Edward Jacob Burkhart

Sources conflict on place of birth:
Bethel Twp., Monroe Co., OH -- Charlie Burkhart
Fulda, [Noble Co.,] OH -- death certificate

In 1910, Edward (32) and Sarah (30) Burkhart owned a farm free and clear in Ludlow Twp., Washington County, Ohio. This was the first marriage for both of them, and they'd been married for four years, according to the census. Living in the household with Edward and Sarah were their children, Thelma (3), Paul (1) and Thurman (10). The children were listed in that order, rather than the usual oldest-to-youngest order. Thurman attended school in 1910. The census stated that Sarah had given birth to three children, all of whom were still living. Sarah was a native of Pennsylvania; everyone else in the home was born in Ohio.

On 12 Sep 1918, Edward Jacob Burkhart of RFD 4, New Matamoros, Washington County, Ohio registered for the US military draft. He gave his date of birth as 1 Dec 1876. Edward stated that he was employed as a laborer at Smith and Dum (?) in New Matamoros. His closest relative was Sarah Burkhart, also of New Matamoros. Edward was described as being of medium height and build with brown eyes and black hair.

At the time of the 1920 census, Edward (43) and Sara (41) Burkhart rented a farm in Ludlow Twp. The other members of the household were their children Thelma E. (12), Paul E. (10), Alma (9), Gilbert (8), Lawrence (6), Bernice (4 yrs, 2 mos), Robert (2 yrs 4 mos), and Gerald (4 mos). Only Paul and Thelma attended school. According to the census, everyone in the home was born in Ohio except Sara, who was a native of Pennsylvania. The census stated that Edward's father was from Germany and his mother was from Ohio. Sara's father and mother were born in Pennsylvania and Ohio, respectively.

In 1930, widower Edward J. Burkhart (53) owned a home worth $4000 at 911 Warren in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio. Living with him were his unmarried children Thelma (22), Paul E. (21), Alma C. (19), Gilbert C. (18), Lawrence W. (16), Bernice (14), Robert G. (12), Gerald V. (10), and Mary (8). The youngest five children attended school. Edward was employed as a house carpenter and his oldest son Paul worked as a salesman in a radio shop. Surprisingly (given Paul's occupation) the family did not own a radio set. According to the census, everyone in the household was a native of Ohio, as were their parents.

Death certificate informant was Edward's son Robert.

Thurman Burkhart

Also known as Thurman Trenton Burkhart (per researcher C. Burkhardt) and Thurman Jerome Burkhart (per researcher J. Wright).

There are several unresolved issues regarding Thurman Burkhart:
His birth predates his parents' marriage by six years.
He is listed out-of-order with his siblings in the 1910 census.
There is a seven year gap between Thurman's birth and that of his next sibling, Thelma.
The 1910 census states that his father was born in Ohio and his mother in Pennsylvania, which suggests that Sara Muth Burkhart may have been his mother. Further research needs to be done to clarify circumstances surrounding Thurman's birth.

In 1930, 22 year old Thelma Burkhart lived with her widowed father and younger siblings in Marietta, Ohio. She was not employed outside the home. Thelma never married.

Anthony Frederick Muth

Sources conflict on place of birth:
Ohio --

Known as Antony in the 1900 census; Frederick in the 1910 census. In 1910, he worked at odd jobs in an oil field.

The handwriting on the page of the 1920 census is difficult to read. It appears to state A. F. Muth, a 30 year old native of Ohio, rented a home on Main St. in Eastland, Texas. The name of his 22 year old wife is illegible (possibly also "A.F."). Also living in the home were their children, a 2 year old daughter named Wilfrid and a 3 month old son named Fred. Anthony worked as a driller. His wife was a native of West Virginia, the daughter was born in Kansas, and Fred was born in Texas.

At the time of the 1930 census, Fred (40) and Cora (33) Muth rented a home for $55 a month in Russell, Kansas. Living with them were their children Frederick (10), Thomas (8), Nadine (5), and Robert (1 year, 8 mos). The two oldest children attended school. The children's birhtplaces indicate that the family moved around a lot: Frederick was born in Texas, Thomas and Nadine were natives of Kansas, and Robert was born in Colorado. Fred and Cora were from Ohio and West Virginia, respectively. Fred worked as a driller in an oil field.

From the Great Bend (Kansas) Tribune, 19 Nov 1972:
CHASE, Kan. - Anthony “Fred” Muth, 83, died Friday evening at the Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend, following a year-long illness. He was born June 13, 1889, in Pennsylvania. He married Cora Naylor July 7, 1916 at Charleston, W. Va. He was a retired oil field driller and had lived in the Chase community for the past 40 years.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Chase.
Survivors include the widow of the home; two sons, Fred E., Steamboat Springs, Colo. and Ray, Great Bend; four daughters, Mrs. G. E. Brown, Golden, Colo.; Mrs. Terry Vance, Chatsworth, Ill.; Mrs. Curt Ingham, Chase, and Mrs. John Lynn, Edgewater, Colo.; three brothers, Bill, Elko, Nev.; Charles, Wichita, and Paul, McPherson; one sister, Mary Deggan, Florida; 30 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
There will be a rosary at 7:30 this evening at Crawford-Miller Mortuary, Lyons. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church, Msgr. George Schmidt officiating. Burial in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. today.

Wilfred Muth

J. Wright states that dates of birth and death for Wilfred are 1889 and 1897, respectively. Since the parents were born in the late 1890s, this cannot be right. Correct dates for this person have not been determined.

The 1920 census lists a 2 year old daughter of A. F. Muth named Wilfred. This child does not appear in the 1930 census.
