BARNESVILLE YOUTH DROWNS DESPITE RESCUE ATTEMPTS
BARNSEVILLE, O., (Special) - Charles Joseph Mehler,
19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Mehler of 131 Cemetery avenue,
was drowned Sunday afternoon as his 17-year-old brother Donald
watched from the banks of an old strip mine pit a mile west of
Barnesville.
Beryl Giesey, Barnesville traffic officer said the youth
apparently stepped off the edge of a huge boulder or ledge, struck
his head and sank in eight feet of water about 15 feet from shore.
Wading along shore nearby was Robert Miller, 19, also
from Barnesville. His brother, Tom, was on the shore with the younger
Mehler boy.
No one else was present at the pit. Two of the boys tried
to pull the victim to the surface while the third ran for help. Willis
Broomhall, William Farson and Fred Smith all of Barnesville, brought
a boat to the scene and recovered the body. Barnesville firemen were
unable to revive the youth with an inhalator. The accident occurred
at 3:20 p.m. (DST) and the body was recovered 45 minutes later.
His parents were visiting relatives at Fulda in Noble county
when the tragedy occurred. The victim was associated with his father
as a carpenter and cabinet-maker. He had attended Barnesville schools.
A native of Noble county, he was born Oct. 15, 1938. The body was
taken to the Campbell funeral home.
