MUTH, George Leonard, 69, of Roanoke, died
Tuesday, February 16, 1993 at his home. A native of Hunt-
ington, W.Va., he had been a Roanoke resident for the
past 32 years. He retired as a sales representative with
the R. G. Brewton Co. after 26 years of service. He was a
member of the D.A.V., the American Legion, and was a
charter member of the Botetourt Country Club. He was a
U.S. Navy World War II veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rinard
and Agnes Muth, a brother, Charles A. Muth. Survivors
include his wife, Rita Mae Muth; one son and daughter-in-
law, Scott E. and Martha C. Muth of Thomasville, N.C.; two
daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl M. and Ron C. Poff, Salem,
Sheila M. and Norman L. Hyde, Richmond; three brothers,
Joseph M. Muse (sic) and Robert A. muse, both of Huntington,
W.Va.; John R. Muse, Vermillion, Ohio; three sisters, Helen L.
Wilson, Proctorville, Ohio; Barbara A. McCrae, Mainia, Fla.;
Kathleen M. Nease, Fincastle; one grandson, Ryan C. Poff,
Salem.
A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at St.
Andrew’s Catholic Church, Roanoke. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the
funeral home. Contributions may be made to the D.A.V. or a
favorite charity. Arrangements by John M. Oakey and Son
Funeral Home, Salem.

MUTH, Rita Mae Howald, 67, of Roanoke, went to
be with the Lord Friday, May 17, 2002. A mother, grandmother,
devout Catholic, pet lover, and avid gardener, Mrs. Muth was
born on Nov. 7, 1934 in Akron, Ohio. After marrying in 1955,
she moved to Roanoke in 1960 with her husband, George
Leonard Muth, to raise her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who
passed away February 16, 1993. She is survived by three
children and two grandchildren: a daughter, Cheryl Muth Poff
and son-in-law Ronald Poff, of Salem; a son, Scott E. Muth
and daughter-in-law, Martha C. Muth of Thomasville, N.C.;
and a daughter, Sheila Muth Hyde and son-in-law, Norman
L. Hyde of Richmond; grandsons Ryan Craig Poff and Joshua
George Hyde.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held Monday, May 20,
2002 at 3 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church,
314 Turner Rd., Salem, Va., 387-0491, with Father Remi Sojka
officiating. The family will receive friends one half hour before
and after the service. Arrangements by John M. Oakey & Son
Salem Funeral Home.

Charles Austin Muth

Charles Muth served in the Army during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He attained the rank of Lt. Colonel in the Airborne Infantry. He was also president of SEP, Inc. in Huntington, WV.

Charles was given a crystal bowl in Feb 1970 by his cousin Lena Singer Long. The bowl had been a wedding present given to Anton and Lena (Singer) Muth in 1883. (Anton and Lena Muth are Charles Muth's grandparents.) Lena Singer Muth gave the bowl to her niece Lena Singer Long in 1936. She in turn gave the bowl to Charles Muth.

Charles Austin Muth, together with Irene Fox, compiled "The Singer Family History" in 1970. He traveled to old farms and homesteads throughout West Virginia and southeastern Ohio. He visited relatives to gather as much information as possible to make the book accurate and interesting. He went to many churches in the area to examine original records, and he corresponded with friends in Germany to research records there.

James Everett Ball

James Bail served in the Armed Forces as a light helicopter pilot and was shot down in Vietnam. He survived and returned home.

John Magnus Musher Sr.

The 1860 census records the family's surname as Mercer. At that time, 28 year old farmer John Mercer lived in Jefferson Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 25 year old wife Catherine and their children George (5), Elizabeth (4), and Catherine (1). Also living in the household was John's 12 year old brother-in-law Adam Miller. Neither John nor Catherine could read or write.

By 1880, the family had moved to a farm Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. The household contained John Musher (53), his wife Catherine (45) and sons John (18) and Joseph (16). Both boys attended school. Also living in he home were John's 23 year old married daughter "Elizabeth Moot" (Muth) and her children John (2) and Magie (1). Elizabeth's husband Theodore Muth did not live with them at the time of the census. According to the census, the parents of John Musher Sr. were born in France. Adjacent households in the census were those of L. G. Paxton and John W. Ball.

According to records at St. Mary's in Fulda, the Musher family moved to Pittsburgh, PA in 1881. John Musher, Sr. has not been found in any census after 1880.


Anna Catharina Miller

Five of Catherine Miller Musher's nine children survived to adulthood.

Catherine Miller Marscher died 17 Jan 1882 and was buried with her sister, Maria Miller Singer and her niece Applona Singer on Nunnery Hill in Allegheny City (Pittsburgh) PA. No death record could be found for Catherine Miller Marcher (Musher) for the years 1881-1882 by the Allegheny County Health Dept. A record was found in the death register of St. Wenceslaus church. Pg 329, year 1882.


Marian Musher

Eight yeawr old Marian Musher was not listed with the family in the 1860 census. It is presumed that she died before then.


Joseph Musher

In 1910, unmarried "Jerry" Musher lived in the home of his brother, John, in Pittsburgh. Both men worked as laborers in a rolling mill.

At the time of the 1930 census, Joseph Musher (65) lived in the Home for the Aged run by the Little Sisters of the Poor in Pittsburgh.
