Notes

Austin Ludwig Cunningham

In 1900, Austin Cunningham (29) and Maggie (28), his wife, lived on a rented farm in Olive Twp., Noble County, Ohio with their children Clyde (8), Wesley (5), Elza (5) and Blanche. Only Clyde attended school. A lodger named Margaret Shriver (67, divorced) lived with the family.

In 1910, Austin Cunningham (38) and his wife Maggie M. (37) lived in Olive Twp. with their children Clyde (19), Elza (15) and Wesley (15), Blanche (13), George (7), and Jessie (2) All the children attended school except Clyde and Jessie. The three oldest boys had the occupation of "farm laborer." Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Martin McAtee and Alfred Blake.

At the time of the 1920 census, Ostin L. Cunningham and his wife Maggie (both age 49) owned a farm in Olive Township where they lived with their children Wesley (25), Elza (25), George (17), and Jessica (12). The two youngest children attended school. Neighboring farms in the census were those of Alfred Blake and John and Eva (Ruppel) Lorey.

In 1930, Austin L. and Maggie Cunningham (both 59 years old) owned a farm in Olive with their two unmarried adult children, Wesley B. (35) and Jessie M. (22). Austin and Maggie were married when they were 19 years old. Unlike many of their neighbors, the Cunningham family owned a radio set. Adjacent households in the census were those of Joseph and Catherine (Fox) Shafer, and Ritta Haga and her sister Ritta Brown.

The following article appeared in The Zanesville Signal on 14 Mar 1938:
CONDITION IMPROVES
Austin Cunningham, well known farmer of the Dudley community, is
improving at Good Samaritan hospital in Zanesville from a major operation
for the restoration of his eyesight. The operation was considered successful.
He was visited Saturday by his daughter and son, Mrs. Cecil Finley of Belle
Valley, and Elza Cunningham of Dudley.

Margaret Estadt

Following the death of her mother, Maggie Estadt moved to Noble County with her father. She lived with her Uncle Florian Estadt for a while, and later lived with the Kluber family.

Maggie gave birth to six children, all of whom were alive at the time of the 1910 census.

According to the 1920 census, Maggie was born in Ohio, her father in Germany, and her mother in Kentucky.

From The Zanesville Times Recorder, 8 Apr 1930, pg 13
Mrs. Austin Cunningham has returned from Toledo and Bowling Green
where she visited her sons, George and Clyde Cunningham and families. Mrs.
Cunningham also visited with Mrs. Fern Ward at Columbus before her return.

The 1930 census entry for the Cunningham states that Maggie was born in Kentucky and her father was born in Germany. It also states (erroneously) that her mother was a native of Kentucky.

From The Zanesville Signal, 21 Oct 1939 (pg 3)
Mrs. Cecil Finley and sons, Jimmie and Teddie, of Belle Valley, and Mrs.
Austin Cunningham of Dudley were dinner guests Thursday at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. John Parks, North street.

By 1920, Frank Bethinger had married and was renting a home at 48 Sherman Ave. in Pittsburgh's 26th Ward. He lived there with his wife Alice E. (36), children Dorothy (5) and Francis (2), and step-daughters Violet Hoover (17) and Ruth Rawie (12). Frnak worked as a carpenter. Everyone in the household was a native of Pennsylvania except Frank, who was born in Ohio. According to the census, Frank's father and mother were born in Germany and Ohio. Alice's parents were both from Pennsylvania.

Frank was not enumerated with his wife and children in the 1930 census, even though his wife's marital status was listed as Married (not Widowed or Divorced). Frank has not been found in the 1930 census.

Alice E.

In 1930, Alice Bethinger (47) was listed as the head of the household. Although her marital status is given as "M" (not "W"), her husband was not enumerated in the household. Alice rented a home at 1908 Gang ave. in the 24th Ward of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Living with her were children Dorothy (16), Francis (13), Elmer (9), Betty Jane (7), and Richard (4 yrs 4 mos). Francis, Elmer and Betty Jane attended school. Alice and Dorothy worked as waitresses in a candy shop. The family's surname is clearly spelled "Bethinger" in the census. According to the census, she had been 16 years old when she first married. The family did not own a radio set.

Florence B. Cornett

From the Zanesville Times Recorder, page 10, 29 Sep 1947
ESCAPE INJURY IN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT
Both drivers escaped injury, but their autos were
damaged badly in a collision on the Ridge road,
about a mile and one-half from Zanesville, at 1:15
o’clock Sunday afternoon, Deputy Sheriff Ray
Thompson said.
The accident happened on a curve in the highway
and involved cars driven by Florence Leddy of Race
street and Juanita Kelly of Luck avenue.

John Swick

In 1910, unmarried John Swick was listed as the head a household that consisted of his brother, Thomas F. Swick, Thomas' wife Audrey, and the men's father, Joseph F. Swick. According to the census, John owned the farm, Thomas worked on it, and Joseph did not work but had his "own income."

At the time of the 1920 census, Johnny Swick (54), his wife Clara (36) and daughters Mercedes (6), Gertrude (4) and Clara (2) lived in Stock Township, Noble County, Ohio. None of the girls attended school. John's date of immigration and number of years in the US were "unknown." Living next door was the family of his brother, Thomas Swick.

In 1930, 64 year old widower John Swick owned a farm in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his daughters Mercedes T. (16), Gertrude M. (14), Clara N. (12) and Esther H. (8). All of the girls attended school. The children were all born in Ohio, as was their mother. John was a native of Germany. The Swick family did not own a radio set, although some of their neighbors did. John, came to America in 1880 and was a naturalized citizen, was able to read and write. There were several Anderson families on the same census page as John Swick. The relationship between these families and John's late wife is not known at this time.

From the “Berne Briefs” column of the Zanesville Times Recorder, 7 Jul 1939:
John Swick visited his daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hughes at Woodsfield, Tuesday.

Clara Anderson

According to the 1920 census, Clara and her parents were natives of Ohio.

Joseph Francis Swick

In 1880, Bavarian Francis J. Zwick (43) and his wife Catherine (39) lived on a farm in Franklin Township, Monroe County, Ohio with children John (14), Mary A. (16), Caroline (14) and Kate (9). Everyone in the home was a native of Bavaria. Caroline and Kate attended school. Note that the children were not listed in order by age, and there are two 14 year-olds in the home. Francis Zwick's occupation was "works on farm." Most of the other men on the census have the occupation "farmer." This suggests that Francis did not own the farm on which he lived. Nearby households in the census were those of Michael Zwick and the families of his adult sons, Martin, George, and Marx. The appearance of Francis J. Zwick has been a source of confusion because Michael also had a son named Francis Joseph (b. 1842), who lived near his father and brothers in the 1870 census. That Francis -- who was married Margaret Schoeppner -- had moved to Noble County by 1880.

At the time of the 1900 census, widower Joseph Zwick (63) lived on a rented farm in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his unmarried son Thomas (18).

In 1910, 73 year old widower Joseph F. Swick lived on a farm owned by his unmarried son John in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Joseph's son Thomas and his new wife also lived with them.
