Sylvester F. Burkhart

Sylvester Burkhart's obituary appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 26 Feb 1970:

LEWISVILLE -- Sylvester F. Burkhart, 86, of Lewisville
died at 4:10 p.m. Wednesday (Feb 25) at his home follow-
ing a long illness. He was born in Monroe County Nov 11,
1883, a son of George and Mary Yontz Burkhatt. He
worked for many years as a fireman at Ironton and moved
to Lewisville after his retirement.
Surviving are his widow, Elma Christman Burkhart, and
several nieces and nephews. His first wife, Angela Geswein
Burkhart, died in 1957.
Friends may call at Brubach Funeral Home in Summer-
field 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
Services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph
Catholic Church in Ironton with Fr. Joseph Finan officiating.
Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery at Ironton. Rosary
will be recited at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Friday.

WOODSFIELD - Elma R. Burkhart, 97, of Lewisville, died Wednesday (June 6,2001) at Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Nov. 3, 1903, in Monroe County, daughter of the late George L. and Magdalena (Matz) Christman. Mrs. Burkhart was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Lewisville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester Burkbart; three sisters, Esther Claus, Gertrude Kahrig and Laura Kahrig; two brothers, Arthur and Clarence Claus.

She leaves a brother, Paul Christman of Cambridge; a sister, Beryl Claus of Lewisville; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield. Christian wake services will be 8:30 p.m.Sunday at the funeral home. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Lewisville, with the Rev. Father David Gaydosik officiating. Burial will be in Middle Church Cemetery, near Lewisville.

George L. Christman

Obituary:
WOODSFIELD - George L. Christman, 89, of Monroefield, Monroe
County died at 2 p.m. Frida (Aug. 25) at his home following a brief ill-
ness. Born March 29, 1878, near Monroefield, he was a son of Phillip
and Rosannah Pfalzgraf Christman. His wife, Magdalena Matz Christman,
died in 1957. A retired farmer, he was a member of Trinity Church of
Christ near Lewisville.
Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Sylvester Burkhart, Mrs. Gilbert
Claus, Mrs. Alfred Kahrig, Mrs. George Kahrig, and Mrs. Wilbert Claus,
all of near Monroefield; three sons, Arthur of Wooster, Clarence of Apple-
creek and Paul of Cambridge; several grandchildren and several great-grand-
children.
Friends may call at Bauer-Turner Funeral Home in Woodsfield after 7 p.m.
today. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity United Church of
Christ near Lewisville. Burial will be in Middle Church Cemetery.

In 1920, Leo C. Burkhart (32) and his wife Ella (28) and sons Charles P. (4 yrs 3 mos.) and James F. (2 yrs 6 mos) lived on a farm in Jackson Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Everyone in the household was a native of Ohio as where their parents, with the exception of Ella's father, who was Irish.

Caroline Schumacher’s obituary appeared in the Zanesville Signal on 2 May 1935:
MRS. SCHUMAHER (sic) FUNERAL FRIDAY
Woodsfield, O., May 2 - Funeral services will be held at 9 o’clock Friday morning at St. Sylvester Catholic Church for Mrs. Caroline Schumacher, 82, highly respected resident of Maple avenue who passed away at her home about 10 o’clock Wednesday morning. Mrs. Schumacher had been in failing health for some time and had suffered an attack of pneumonia which developed during the past week.
She is survived by six children, Joseph, Woodsfield Route 4; Henry of Lewisville Route 4, Simon and Nicholas, Louisville, Stark county; George, Woodsfield and Miss Clara of the home. A number of her relatives and a host of friends also mourn her departure.
Mrs. Schumacher was a woman of many fine qualities and will be sadly missed not only in the home but by the entire community. She was a member of a pioneer Monroe county family.
The funeral services will be in charge of her pastor, Rev. J. G. Mehler and interment will be in Mt. Calvary cemetery.

Bernard H. Schumacher

According to the Zanesville Signal (26 Jul 1949), Bermard H. and Florence C. Schumacher purchased 108 acres in Center Twp., Monroe County, Ohio from Edward J. and Anna Schneider.

Bernard H. Schumacher's obituary: Bernard H. Schumacher, former Monroe County Commissioner,
died at home November 7, 1991, at the age of 78. He was a resident
of 407 Holiday Avenue, Woodsfield. In addition to serving as commissioner, he served as Center
Township trustee and was a member of the GMN Tri-County
Board. Schumacher served the County as commissioner from 1975 to
‘83 and from 1985 to ‘89. He opted not to run for the 1990-94 term. During his years in office, Schumacher was involved with many
improvement projects for the County. Included in the list are the
Achievement Center and MACO buildings, the Department of
Human Services building, Monroe County Clinic, Americare Woods-
field, currently known as the Woodsfield nursing and Rehabilitation
Center, and Monroe County Care Center improvements. Upon his retirement from public office, Schumacher had said he
hoped the future of Monroe County included an elevator in the
three-story courthouse. He also hoped for County water and sewer
systems. “We’ve got to have these utilities in order to draw industry into
the County,” Schumacher had said on his final day as County
commissioner. Schumacher was a self-employed water hauler serving the local
four-County area. He was a retired farmer and schoolbus driver for
the Switzerland of Ohio School District. He was a member of the Holy Name society, the Knights of Colum-
bus, and the Saint Sylvester Catholic Church at Woodsfield. He was born January 20, 1913, near Woodsfield. He is survived by his wife, Florence C. Kress Schumacher, whom
he married December 27, 1945, and five daughters, Adeline Jones,
Silver Springs, Maryland; Vera Roth and Bernice Baker of Woodsfield;
Alice Goddard, Beallsville, Ohio; and Anna Hupp, Caldwell, Ohio.


Florence C. Kress

Miss Florence Kress has returned to Marietta after spending a week with her
mother, Mrs. Margaret Kress of Woodsfield Route 3.

Wedding announcement:
WOODSFIELD - Wednesday morning [27 Dec 1944] at 9 o’clock in St.
Sylvester’s Catholic church Miss Florence Kress, daughter of Mrs. John (sic)
Kress and the late Mr. Kress will become the bride of Bernard Schumacher,
son of Mrs. Edward Schumacher and the late Mr. Schumacher. Miss Regina
Schumacher, sister of the groom, will be the maid of honor and Karl Kress,
brother of the bride will serve as best man. Rev. Father J. G. Mehler will read
the nuptial mass. In the evening a reception and dance will be held in the
Miltonsburg parish hall. Mr. and Mrs. Schumacher will reside on the Schumacher
farm near Woodsfield.


Kathleen Kress

Engagement announcement:
WOODSFIELD - Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Kress
of Maple avenue have announced the engagement and
approaching marriage of their eldest daughter, Miss
Kathleen Kress, to Herbert Wolfe of Martins Ferry. The
wedding will be an event of June 24 [1947] at 9:30 in the
morning in St. Sylvester’s Catholic church with Rev. Msgr.
J. G. Mehler officiating.
Miss Angela Wolfe, sister of the bridegroom,
will be maid of honor and bridesmaids will be Miss Mary
Margaret Kress of Wheeling and Miss Joan Kress of Woods-
field, sisters of the bride-elect. Patsie Kress will be flower
girl and Russell Kress will be ring bearer. Bernard Ries-
beck of Martins Ferry will be best man and ushers will be
Karl Kress and Dr. L. P. Block of Woodsfield.
Miss Kress, R.N., is on general duty nursing in
North Wheeling hospital, from which she was graduated.
Mr. Wolfe, veteran of World War II, is employed at the Martins
Ferry Corrugating plant of the Wheeling Steel corporation.


Bernard O. Kress

Bernard O. Kres, 89, of 106 Maple Avenue,
Woodsfield, died Jan 15 at the Woodsfield Care Center.
He was born May 20, 1896 in Washington County, the
son of the late John and M. Jenny Gallagher Kress.
He was a retired atuo mechanic, WW I veteran,
a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church of Woodsfield,
a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion
Post 87 of Woodsfield, and the 40&8 Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary M.
Schumacher Kress February 15, 1972.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Herbert (Kath-
leen) Wolf of St. Clairsville, Mrs. Harry (Mary) Wolf of Parkers-
burg, WV., Mrs. Paul (Joan) Schneider,Sr. of Woodsfield;
three sons, Joseph Kress of Allentown,PA., Bernard Junior
Kress of Centerburg, John Russell Kress of the home; one
sister, Mrs. Agnes Keller of Marietta; 20 grandchildren and
nine great grandchildren.
Friends were receivedat the Bauer-Turner Funeral
Hom, Woodsfield. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday
at St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield, with Monsignor
Robert A. Brown and Father Vincent Huber, celebrants. Burial
in St. Sylvester Cemetery. Rosay devotions were held Friday
evening at the funeral home.
Military services were conducted at the grave by the
Belmont Monroe Council.


Mary M. Schumacher

Mary Schumacher Kress’s obituary was published in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 17 Feb 1972:
WOODSFIELD - Mrs. Mary M. Kress, 75, of 106 Maple avenue, a local music teacher, died at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday at her home after a brief illness.
Mrs. Kress was born Sept. 5, 1896 in Woodsfield, a daughter of Charles and Margaret Glaser Schumacher.
She taught piano and organ pupils and had been organist several years at St. Sylvester’s Catholic Church where she was a member.
Mrs. Kress was also a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of the church and its Catholic Womens Club.
Surviving are her husband, Bernard Kress Sr.; three sons, M-Sgt. Joseph Kress of Bethleham, Pa., Bernard Jr. of Columbus and John of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Herbert (Kathleen) Wolf of St. Clairsville, Mrs. Harry (Mary Margaret) Wolf of Parkersburg, W. Va., and Mrs. Paul (Jean) Schneider of Woodsfield; and 20 grandchildren.
The body was taken to Michener Funeral Home here where friends may call and where the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. today.
High mass will be sung at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Sylvester’s Church with Msgr. Robert A. Brown as celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery.


John Russell Kress

Obituary:
John Russell Kress,64, 106 Maple Avenue,
Woodsfield, died Monday, October 30, 2000 at Allegheny
General Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born July 31, 1936
in Monroe County, a son of the late Bernard O. and Mary
Schumacher Kress.
He was retired from Conalco Corp., Hannibal, a
member of the St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield,
an Army veteran, member of VFW Post 5303 Woodsfield,
and an avid sportsman.
Surviving are three sisters and brothers-in-law:
Kathleen and Herbert Wolf of St. Clairsville, Mary Margaret
and Harry Wolfe of Parkersburg, WV, and Joan and Paul
Schneider of Woodsfield; two brothers and sisters-in-law:
Joseph and Phyllis Kress of Allentown, PA, Bernard and
Evelyn Kress, Jr. of Centerburg; 10 nieces 10 nephews
and several great nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received Thursday 2-4 and 7-9
at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Hom, Woodsfield. Mass of
Christian Burial will be celebrated at the St. Sylvester
Catholic Church, Woodsfield, at 11 a.m. Friday, with the
Rev. David Gaydosik officiating. Interment follows in St.
Sylvester Catholic Church Cemetery, Woodsfield. Vigil
services will be held at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the fun-
eral home.

and Mary Kress Scholarship Fund, St. Sylvester Central
School, 119 Wayne St., Woodsfield, Ohio 43793.

Simon lived in San Francisco, California, area. Five children born to Simon Sr. died in infancy. There were a total of (8) eight children. Names of other children are unknown.
