Simon Shimp

In 1880, 13 year old Simon Shrimp lived with his widowed grandmother Lurana Shrimp in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Simon did not attend school that year. Simon was born in Ohio, as were his parents.


Ollie Doan

Obituary:

Ollie L. Schafer, 98, died at 1 a.m. Saturday (Aug.
27, 2005) in Heartland of Marietta, where she had
been a resident for the past eight years. She was born March 22, 1907, at Lower Salem,
the daughter of the late Marcellas T. Doan and Mary
L. Doan. She had spent most of her life in the Lower
Salem and Harriettsville area and was a graduate of
Salem-Liberty High School where she was quite an
outstanding basketball player. She later worked at
Marietta College and in addition to being a homemaker
was a cook at Harriettsville High School. She enjoyed
playing cards, quilting and butchering at her daughter’s
home, and — most of all — playing dominoes at the
nursing home. She also loved flowers and her friends
and neighbors and — most of all — her special friend,
Wilma Van Fossen, who checked on her every day. On Aug. 20, 1927, she was married to James S.
Schafer, who preceded her in death on Jan. 27, 1967.
She is survived by three daughters, Betty J. Smith and
her husband, Sam, of Newport, Faye E. Forshey of
Caldwell, and Hazel H. Smithberger and her husband,
Edgar, of Lower Salem; one son, William N. “Bill” Schafer
and his wife, Blanche, of Tucson, Ariz.; 20 grandchildren;
50 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren;
three stepgreat-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-great-
granchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Ethel
Anders of Marietta and Gertrude Eastman of Richwood,
Ohio; and several nephews and nieces. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was
preceded in death by five brothers, Charles, Fred, Moses,
Walter, and Raymond Doan; three sisters, Martha, Lydia,
and Bertha; one son-in-law, Dean Forshey; and one great-
grandchild, Michael Smithberger. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday
at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Pastor
Florence Beranger officiating. Interment will follow in Salem
Township Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 p.m. today
until the hour of the service. The family will be present to
meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8
p.m. Tuesday.


Michael Kevin Smithberger Jr.

He was born April 13, 1984, in Jacksonville, Fla., to Michael and Robin Smithberger. He graduated from Amarillo High School May 31, 2002. He was awarded the Leachman English Award and the Navy College Fund Award. He was a candidate for a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and was also employed at Clairemont. He was a lector and member of St. Mary's Life Teen and was an audio visual operator for Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.
He is survived by his parents of Amarillo; two sisters, Jessica and Felicia Smithberger of Amarillo; his grandparents, Edgar and Hazel Smithberger of Lower Salem Route, Judy Abacherli of Columbus, Bill Earl of Montana and Carl Bradley of Oregon; his great-grandmother, Ollie Schafer of Heartland Nursing Home in Devola; his great-grandfather, Stan Mitchell of California; his uncles and aunts, Raymond and Connie Smithberger of Graysville, James and Lynne Smithberger of Lower Salem Route and John Smithberger of County House Lane; several aunts and uncles in California; great-aunts and great-uncles, Mildred Handschumacher of Warner, Barney and Betty Smith of Newport, Bill and Blanche Schafer of Arizona and Faye Forshey of Caldwell; and several cousins in Ohio and California. He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, James Schafer and Alex and Leona Smithberger; his great-uncle and great-aunt, Leroy and Lucille Crum; and two great-uncles, Harry Handschumacher and Dean Forshey. Prayer vigil services were held at 6 p.m. Oct. 23 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church with Monsignor Joseph Tash officiating. Mass of Christian burial was held at 2 p.m. Oct. 24, with Monsignor Joseph Tash officiating. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home.
