Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

Joseph Huffman

Also known as John Joseph Huffman.

In 1900, 30 year old Joseph Huffman rented a home at the rear of 145 Camp Ave., Braddock, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He lived there with his wife of five years, Rosina (25) and their two sons, William (3) and Ernest (1). Joseph worked as a laborer in a nail mill. Joseph and his parents were natives of Ohio.

In 1920, the family consisted of Joseph (34), his wife of 15 years, Rosina (34), and their sons William (13), Ernest F. (11), and Elmer J. (20). All three boys attended school and were natives of Pennsylvania. Joseph worked as a fitter at the electric works. The family owned a mortgaged home at 138 Comrie Ave. in Braddock. The house next door was owned by Fulda natives Leonard and Catherine (Singer) Schafer.

At the time of the 1920 census, Joseph (50) and Roseanna (45) Huffman owned a home at 138 Comrie Ave. in Braddock's 4th Ward. Living with them were their sons, William P. (23), Francis E. (21) and Elmer (19). Joseph worked as a storekeeper in a paint store.

By 1930, Joseph and Rosina Huffman had moved to Canton, Ohio. They owned a home worth $3300 at 1400 Vine Ave. SW. Neither Joseph nor Rosina was employed. They had a roomer named Joseph Miller (35). The family did not own a radio set.

Rosina Hartman

According to the 1910 census, Rosina gave birth to three children, all of whom were alive in 1910.

Mary Anna Hartman

The 1910 census raises some questions about Annie Hartman Arnold Werl. The census indicates that this is Annie's second marriage, and John's first. They had been married for six years. (So far, so good.) However, it states that Annie has never had children. This conflicts with records of St. Marys Church in Fulda, Ohio, which say Annie had a child named John A. by her first husband, George Arnold, to whom she was married from 1894 until his death in 1900. Snider indicates that this child lived to adulthood and married Rosa Coletta Hupp (1891-1957), but the newspaper wedding announcement and census records strongly suggest that the John Arnold who married Coletta Hupp is not the son of Mary Ann Hartman and George Arnold.

Records conflict on birth date 10 Jun 1878 (Snider) vs. 20 Jun 1878 (death certificate),

John A. Arnold

Twelve year old John Arnold was not listed with his mother and stepfather (John Werl) in the 1910 census in North Braddock, PA. It may be that John stayed with relatives in Fulda and never came to Braddock. It may also be that he died shortly after birth. John's mother's nephew, Ed Schweinberg, knew that Annie's first husband died in Ohio, but Ed was not aware that Annie had a child from that marriage.

John Werl

Edward Schweinberg says "Aunt Annie" Werl used to say "I married a man younger than my niece." (i.e, younger than Laura Singer Schweinberg b. 1883) Well, almost. According to the 1910, John Werl was 28, which would make his year of birth 1882. Annie was 31 at the time of the census.

Ed Schweinberg remembers John as a blacksmith who lived on Stokes Ave. in Braddock. The census confirms that John Werl owned his own blacksmith shop. The Werls lived in a mortgaged house at 622 Stokes Ave. in North Braddock. With them lived a 31 year old Irish boarder named David Hall, and John's 24 year old brother Charles (?), who was born in Pennsylvania. Charles and David were employed in as blacksmiths, presumably by John.

John Werl was born in Germany and came to America in 1885, when he was about 3 years old. He was a naturalized citizen. John was able to read and write.

Ignatius Hartman

The following note appeared in The Caldwell Citizens Press on 2 Feb 1882:

In 1900, "Ignis Hartman" lived with the family of his sister and brother-in-law Elizabeth and Paul Nau in their home on Halket Ave. in Braddock, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was employed as a day laborer.

Although there is a large contingent of Arnold families in Delores sniders "St. Mary's 150 Years," Anna Arnold is not listed among the children born in the parish. Her marriage is noted, but her father's name is not.

Johann Cornett

Sources conflict on date of birth:
1 Apr 1833 -- gravestone

In 1910, Ottilia Cornett (33) was listed as a boarder in a home at the corner of Stuben St. and Wabash Ave. in Pittsburgh. Her occupation was schoolteacher in a Catholic school. The residence was home to 13 unmarried women between the ages of 18 and 49. All were of German heritage, and all but one were schoolteachers. There is no indication in the census that this was a convent.

Ignatz Cornett

AKA Ignatius Cornett. Sources conflict on dates: Delores Snider gives birth date as 6 Jun 1884 and date of death as 5 Aug 1884. Bertha Hartman and Tom Singer give 21 May 1884 as date of birth and death. The local newspaper, The Caldwell Citizens' Press reported this birth on 22 May 1884:
Birth -- May 6th, to John and Barbara Carnet, a son.

Henry Miller

At the time of the 1870 census, 29 year old Henry Miller lived on a farm worth $4500 in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his wife Elizabeth (24) and their children Mary A. (8), Anna (6), Catherine (4), and Lewis (2). Only Mary attended school. Everyone in the family was born in Ohio. Also living in the household was a 20 year old German-born farm hand named John Baccus. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Patterson Yoho and Wendell Lori.

In 1880, 39 year old farmer Henry Miller lived in Enoch Twp. with his wife Elizabeth (35) and nine children: Hannah (15), Kate (13), Lewis (11), Margaret (9), Edward (7), Gertrude (5), Matilda (3), Clara (2), and Martin (1 month). According to the census, none of the children attended school. (It should be noted that the census taker did not mark the "attended school" column for any of the children on that page of the census.) Neighboring households in the census were those of Leonard Roehrig and John Schockling.

In 1900, 59 year old farmer Henry Miller lived on a farm that he owned in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his second wife Mary (56) and his two youngest children from his first marriage: Leo (17), and Enots (15). In the census, Henry's household is listed next to that of his younger brother Andy.

Elizabeth Michel

According to an report that appeared in the "Fulda" column of The Caldwell Citizens' Press on 18 Jan 1883, the marriage of "Henry Mueller and Elizabeth Michel" was the first marriage solemnized by Rev. Damien Kluber at the Catholic church in Fulda.

The 1900 census entry for Elizabeth's daughter Mary (Marian) Miller Schott states that her parents were born in Ohio.

Leo Miller

The "Fulda" column of the Caldwell Citizens' Press stated on 30 Nov 1882:
Birth -- On the 18th, to Henry and Elizabeth Muller, a son.

In 1900, 17 year old Leo Miller lived and worked on the farm of his father and step-mother in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio.

Joseph Nau

Three men named Nau settled in the Fulda area: Henry, Joseph, and Paul. Although they are often referred to as brothers, there is no evidence to support this.

In 1860, 31 year old Hessian-born farmer lived in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his wife Marianna (28) and children John (3) and Mary (6 months).

At the time of the 1870 census "Joseph Now" (48) lived in Enoch Twp. with his wife Martina (45) and children John (13), Powell (8), Henry (4), and Hannah (2). The oldest two boys attended school. Joseph Nau was unable to read or write. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Paul Nau and Louis Ritterbeck. Henry Nau's farm was also located nearby.

In June 1880, Joseph (55) and Martina (53) Nau were still living in Enoch Twp. with five children: John (23), Paul (17), Henry (15), Hannah (13), and Catherine (6). All of the children except Catherine attended school. According to the census, Joseph and Martina were born in Hesse, John was born in West Virginia, and the younger children were all born in Ohio. Neighboring farms in the census were those of Leonard Miller and Wendel Lori.

On 20 Mar 1884, the Fulda column of The Caldwell Citizens' Press reported:
Joseph Now, Jr. sold his farm of 40 acres to John A. Armstrong for
$1,400. Mr. Now is going west.
They can't have moved too far, though... Joseph was back in Enoch Twp. at the time of the 1900 census, and several of the children were married and/or buried in St. Mary's in Fulda, OH as late as 1924.

In 1900, 73 year old farmer Joseph Nau lived on a farm that he owned in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 72 year old wife and two of their unmarried children: Henry (35) and Anna (26). Joseph was born in Germany. He married Martina Engel there and they emmigrated to America with their infant son John in 1858. Joseph Nau was a naturalized citizen. Joseph spoke English, but could not read or write.

Joseph Nau has not been found in the 1910 or 1920 census.

Martina Marianna Engel

Records conflict. Donald Saul give date of death as 1907. Delores Snider indicates that date of death is Apr 1909.

Ms. Snider states that the family of Joseph and Martina Nau "moved west in 1884." They can't have moved too far, though... several of the children were married and/or buried in St. Mary's in Fulda, OH as late as 1924.

According to the census, five of Martina Engel Nau's six children were still living in 1900. Their daughter Mary died in 1863 at age 3. Martina came to America in 1858 with her husband and infant son. She could not read, write, or speak English.

Julia was born in Ohio as was her mother. Albert's parents and Julia's father were born in Germany.

According to Julia's cousin, Ed Schwinberg, later, Albert, Julia and their nine children lived in a very small two bedroom house on Comrie Ave. Albert had a big store in Braddock.

At the time of the 1910 census, the Bruggeman owned a mortgaged home at 100 Comrie Ave. The household consisted of Albert M. (35) and his wife Julia (37), and their children Laura M.
