WOMAN AND CHILD SERIOUSLY HURT IN AUTO CRASH
Mrs. Harry McPeek and Infant, Injured
Runaway Truck Hit Auto at Cherry Hill

Mrs. Harry McPeek, of 1265 Central avenue, the wife of Harry
McPeek, ground keeper at the Mark Grey baseball field in Putnam
and her two-months-old granddaughter were seriously injured at
5 o’clock Tuesday evening, when the automobile in which they
were riding was struck by a heavy truck, containing three colored
men, whose names could not be learned. Mrs. McPeek sustained
a broken arm and dislocated shoulder while her little granddaughter
was badly cut and bruised about the head and face.
The accident occurred at Cherry Hill farm, near Black Run, and it
is said the truck was coming down a steep hill when the brakes failed
to work. The machine gained considerable speed on the steep de-
cline and the occupants of the McPeek car, seeing the truck approaching
at a rapid rate of speed stopped their car and attempted to leave the
machine to avoid injury in the accident which appeared certain. The
other occupants of the machine succeeded in escaping from the car,
but Mrs. McPeek, who was carrying the infant, was unable to get out
before the crash.
She was thrown from the machine to the ground, but succeeded in
protecting the little child from more serious injury. Mrs. McPeek and
the child were removed to a nearby farm house where a physician
was summoned. The condition of both is such that they were unable
to be removed to their homes and will be forced to remain there until
the extent of their injuries can be determined.
