Mary Ann Weisend

Mary Ann Weisend Becker Yontz gave birth to sixtieen children.


John Yontz

John Jontz came to the United States with a young wife, Christiana, and two young children.

In 1860 John Yontz (64) owned a farm worth $600 in Seneca Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Other members of the household were Christina (45), Mary (13) and John (5) Yontz. Mary attended school. All were natives of Bavaria except young John, who was born in Ohio. A son from John's first marriage, Joseph Yontz, lived in the adjacent household in the census.

The family has not been found in the 1870 census for Monroe County.


Mary Meakelin

Mary's maiden name is illegible on her daughter Matilda's death certificate. It begins with an M and may start with Mea... may end with ...lin


John P. Schott

The 1910 census lists 25 year old John P. Shott, his 17 year old wife Clara, and their infant son Edgar in the household.

In 1920, 35 year old John P. Scholl (Schott) lived with his wife Clara (28) on a farm they owned in Enoch Twp., (Caldwell RFD 1), Noble co., Ohio. Living with them were their children Edgar (11), Florentine (9), Harold )5), and Wilmot (Wilma) (2). The 3 older children attended school. All members of the household as well as John's parents and Clara's father were born in Ohio. Clara's mother was born in Germany. Living on nearby farms were Albert and Mollie Schott Roehrig. John and Mollie were siblings. Also living nearby was Mary Schott, widow of John's cousin Henry L. Schott. Living with Mary was her sister Rosina Smith.

In 1930, John P. (45) and Clara C. Schott (38) owned a farm in Spencer Twp., Guernsey County, Ohio where they lived with their children Edgar A. (21), Florentine M. (19), Harold C. P. (15), Wilma V. (12), Mary E. M. (7), and C. Eloise (3). Harold and Wilma attended school. John was employed as a teamster for a pipeline company. The Schott family owned a radio set.

The following appeared in The Times Recorder newspaper on October 20, 1935: THROWS OUT WARRANT A peace warrant sworn out by John T. Schott, Ava, against his
two stepsons, John and Joe Gamary, was thrown out by Mayor
S. D. Danford Monday afternoon. Schott swore out the warrant
and had the boys arrested by Sheriff Clint Clucas following a
family quarrel Saturday.


John Schott did not have a German accent, although his sister Mollie (Amelia) did.

When they lived in Ava, John Schott had a radio, and neighbors would visit in the evening to hear radio programs. The family of Homer Perkins often came over to listen to the prizefights. Homer's daughter, Dorothy, and John's son Harold began courting, and eventually married.

According to the Zanesville Signal (pg 5) 22 Feb 1940, Julia Gramary Schott applied for a divorce.
SEEKS DIVORCE
Julia Schott has filed suit in common pleas court asking for a divorce from
John P. Schott… They were married at St. Mary’s W.Va. Oct. 21, 1935.
She asked for restoration of her maiden name, Julia Gamary. W. Vernon Archer
is attorney for the plaintiff.


John P. Schott's obituary appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal on September 14, 1959: John P. Schott, 75, of Ava died Monday at 2:45 a.m. in Cambridge Community
Hospital after an extended illness. The son of Peter and Margaret Yeagle Schott, he was born near Fulda on Aug.
12, 1884. Mr. Schott, a retired timber worker, was a member of Corpus Christi
Catholic Church of Belle Valley. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Julia Schott, four daughters, Mrs. Florence Krofft of
near Zanesville, Mrs. Mary Evelyn Hesson of Elba, Mrs. Wilma Dolney of Canton
and Mrs. Eloise Miller of Elkhart, Ind. one son, Edgar Schott of Sebring; two sisters,
Mrs. Molly Roehrig of Caldwell Route 4 and Mrs. Veronica Kress of Caldwell, one
brother, Clarence Schott of Caldwell, 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. The body was taken to the McVay Funeral Home in Caldwell, where it will remain
until the hour of service. The rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday. Services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church by Rev.
Fr. James A. Dirker. Burial will be in Olive Cemetery.

His name appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 12 Mar 1930 in a list of disabled veterans who had not filed a claim for government relief.

In 1930, 31(sic) year old farmer Earnest Schott lived with his wife Mary M. (21) in a home they owned (value $400) in Noble Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. Both Earnest and Mary were born in Ohio as were Earnest's parents. According to the census, Mary's parents were born in the US. Earnest worked as a laborer but the census is illegible as to the industry he worked in. The family owned a radio.

At the time of his mother's 1933 obituary, Ernest lived in Ava (Noble County) Ohio.

Ernest Schott's obituary appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on April 23, 1955 NOBLE COUNTY VETERAN DIES CALDWELL Ernest Schott, 65, of Ava, a retired farmer, died
at 11:30 o'clock last night in Oakland Veterans hospital at
Pittsburgh following a year's illness. Mr. Schott was a veteran of World War I. He was a son of
Peter and Margaret Yeagle Schott and was a life resident of
Noble county. He was a member of the Ava Methodist church. Surviving are his widow, Mary; a son Edward of the home;
two sisters, Mrs. Fronia Kress of Caldwell and Mrs. Mollie
Roehrig of near Caldwell, and two brothers, Clarence Schott
of Caldwell and John of Ava. A son Norman was killed in an automobile accident on
Aug. 20. 1952. The body was removed to the McVay funeral home here.
Services will be held at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon at the
Ava Methodist church. Rev. Floyd R. Gaugler will officiate.
Burial will be in Halley's Ridge cemetery.

The following article appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal on July 17, 1937 RECEIVES BURNS Mrs. Ernest Schott of the Ava community received severe burns about
the face and neck when she was preparing jelly at her home.


Obituary:
CALDWELL - Mary Schott, 72, of Ava, died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, at the
home of her son, Ed Schott of Caldwell Route 4. Death was due to natural
causes.
A member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church of Belle Valley, Mrs. Schott
was born Jan. 3, 1909, near Ava, a daughter of John and Mary Glandura Chles-
tela. Her husband, Ernest, preceded her in death.
Surviving in addition to her son are three grandchildren, one great-grandchild,
and one half sister, Julia Kachovec of Cumberland Route 2.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at McVay Funeral Home
at Caldwell where wake services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday. A Mass of Christian
Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Father Gene
Mullett as celebrant. Burial will be in Halleys Ridge Cemetery.


Norman D. Schott

The following birth announcement appeared in the Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on January 4, 1934 Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Schott, near Fulda, announce the birth
of a son at their home on New Year's Day.

NOBLE COUNTY YOUTH DIES IN WRECK
Three Hurt As Autos Hit Head-On
Patrol Reports Driver Fell Asleep At Wheel
An 18 year old Ava youth was killed and 10 others
injured in a wholesale series of traffic accidents in the
Zanesville area in the past 24 hours.
Norman D. Schott, a Belle Valley high school
basketball player, died instantly when his auto was involved
in a head-on crash on U.S. Route 40 four miles east of
Zanesville at 1 10 o’clock Sunday morning.
Three others were injured in the crash. They were
Jerry L. Smith, of the other car, lacerations of the left forearm,
his wife, 21, severe bodily bruises, and their nephew, Richard
Morel, 8, possible internal injuries.
All were brought to Bethesda hospital in a Mader-
Peoples ambulance and were later dismissed. Three others
riding in the Smith auto, Mrs. Evelyn Morel, 27, and her two
other children, Jackie, 4, and Patsy, 7, all of Williamsburg,
were unhurt.
The state highway patrol said Schott apparently
went to sleep at the wheel and crossed the center line into
the path of the eastbound Smith auto. The Schott auto
overturned.
The Ava youth was riding alone at the time of the
crash. The body was removed to the Mader-Peoples funeral
home and later taken to the McVay funeral home in Caldwell.
Young Schott was the 15th traffic victim in rural Mus-
kingum county this year. He was the son of Ernest and Mary
Schott of Ava, who survive. He would have been a senior at
Belle Valley this fall. Also surviving are one brother, Edward,
of the home, and the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
John Chestela of Ava.
The body will be taken to the family home from the
McVay funeral home today. Services will be conducted at
the Ava Methodist church at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon
with Rev. Claire Gray officiating. Burial will be in Halley’s
Ridge cemetery.


Willis Leasure

In 1900, 37 year old farmer William Leisure lived on a farm that he owned in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 35 year old German-born wife Mary and their two children, Clara (7) and Lawrence (6). William and Mary could both read and write English.

A note in the "Memory Lane" column of the Zanesville Signal on 27 Jul 1959 stated:
TWENTY YEARS AGO... Willis W. and Mary Swick Leasure
observed their golden wedding anniversary in Caldwell.


Mary A. Swick

Mary Zwick was a blue-eyed blond. Her granddaughter, Clara Schott Miller says that Mary came to America when she was about 16 with her brother and sister. According to the census, she arrived in America in 1881. In 1948, she lived in Mt. Ephraim, OH, according to the obituary of her grandson, Harold Schott). Mt. Ephraim is in Champaign Co., OH. When older, Mary lived in Oil City, Venango Co., PA.

Mary was a resident of Noble County, Ohio at the time of her death.


Edgar Albert Schott

In 1930, Edgar Schott (21) lived with his parents and younger siblings on the family farm in Spencer Twp., Guernsey Co., Ohio. Edgar was employed as a pin puller at a coal mine.

From The Zanesville Times Recorder, pg 11 B, 24 Nov 1939:
MAYOR’S COURT
CALDWELL - Raymond Miller of Sarahsville, who
figured in a wreck Wednesday morning and was found to
be intoxicated by a state highway patrolman from Cambridge,
was found guilty in Mayor S. D. Danford’s court and fined $25
and costs. His license will be revoked.
The machine damaged in the wreck belonged to
Edgar A. Schott. Miller, when arraigned before Mayor Danford,
entered a plea of not guilty, but signed a waiver and consented
to be tried in Mayor’s court. The evidence submitted was found
sufficient to convict him.

The 1948 obituary of his brother Harold refers to Edgar as "William Edgar of Sebring".

The following article appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on January 23, 1961: FIRE LOSS HEAVY SEBRING, Ohio (UPI) -- Loss due to a fire which swept through
a block-long building housing three business firms here Saturday
night was tentatively set a several hundred thousand dollars. The blazed wiped out the Stanford Pottery Co., the Sebring Con-
tainer Co., and the East Ohio Engineering Co. Edgar Schott, 56, was temporarily trapped when he tried to
carry out some company records due to the flames and smoke. He
finally escaped by breaking a window but suffered a severe arm
cut in the process.


Edgar Schott was married and a resident of Alliance, Stark County, Ohio at the time of his death.

Obituary of the father of Mrs. Edgar Schott:

T.M. Wills Is Called By Death
Cambridge, O. --T.M. (Tuck) Wills, former Buffalo
merchant and well known Guernsey county man, died
Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edgar Schott,
Sebring.
The body was brought to the Herlan funeral home
in Byesville and later returned to the family home in Buffalo.
In addition to his widow, Mrs. Bertha Wills, and his
daughter, Mrs. Schott, a granddaughter and two sisters, Mrs.
Morgan Wilson, 1901 Beatty avenue, and Mrs. Lela Young,
West Pike, Cambridge, also survive.


Shirley Schott

Florentine Mary Schott

The following article appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal on October 20, 1931 GASOLINE EXPLODES Miss Florentine Schott, daughter of John Schott, narrowly escaped severe burns Saturday when a pan of gasoline in which she was cleaning a cap exploded when placed near a stove.

Also known as Florence. Unmarried and living in Zanesville, Ohio in 1948. She was the third wife of Norris Krofft, the first being Grace Wilson (ref 1930 census) who died 25 Apr 1948 and the second Helen Pearl Sites whom he later divorced.

The following appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on Aug 13, 1954: THREE COUPLES APPLY FOR MARRIAGE LICENSES Three couples filed application in probate court for marriage licenses. They are: . . . Norris E. Krofft, 59, of 1530 Linden avenue and Florentine Schott, 44, of 961 1/2 Linden avenue.
