The following article appeared on the editorial page of The Zanesville Signal 23 Aug 1958:
LAFE HOY
Many Zanesville youngsters are among those saddened this week by the death
of Lafe Hoy, former policeman who stood guard for several years at Main and
Ninth streets to protect school children at the crossings.
Hoy, plagued by ill health, was forced to retire two years ago, but many children
remember him for his efficient work and personable manner.
Aside from keeping an eye out for the safety of pupils at Pioneer, Rosecrans and
St. Nicholas schools - all located on East Main Street - Hoy handled many other
assignments during his 19 years on the force. His superiors always considered him an
able policeman.
A Perry County native, the 50-year-old How’s body will be carried to the grave
today. There is no doubt that he led a fruitful life since his friends, young and old,
were legion. The Zanesville Signal joins in expressing sympathy to his widow and
other members in his family.
