Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

J. William Johanning

Birthdate and parentage uncertain.

In 1880, 21 unmarried William Johanning lived as a boarder in the home of John Roehrig in the Village of Fulda, Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. He worked as a wagon maker.

From Delores Snider: William Johanning moved to Wheeling, WV in 1881. His first wife died and is buried in Wheeling. He then moved back to Fulda and married again.

From The Caldwell Citizens' Press, 15 Dec 1881
Billy Johanning has moved his wagon shop near his mother-in-law's
house [Eva Ebert Kluber].

The following note appeared in the "Fulda Locals" section of The Caldwell Citzens' Press on 29 Dec 1881:
Billy Johanning's family last week removed to Wheeling.

He lived in Woodsfield, Monroe Co., OH in 1899,

In 1900, wagon-maker William Johanning (40) rented a home in Woodsfield, Cener Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. He lived with his wife Mary (30) and children Harry (9), Willie (6) and Ella (3). William Johanning is the only person on that page of the 1900 census whose month of birth was left blank.

By April 1910, 51 year old William Johanning had moved to Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his second wife Mary A. (41) and children Harry (18), William (15), Ellen (10), Joseph (9), Minnie (6) and Francis (3). Ellen, Joseph and Mary attended school. Oddly, although both William and Mary are listed as being born in Ohio, the "year of immigration" for each is 1840 and 1847, respectively. Since this is before they were born, it may refer to their fathers' dates of immigration. William Johanning owned a wagon-making shop. Adjacent households in the census were those of William Peffer and Leo Dimmerling.

Discrepancy in birth dates. Delores Snider gives 3 Jul 1853. The 1900 census gives his year of birth as 1860; no month is listed. The 1910 census lists him as 51 years old, which would put his year of birth around 1859. He did not appear in the 1860 or 1870 census with the rest of the family.

Mary Augusta Kluber

In 1880, 19 year old Mary Kluber lived with her widowed mother, grandmother, and younger sister in Fulda, Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. She attended school that year.

Joseph William Johanning

Sources conflict on years of birth and death. Delores Snider, in "St. Mary's -- 150 Years -- Fulda OH" gives the birth date as 1793. The 1860 census lists his age as 41, which would make the year of birth approximately 1819. It is the belief of this researcher (Lynn Coburger) that the 1793-1876 dates are those of the father of Joseph William Johanning, whose name was also Joseph.

At the time of the 1850 census, 31 year old wagonmaker William Johanning lived in Miltonsburg in Malaga Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife Mary (37) and children Matilda (10), Elizabeth (8), Cornelius (6), Valentine (3), and William (10 mos). Only Matilida attended school. William and his wife were born in Germany. Matilda was born in Virginia, and the remaining children were born in Missouri. If the youngest child was born in Missouri, the family must have moved to Ohio only a few months earlier. William Johanning's personal property and real estate were valued at only $75.

By 1860, 41 year old farmer Wm. Gohaming had moved to Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 48 year old wife, Mary and five of their children: Matilda (19), Elizabeth (17), Valentine (13), Jasper (9), and Gertrude (6). William was born in Hanover (Germany), his wife in Hesse Cassel, and the children were born in Virginia, Missouri (Mo.), and Ohio. The fact that William and his wife were not from the same part of Germany suggests that they may have met and married in the United States. All the children except 19 year old Matilda attended school. The Johanning farm was listed between the farms of Nicholas Schott and John Miller in the census.

In 1870, William Johanning (51) was still living in Enoch Twp, Noble County with his wife Mary (60) and children Odillia (29), Valentine (23), Joseph (19), and Gertrude (17). None of the children attended school. Also living in the house was William's father, Joseph Johanning Sr. (77). Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Joseph Hohman and Morris Hohman.

By 1880, 62 year old wagon maker "Joseph Yohanning" had moved to Fox Settlement, Ludlow Twp., Washington Co., Ohio with his 61 year old wife Mary. Joseph's place of birth is Hanover, Mary's is Prussia. The neighboring households in the census belonged to the Moore family and a 29 year old Joseph Johanning (presumably his son).

The following note appeared in the Fulda Locals column of the Caldwell Citizens' Press on 24 Mar 1881:
Mr. Semmons sold his property to W. Johanning for $600, with the right to
occupy it until 1883. A few days afterward, the purchaser sold it to N. Schad
for $620.

The same paper reported on 28 Jun 1883:
William Johonning and wife and John V. Kress, of Washington County
are visiting here in this neighborhood.

In the Caldwell Citizens' Press on 29 May 1884:
William Johanning and John U. Brahler sold a brand new wagon which they
put up for $75 to Joseph Werner. Can't beat that.

Mary Anna

The 1860 census gives Mary Gohaming's place of birth as Hesse Cassel. Her age is 48, which would make her year of birth approximately 1812. Age in the 1870 census is 60. Mary could read but not write.

Cornelius Johanning

Cornelius Johanning was not listed as a child in this family by researcher Delores Snider. He is also not included with the family in the 1860 census. It is presumed that he died before that time.

Valentine Johanning

In 1870, 23 year old Valentine Johanning lived and worked on his parents' farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County Ohio.

William Johanning

William Johanning was not listed as a child in this family by researcher Delores Snider. He is also not included with the family in the 1860 census. It is presumed that he died before that time.

Cain Sorg

From the 1900 census: 45 year old Cain Sorg lived on his mortgaged farm in Stock Twp., Noble County Ohio with his 40 year old wife Catharine and eight children: Mina (18), Charles (16), Christina (13), William (12), Edward (10), Emma (8), Francis (4), and Clarence (1). Also living with them was Cain's unmarried older brother, John Sorg (48). Everyone in the household over the age of 9 could read and write English. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Euclid John and Louis Ritterbeck.

In 1910, 55 year old Cain Sorg lived in Noble County, Ohio with his 50 year old wife Catherine, and seven children: Minnie (29), Charles (26), William (21), Edward (20), Emma (17), Francis (14) and Lucy (8).

At the time of the 1930 census, 74 year old widower Cain Sorg owned a farm in Stock Twp. where he lived with his son Francis (35), daughter-in-law Marie (29), and grandchildren Francis (3 yrs 8 mos.) and Freda (10 mos). Another of Cain's sons, Edward, lived next door.

Cain Sorg's obituary appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal on March 20, 1942:
CAIN SORG, 87, DIES NEAR SUMMERFIELD Cain Sorg, 87, of near Summerfield, died yesterday at his
home following a stroke suffered three weeks ago. Mr. Sorg was a lifelong resident of the Summerfield com-
munity and was a member of St. Michael Catholic church at
Carlisle. Surviving are two sons, Edward, of Summerfield, and
Francis Sorg, of the home; five daughters, Miss Maggie
Sorg of Malvern; Mrs. Minnie Warner and Mrs. Christina
Thompson of Summerfield; Miss Emma Sorg, of Youngs-

and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Monday mor-
ning at St. Michael church with Rev. Father J.J. Donaldson
officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body was removed to the home today from the Brubach
funeral home at Summerfield.

Catharina Wild

From the 1900 census: All nine of the children born to Catherine Wild Sorg were still living in 1900.

Sources conflict on date of birth:
17 Aug 1859 -- Snider
17 Mar 1860 -- tombstone

Charles Nicholas Sorg

By 1900, 16 year old Charles Sorg no longer attended school. His occupation was listed in the census as "farm laborer."

William M. Spangler

Sources conflict on date of birth:
Mar 1871 - 1900 census
6 Feb 1871 -- death certificate

From the 1900 census: 29 year old salesman William Spengler lived in a rented house in Carlisle Village, Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 27 year old wife Eva and three daughters: Margaret (6), Clara (5), and Ernestine (2). William Spengler was born in Ohio, as were his parents. He was able to read and write.

In 1910, farm laborer William Spangler (39) lived in Carlisle with his second wife, Lizzie (26). His oldest daughter, Margaret, lived with her grandparents, Joseph and Clarissa Spangler in Carlisle. The census shows a 13 year old Ernestine Spangler living in a convent school in Columbus, and a 15 year old Clara Spangler living with her widowed aunt in Lewisville. Bernice has not been found in the 1910 census.

At the time of the 1920 census, William Spangler (48) and his wife Elizabeth (36) rented a home at 1700 Fifteenth St. SW in Canton, Ohio. There were no children in the household. According to the census, William worked in as a packer in a factory and Elizabeth was a spot welder at the enameling works. The census taker recorded William and Elizabeth several lines apart in the census, and then drew arrows to indicate that they lived in the same household.

The occupation listed on William's death certificate was grocer.

Eva Singer

By 1900, 27 year old Eva Singer Spengler had given birth to five children, three of whom were still living. Eva and her mother were born in Ohio; Eva's father was born in Germany. Eva could read and write English.

Clara M. Spangler

In 1910, a 15 year old named Clara Spangler lived with her widowed aunt, Mary Spangler (68) in Lewisville, Summit Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Other relatives who lived in the house were Mary Spangler's unmarried son, Ignatius (24), and her grandchildren Mary (10) and Edward (5) Spangler.

Bernice Isabell Spangler

Bernice Spengler does not appear with her family in the 1900 census. She would have been three years old. The census indicates that two of the Spengler's five children died prior to 1900.

Ernestine Spangler

In 1910, a 13 year old Ernestine G. Spangler lived at the Convent of the Good Shepard in Columbus, Franklin Co., OH. It is not known if this is the daughter of William Spengler. (ED 129, visit 223, pg 11B, line 60)

Elizabeth Heil

According to the 1910 census, Lizzie had been married to William Spengler for four years. She had given birth to two children, both of whom were still living. However, niether her children nor William's four daughters from his first marriage lived with them at the time of the 1910 census. Lizzie and her mother were born in Ohio; her father was from Germany. The 1920 census says that her father and mother were from West Virginia and Ohio, respectively.

Joseph Spangler

In 1880, 38 year old Joseph Spagler lived in Summit Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife Clarissa (38) and children William (8) and Ida (7). Both children attended school. Joseph's parents were born in Germany. Joseph's occupation is difficult to read... the last few letters look like ."..ister." Also, Joseph's age is enclosed in parentheses. The reason for this is unclear.

In 1910, Joseph (64) and Clarissa (62) Spangler owned a farm on Main St. (near Elm Street) in Carlisle Village, Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Living with them were grandchildren Maggie Spangler (17) and Carl Spangler (8) and niece Fancy Mallet (20). Everyone in the household was born in Ohio. According to the census, Joseph's father and mother were natives of Germany and France, respectively. Joseph was a dry good merchant and Maggie was a saleslady in a dry goods store (presumably her grandfather's). Fancy Mallet was not employed. The exact nature of the relationship between Maggie, Carl and Fancy is not known at this time.

At the time of the 1920 census, Joseph and Clarice Spangler still owned a farm in Carlisle Village. Living with them was their granddaughter, Margaret Spanlger. Although Margaret was married (according to the census) her last name is written out as Spangler. Joseph was a merchant of general merchandise. Margaret was a postmistress. Everyone in the household was born in Ohio, as were their parents.

Clarissa Mallett

According to the 1880 census, Clarissa and her parents were born in Ohio. Clarissa could read but not write.

The 1910 census states that Clarissa had given birth to two children, both of whom were still living in 1910.

The death certificate of son William Spangler gives his mother's name as Caroline Mallett.

From death certificate:
Name: Clarissa Spangler
Residence: Berne, Ohio
Age: 76 years 3 months 7 days
Occupation: Housewife
Birth: 16 Jun 1848, Monroe County, Ohio
Marital status: Widowed
Spouse: Joseph Spangler
Father: Miles Mallett, Monroe Co., OH
Mother: Margaret Headleston, Noble Co., OH
Informant: Edward Mallett

The name of the town in which Clarissa lived and died was changed from Berne to Carlisle around the time of World War i in order to make it sound less German. Clarissa's death certificate is an interesting example of a document that uses both Carlisle (as her place of death) and Berne (as her place of residence and burial).

Daniel Goldman Corbin

In 1900, Daniel Corbin (68) owned a farm in Union District, Wood County, West Virginia. He lived there with wife of 37 years, Eliza (54) and children Gracie (19), Eunice (17), Gertie (14), and Vernie (9). The youngest three girls attended school. Also living in the house were nephews Bill Corbin (35) and Henry Gaudinman (25). Daniel's father and mother were born in England and Virginia, respectively.

William M. Singer

In 1910, 28 year old William Singer lived with the family of his brother, Alex in Oakland City, Columbia Twp., Gibson County, Indiana. William was not employed at the time of the census.

In 1920, William Singer (38) and his wife Emma (36) rented part of a two-family house at 211 South Ninth St. in Petersburg, Pike County, Indiana. William worked as a laborer in an oil field. His brother Alex lived a few blocks away.

At the time of the 1930 census, widower William Singer (50) was a boarder with the Stiners family in Pinckneyville, Perry County, Illinois. He worked as a driller in a coal strip mine. His brother Alex lived in another section of the same city and also worked in a coal mine.

According to Muth & Fox, William and Emma Singer had no children. Note: IOOF Cemetery = Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Emma M. Loos

Researchers Muth & Fox state that Emma Lags was from Pickneyville, IL. The 1920 census confirms that she was born in Illinois to German-born parents.

Edward W. Long

Last known address (1970): 3331 Longview Pl. N. Canton, OH 44720 Dates of birth and death (from Social Security Death Index) have not been verified.

Elizabeth Magdelina Singer

In 1900, nine year old Lena Singer lived with her parents in Sandy Twp., Stark County, Ohio. She did not attend school that year.

In 1910, a 19 year old named Lena Singer lived and worked as a servant in the household of William Saxon in Canton, OH. Lena was born in Ohio, but she did not know where her parents were born. It is not known if this is the daughter of Jacob Singer. (ED 187, pg 2B, fam 38-40, line 58)

At the time of the 1920 census, Lena Singer (28) lived with her widowed half-brother Vincent in Columbus, Ohio. Lena was not employed at the time.

Lena Singer Long had several items passed down to her from family members. One of these heirlooms was a crystal bowl that was a wedding gift to Lena Singer and Anton Muth in 1881. Lena Singer Muth gave the bowl to her niece Lena Singer Long in 1936 after Anton Muth's death. Aunt Lena Muth said that Lena Long was her favorite niece because she had been named after her. Lena Singer Long gave this bowl to her cousin Charles A. Muth in 1970. Lena Singer Long also had a holy water bottle glass to her by Lena Singer Muth; this was given to Irene Fox in 1970.

Lena's last known address (1970): 3331 Longview Pl. N. Canton, OH 44720 Lena Singer's death certificate states that she had six years of schooling. She was a widow at the time of her death. Her death certificate gives her year of birth as 1892. Social Security Death Index, the 1900 census, and church records give her year of birth as 1890.
