Anton Kress

At the time of the 1850 census, 38 year old German-born farmer Anthony Grass lived in Stock Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife Eve (38) and children Jasper (8), Eliaabeth (6), Barbary (3), and Mary (8 months). Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Eldridge McKee and John Miller.

In 1860, 40 year old "Anthony Grass" lived in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his wife Eva and seven children: Casper (18), Elizabeth (19), Barbary (13), Mary (10), Matilda (8), Margaret (6), and Joseph (4).

By 1870, 50 year old Prussian born Anthony Kress was a "retired farmer." He lived in Enoch Twp., with his wife Eva (59) and daughter Mary A. Mary's occupation was "helps mother." Adjacent households in the census were those of Ambrose Smith and Anthony's son Casper Kress.

In 1880, farmer Anthony Kress (69) and his wive Eva (69) still lived in Enoch Twp. next to the farm of their son Casper. Neither Anthony nor Eva could read or write. The other adjacent farm in the census belonged to Adam Hartman.

From the "Fulda" column of The Caldwell Citizens' Press on 22 Mar 1883:
Anthony Kress sold his land, forty acres, to his son, Casper, for
$1,200.

From the "Fulda" column of The Caldwell Citizens' Press on 31 May 1883:
Old Anthony Kress is still very low. His daughter, son-in-law and
nephew, from Washington county, were up to see him last week.
The family from Washington County is believed to be Frederick and Margaret Schoen and their son John. (All of Anthony's other daughters were still living in Noble County in 1883.)

On 28 Jun 1883, the same paper reported:
Death -- June 20, Anthony Kress, an old German settler, died at
his residence about one mile from Fulda, age 72 years, 5 months,
and 13 days.


Eva Wehner

Alternate maiden name: Vomer (from death certificate of daughter Ottilia Kress Singer)


John Joseph Kress

John Joseph Kress is not listed with his family in the 1850 census. He would have been 15 at the time. It is not known if he was living elsewhere or if he died before that time.


John Nau

According to researcher Donald Saul, John Nau and his parents came to America in 1858. However, the 1860 and 1870 census state that John was born in Ohio. The 1880 census says he was born in West Virginia.

In 1880, 23 year old John Nau lived and worked on his parents' farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. According to the census, he attended school that year.


Luzetta Margaret Burkhart

After Rupple's death, Luzetta bought property at Shay, Ohio in Ludlow Township (Wahsington County),

At the time of the 1920 census, widow Zetta M. Ruppel (49) and her daughter Martha (13) lived on Steindof (?) Run in Independence Twp., Washington County, Ohio. They lived in the household of Porter Tice (54) and his family. Zetta and her daughter are not numbered as a separate family, but the census does not list a relationship between the women and Mr. Tice. Martha attended school. Martha worked as a merchant in a general store.

Luzetta Ruppel's name was misspelled in the death certificate index as Lugetta Margaret Ruffel. Death certificate informant was Mrs. Martha Miller, her youngest daughter.

Alexander John Crock

In June 1880, one year old John Alex Crock lived with the family of John Schott in Enouch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. His newly widowed father Jacob (24) lived next door with John's aunt (Jacob's sister) Barbara Crock.

In 1900, 21 year old Alexander Crock lived and worked on the farm of his father and step-mother in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio.

At the time of the 1910 census, Alexander Crock (31) and his wife Katherine (35) owned a two-family home at 171 Garritt (?) St. in the 6th Ward of Wheeling, West Virginia. Living with them was their only child, two-year old Mary. Alexander was employed as a motorman on the electric line (railroad).

The family has not been found in the 1920 census.

In 1930, the Crocks were still living in Wheeling. They owned a home worth $6000 at 227 29th street in the 6th Ward. The household consisted of Alexander J. (50), his wife Anna K. (55), and daughter Mary M. (22). Alexander was the proprietor of a grocery store. The Crock family owned a radio set.

In 1930, 22 year old Mary M. Crock lived with her parents and was employed as a stenographer for a grocery.
