In 1900, Joseph H. Kress was a boarder at 115 Camp Ave., Braddock, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He lived with the family of Leonard and Catherine (Singer) Schafer. Joseph's occupation was wholesale liquor dealer. Also living in the household was Edward P. Kress (son of Casper Kress). The relationship between Joseph and Edward is not known.

At the time of the 1910 census, Joseph H. Kress (37) and his wife Hannah E. (26) rented a farm in Red Oak Twp., Cedar County, Iowa. Also living in the house were their children Stella A. (5), Roy H. (4), and Joseph J. (6 mos.), and Joseph's brother-in-law, James C. Smithberger (20). Both men worked as farmers. Everyone in the household was a native of Ohio except the baby Joseph, who was born in Iowa. According to the census, this was the first marriage for both Joseph and Hannah. Hannah had given birth to three children, all of whom were living at the time of the census.
