Notes

Roy Urban Smithberger

Records conflict on date of birth: July 1894 (1900 census) vs. 24 Jun 1894 (Snider) vs. 24 Jul 1894 (draft registration cards). Sources also conflict on Roy's wife's name: Mildred ("History of the Smithberger Family...") vs. Daisy (1930 census and www.ancestry.com's One World Tree).

Two US military draft registration cards were filled out for Roy Urban Smithberger within a few days of each other in June 1917. Although each card contains the Roy Smithberger's signature, the two signatures are markedly different.

Both cards give the registrant's name as Roy Urban Smithberger and date and place of birth as July 24, 1894 in Harriettsville, Ohio. They both state that Roy was a farm laborer working for Wm. Harthmeyer in Belle Plains, Iowa. The cards also both describe Roy as being of medium height and slender build with blue eyes and light hair.

The first card, filled out on 5 Jun 1917 in Noble County, Ohio, states that Roy was a resident of Harriettsville, Ohio, and that he was partly responsible for the welfare of two sisters under the age of 12.

The second card, filled out on 9 Jun 1917 in Benton County, Iowa, over 700 miles from Noble County, Ohio. This card stated that Roy was a resident of Dexter City, Ohio and that he had no dependents.
