Leonard's occupation was listed as "roll hann." Living next door was Leonard's widowed mother, Barbara Roehrig Herbst.

In 1910, Leonard A. Herbst (36) and his wife Olivia (33) owned a mortgaged home at 659 First St. in Braddock, where they lived with their four children, Wilbert (9), Walter (7), Clyde (5), and Agnes (11 months). A fifth child died prior to 1910. The three oldest children attended shcool. Leonard was employed as a laborer in the steel works.

In 1920, 46 year old Leonard Herbst lived with his wife Olivia (42) in a home they owned at 659 First St. in Braddock. Living with them were their children Wilbert (19), Walter (16), Clyde (14), Agnes (11), Paul (7), and Edna (6). Clyde, Agnes, Paul and Edna attended school. Leonard worked as a leverman in a steel mill, Wilbert as a helper for a brick layer and Walter as a soldier in a "barracks." Leonard and Olivia were born in Ohio as were Olivia's parents. Leonard's father was born in the "United States" and his mother in West Virginia.

At the time of the 1930 census, Leonard (56) and Olivia (52) Herbst still lived at 659 First St. Their home was valued at $7000. Living with them were their children Walter (26), Agnes (21), and Paul (17). None of the children attended school. Leonard was employed as a roll hand in a steel mill. The Herbst family did not own a radio set. Another Fulda family, John and Maggie (Miller) Hartman, lived two doors away.
