In 1900, a 39 year old unmarried man named Andy Burkhart lived and worked on the farm of 57 year old widow Elizabeth Baker in Stuebenville City, Franklin Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. It has not been proven that this Andy Burkhart is the son of Anthony Burkhart and Hannah Kuhn.

At the time of the 1920 census, Andy P. Burkhart (58) lived on a farm headed by his brother Joseph (52). Also living on the farm were Andy's elderly parents, Anthony (89) and Hannah Burkhart (83) and his brother Adam (42). Andy was listed as being single.

Also living in the household were five of Elizabeth Burkhart's grandchildren -- Rosan's children: Elizabeth (16), Celia (6), Tresie (4), Simon (9), and Jacob (7). Also living in the household were Rosa's children Jacob (17) and Cilia (16), both of whom attended school and could read and write. The remains of Mrs. Rosa Burkhart who died at the state hospital, Columbus,
last Wednesday night was brought to Barnesville Thursday night and taken to the
H. L. Undertaking parlors where she was prepared for burial. On Friday, the body
was removed to the home of her brother, George N. Burkhard., south of town and
funeral was held on Saturday morning from the local Church of the Assumption
at nine o'clock conducted by Rev. J. G. Mehler and interment was made in Catholic
Cemetery.
The deceased was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Burkhard and was born at
Burkhart Station more than sixty years ago.
She was a devout Catholic, but owing to her afflictions was denied many privileges.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons; one daughter lives in Wheeling, two
at Burkhart Station; two sons in Montana. Besides these she is survived by two
brothers, Edward of Burkhart Station and George N. south of town.

It is not known what the "afflictions" described in Rosa's obituary were. It is possible that she had epilepsy, since some sarcraments were denied to epileptics by the Catholic church. (Epileptics could not enter the priesthood or marry in the church.)

Each of the three census entries for Rosa Burkhart as an adult has a different marital status -- divorced in 1900, married in 1910, and widowed in 1920. Rosa's husband did not die until 1936.

Jacob Burkhart,42 year old bachelor veteran of the World war was found dead
in his Brown Gulch cabin late Wednesday, the lower part of his head shot away
by a high powered rifle.
All indications pointed to suicide and Acting Coronor Eugene McCarthy said he
was satisfied that the man had killed himself. He apparently had placed the rifle barrel
in his mouth and discharged the weapon. Burkhart's body was discovered by a
neighbor boy who passed the cabin where the man had lived alone. Investigating ,
McCarthy said he found no notes or other evidence left by the man to indicate that he
contemplated suicide. Burkhart's brother, who lives only a short distance away from
the place where the body was found, said that Jacob had suffered a partial stroke
