John A. Ebbert

Sources conflict on surname:
Everett -- Snider, citing church records
Ebbert -- obituary of Elizabeth's sister, Barbara Miller Schafer

There is evidence that suggests that the following family is that of Elizabeth Miller Ebbert:
1) The surname matches that in the obituary of Barbara Miller Schafer.
2) Elizabeth's birthdate in the 1900 census matches church records at St. Mary's in Fulda
3) Elizabeth's birthplace in the 1900 census is Ohio.
4) Barbara Miller Schafer's obituary states that her sister Elizabeth Ebbert lived in Braddock, PA.

In 1900, John Ebbert (31), a native of West Virginia, rented part of a home at 543 California Ave. in the 11th ward of Allegheny City, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He lived with his wife, Elizabeth, (32), and children Harvey (8), John W. (6), Emil C. (4), and Loretta (1). Only Harvey attended school. The oldest three children were born in West Virginia; Loretta was born in Pennsylvania. John and Elizabeth had been married for nine years. John worked as a day laborer who had been unemployed for two months in the previous year.

Ten years later, the family rented a home on the same street... this time at 562 California Ave. Although the census states that all five of Elizabeth's children were living, the names and ages don't quite match up with the 1900 census. The children listed in 1910 were Harvey (12), Amuel (10), Loretta (4), Walter (3), and Daniel (2). In addition, everyone in the family was born in Pennsylvania, as were their parents. One wonders if the family was not at home when the census taker came around, and the information was gathered from a neighbor. (This was permitted according to census-taker guidelines.) John was employed as a laborer in a forge shop.

Things were "back to normal" at the time of the 1920 census. The Ebberts owned a home at 3261 Richardson Ave. in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The family consisted of John A. (51), Elizabeth (52), Loretta (21), Walter (18), and Daniel J. (12). Only Daniel attended school. Birthplaces match those of the 1900 census, with the youngest two children being born in Pennsylvania. John was a laborer in a pickle factory.

Elizabeth Miller

By the time of the 1900 census, Elizabeth had given birth to 4 children, all of whom were still living.

In 1930, widow Elizabeth Ebbert (62) owned a home worth $6000 at 3261 Richardson Ave., Pittsburgh, PA, where she lived with her son Daniel (23). A portion of the house was rented out to the Green family (James, Maria, and daughter Margaret).

John W. Ebbert

John appears with the family only in the 1900 census. He is not enumerated with the family in any subsequent years.

Daniel J. Ebbert

In 1930, Daniel Ebbert (23) lived in the home of his widowed mother at 3261 Richardson Ave. in Pittsburgh. Daniel worked as a polisher in a furnace.
