Leo Schehl

In 1900, 21 year old farm laborer Leo Schell lived with his parents and younger siblings on the family farm in Stock Twp., Noble Co., OH. At the time of the 1910 census, 31 year old Leo Shell lived with his 28 year old wife Mary and four of their children: Clyde P (8), Edward F (6), Henry W (4), and infant Hellen P.

On September 12, 1918, self employed farmer Leo Schehl (39 - dob Nov 17, 1878) of #2 Summerfield, Ohio registered for the military draft. His nearest relative is listed as Mary Schehl of the same address. His physical description is given as short and stout with blue eyes and sandy hair.

From The Republican Journal (Caldwell, OH newspaper) 15 Jan 1919
Leo Shehl was attending to business matters at Caldwell one day last week. from the same issue:
Mrs. Francis Crock, Bernice Warner and Catherine Sorg spent Tuesday at Leo Schehl's.

According to the 1920 census 41 year old farmer Leo Schehl lived with his wife Mary (38) and their children C.P. (17), E.F. (16), Willis (13), Helen (10), Bernetta (7), and Lawrence (2 yrs 8 mos.) on a farm he owned in Stock Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. Willis, Helen and Bernetta attended school. All members of the family were born in Ohio, as were Leo's mother and Mary's parents. Leo's father was born in Germany. Living on the adjacent farms were Fulda native Marcellus Archer and his family, wife Christina (56) and sons Jacob (40), Bella (36) and Oscar (26) and Henry Sorg and his family; wife Mary and children Catherine, Nick, and Margaret. Living on the farm adjacent to the Archer farm was the John Maurice Hohman family.

In 1930 Leo Schehl (51) owned a farm in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Living with him were his wife Mary (48), and children Lawrence J. (12) and Robert J. (9). Both boys attended school. The family did not own a radio. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to widow Christine Wild Archer and Nelson Leasure. Mary's brother Lewis F.Crum and his family lived on the other side of the Archer farm.

In April 1942, 63 year old Leo Schell of Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio registered for the US military draft. A comparison of the scrawled signature on the registration card with the handwriting on the rest of the card suggests that the actual card was filled out by someone other than Leo. This may explain why the surname is repeatedly spelled "Schell" on the card but the signature on the bottom appears to be "Schehl" (although it's hard to tell). According to the registration, Leo was born on 11/17/1879 in Stock Twp. He stated that he was self-employed in Stock Twp. Leo was 5'9", 190 lbs., with blue eyes, gray hair and a light complexion.

According to his death certificate, Leo Schehl was born on November 17, 1878 in Stock Twp., Noble Co., Ohio to Phillip Schehl and Catherine Schott. At the time of his death on September 28, 1950 in Stock Twp., Noble Co., Ohio he was married. the cause of death is given as "(a) Coronary Occlusion, (b) Arteriosclerosis, and (c) hypertension. He was buried on October 2, 1950 in St. Mary's Cemetery, Caldwell [fulda], Noble Co., Ohio.
