Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

Rufus Merry

The 1840 census names only the head of household. Other inhabitants were counted, but not named. In 1840, the family of Rufus Merry lived in Enoch Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. There were 11 people in the household:
1 male under age 5
1 male between 5 and 10
1 male between 30 and 40 (presumably Rufus)
1 female under age 5
2 females between 5 and 10
3 females between 10 and 15
1 female between 15 and 20
1 female between 30 and 40 (presumably Rufus' wife)

In 1850, 49 year old farmer Rufus Mary lived in Enoch Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with Sarah (45) and children Elijah (17), Eleanor (15), Lydia (13), Ambrose (10), and Elizabeth (7). All the children except Elizabeth attended school. Also living in the household was 21 year old Caroline Mary and 6 year old Rufus Brown (? - unclear).

Noble County was founded in 1851, and Enoch Twp., formerly in Monroe County, became part of the new Noble County.

The family still lived in Enoch Twp. in 1860. At the time of the 1860 census, the Merry household consisted of Rufus Merry (60), Sarah M. (55), Elizabeth (17), Cawlin (12) and a 15 year old named Rufus Pryor. The 1860 census did not indicate how each person was related to the head of household, so the relationship between Rufus Merry and Rufus Pryor is not known. According to the census, Rufus was a native of New York and everyone else in the household was born in Ohio. The farm was worth $5000, and their personal possessions were valued at $500.

In 1870, 70 year old Rufus Merry still lived in Enoch Twp. with his wife Sarah, and daughter Caroline (20). His farm was next to those of Ambrose Merry and Jacob Fogle.

Birth date calculated from age at death.

Sarah Fogle

In 1880, widow Sarah Merry lived in the household of her son-in-law William Courtney (husband of Caroline Merry). Sarah's father was born in Bavaria. Her mother's birthplace was unknown.

Census records from 1850 to 1880 state that Rufus Merry's wife Sarah was a native of Ohio. The death certificate of Rufus' son Ambrose states that his mother was Sallie Fogle, a native of Pennsylvania. (Both death records and census records can be unreliable sources of birth information.) It is not known if the Sarah in census records is actually the mother of Ambrose Merry. Furthr research needs to be done to clarify the issue.
