and was preceded in death by her husband, Donald C. Streiber who passed

Joseph Schafer

In 1900, 29 year old Joseph Schafer was a hired hand on the farm of Thomas J. Smithberger in Elk Twp., Noble County, Ohio.

At the time of the 1910 census, Joseph (39) and Margarette (32) Schafer rented a home at 13 Center St. in Braddock, Allegheny County, PA. Living with them was Margarette's brother Adolph Miller (19). The Schafers did not have any children. Joseph's occupation was "skilled laborer." His brother-in-law was a building carpenter.

The couple has not been found in the 1920 census. Soundex variations were searched.

In 1930, 58 year old Joseph Schaffer owned a home worth $3000 at 104 Comrie Ave. in the 4th Ward of Braddock. Living with him was his 32 year old wife, Madeline. One of the questions in the 1930 census is "age at first marriage." Joseph was 28 and Madeline was 29 when each was first married. Due to the disparity in their ages, this means that Madeline was not Joseph's first wife. According to the census, Joseph was a native of Ohio, as was his mother. His father was German. Madeline and her parents were from Pennsylvania. Joseph was a laborer for an electric manufacturer. A portion of their home was rented for $22 a month to the family of 22 year old Alexander Kerr, who had a wife and two small children. The Schaffers did not own a radio set, but their tenants did.

According to the obituary of his brother Andy, Joseph Shafer lived in Braddock in 1950.

Joseph is buried next to his first wife, Margaret, according to the tombstone inscription. Their surname is spelled "Schaffer."

Margaret Miller

In 1900, unmaarried 22 year old Margaret Miller is not listed in the household of her parents and siblings.

Katharina Miller

Sources conflict on year of birth: Jan 1887 (1900 census) vs. 3 Jan 1888 (Snider).
