Francis Theodore Finan

Frank's brother, Father Joseph Finan was the pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Burkhart, near Lewisville, Monroe County, Ohio.

A draft board notice in The Zanesville Times Recorder on 8 May 1941 referred to Frank Theodore Finan of 914 Linden Avenue.

Frank Finan had moved to 464 Taylor St., Zanesville by Dec. 1944 (from obituary of brother John Finan).

Frank Finan retired in 1972 after 31 years in the maintenance department of the Zanesville Transformer Plant of McGraw-Edison Power Systems Division in Zanesville.


Mildred K. Burkhardt

WILL WED THIS MONTH
Miss Mildred Burkhart and Frank Finan will be married during the present month.
The bride-elect is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Burkhart of Lewisville, O., and
is a graduate of the high school there. She has been employed at the Good Samaritan
hospital in this city. Mr. Finan is the son of Thomas Finan of Nashport.

Mrs. Bernard Hawxhurst and her daughters, Mary and Grace, entertained Monday
evening at the Hawxhurst home on Hunter avenue. A kitchen shower featured the evening
which was a courtesy to Miss Mildred Burkhart, who will become the bride of Francis
Finan, in the near future at St. Thomas church.
At the party given by Mrs. Hawxhurst and her daughters, bridge and euchre were
played throughout the evening. Later lunch was served.
Those present were the Misses Regina Malone, Gladys Kinnen, Bernadine Mercer,
Louise Heil, Dorothy Kuhn, Stella Weisant, Celestine Kuhn, Eloise Betzing, Georgiana
Main, Mrs. Emma Everly, Mrs. Dora Wince, Mrs. Anna Mason, Mrs. Laura Decker, Mrs.
Annie Hannum, Mrs. Myrtle Neal, Mrs. Betzing, Mrs. Sylvia Maxwell, the bride-elect,
Miss Mildred Burkhart, and the hostesses Mrs. Bernard Hawxhurst and her daughters,
Mary and Grace.

MILDRED BURKHART AND FRANK FINAN HAVE CHURCH RITES
Early this morning in St. Thomas Catholic church, the service uniting in marriage Miss
Mildred Burkhart and Frank Finan was read.
The bride wore a wine velvet dress with hat of the same material and all matching
accessories. Her corsage was of gardenias. Her cousin, Miss Ann Burkhart was her only
attendant, and she wore brown and beige with accessories of brown. In her corsage were
Talisman roses. Edward Hemmer was the best man. He is a cousin of the bridegroom.
Following breakfast, Mr. and Mrs. Finan left for a short trip and after Sunday they
will be home to friends at 914 Linden avenue.
Mrs. Finan is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Burkhart of Burkhart
station at Lewisville, O., and she is a graduate of Meredith Business college of this city.
For a number of years she has been connected with Good Samaritan hospital. Both she
and Mr. Finan are members of St. Thomas Catholic church.
Mr. Finan, the son of Thomas Finan of Frazeyburg road, is an employee of the
Huffman restaurant.


Barbara Finan

LOCAL STUDENT TO BE HONORED
Miss Barbara Finan, 543 Taylor street, upon completion of the requirements
for the Ohio Cadet Provisional Teaching Certificate, will be honored by the College
of St. Mary of the Springs at Columbus on May 31 at 8 p.m. Sister M. Angelita O.P.,
president of the college, will present the certificates in Colonial Hall. Msgr. Bennett
Applegate, superintendent of the Columbus Diocesan Schools will deliver the main
address.
Miss Finan is a graduate of Bishop Rosecrans High School and is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Francis T. Finan. She will begin her career in September at St. James the Less
Elementary School in Columbus.

will receive a B.A. degree in history at the college of St. Mary of the Springs, Sunday.


William Joseph Finan

ROSECRANS JUNIOR WINNER OF SPEECH COMPETITION
Billy Finan, 15-year-old junior at Rosecrans high school, was the winner a CatholicYouth Program speaking contest Sunday at St. Mary of the Springs college in Columbus under the sponsorship of the Columbus Diocese.
As the result, the youth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Finan of 543 Taylor street, will
represent the diocese in the national contest to be held in April in Washington, D.C.
Finan defeated eight other contestants from the Columbus Diocese. Last fall, he won
elimination contests at Rosecrans high school and a district contest at Lancaster. He was
also the Muskingum county winner in the “I Speak For Democracy” contest.
Although other details if the national contest are lacking, it was understood that the
youth will receive a free three-day trip to Washington as part of his prize.


Clements J. Hohman

There were two Clement Hohman's living in Zanesville in the early 20th century:
1) b. 1903, son of John Maurice and Theresa (Heil) Hohman and husband of Mary (Maria) Noll
2) b. 1893, son of Magnus and Barbara (Baker) Hohman, husband of Mary Jakubisin.

On June 5, 1917, unmarried Clemens Joseph Hohman (24, dob Dec. 20, 1893, pob Kuhn, Ohio) of RFD #1 Kuhn, Ohio registered for the military draft. His occupation is given as farmer and his employer as M. H. Hohman, Monroe Co. His physical description is given as: height: tall; build: medium; eyes: blue; hair: light.

In 1930, Clement H. Hohman (38) owned a home worth $3800 in Falls Twp., Muskingum County, Ohio. He lived there with his wife, Mary B. (19) and son Francis J. (less than 1 month old). Clement was employed as a laborer in a hospital. The Hohman family did not own a radio set.

The following classified ad ran in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 4 Sep 1947:
WANTED by Sept. 8 -- Girl, not going to school or middle aged lady.
5 days per week for light house work & care of 3 small children. No
washings or ironings. Stay nights. Ph. 5919-R. C. J. Hohman,
Leonard Ave.

From The Zanesville Times Recorder, 3 May 1948:
ACCIDENT NEAR HERE
Two cars were seriously damaged over the week-end when they collided on the
South River road at Dietz lane, Deputy Elba Fletcher reported. The drivers
were Clement J. Hohman, 53, of Leonard avenue and Monroe J. Howard, 42,
of Columbus. No injuries occurred, Fletcher said.

Obituary:
Clements J. Hohman, 93, formerly of Zanesville, died Sunday evening April
20, 1986, in St. Rita’s home, Columbus. Mr. Hohman was retired from Good
Samaritan Medical Center and was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church.
He was born Dec. 20, 1892, in Burkhart, Ohio, a son of Magnus and Barbara
Baker Hohman. His wife, Mary D. Hohman, died July 18, 1985.
Surviving are five sons, Francis Hohman of Columbus, Raymond Hohman of
Elk Grove, Ill., Bernard Hohman of Zanesville, James Hohman of Arlington, Va.,
and Joseph Hohman of Fullerton, Calif. five daughters: Mrs. Barbara Ramsey of
Fullerton, Calif., Mrs. Rosemary Law, of Empire, Calif., Jane Ann Shreve of
Zanesville, Mary Podijil of Hinsdale, Ill., and Mrs. Anna Mae Hattery of Kenton,
Ohio; 20 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in Hillis Funeral Home where wake
services will be 7 p.m. today. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Thomas
Catholic Church with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery.


Mary D. Jakubisin

According to the Ohio online death certificate index, Mary D. Hohman was of Polish ancestry. The t930 census states that her father was born in Ohio, and her mother was a native of Czechoslovakia.

ELEVEN BABIES BORN IN WEEK AT HOPSITAL
A total of 11 babies were born in Good Samaritan hospital during the
week as follows: ... Mr. and Mrs. Clement Hohman, a boy.

From the Zanesville Times Recorder, pg 12, 21 Apr 1938:
A daughter was born Wednesday [20 Apr 1938] to Mr. and Mrs. Clem
Hohman, Leonard avenue.

From the Zanesville Signal, pg 2, 24 Feb 1940.
A daughter was born Friday [23 Feb 1940] at Good Samaritan hospital to
Mr. and Mrs. Clem Hohman of Leonard avenue.

The following appeared on page 1 of the Zanesville Signal on 19 Feb 1949:
…. Police investigated a city bus - automobile crash at Sixth street and
Elberon avenue. Mrs. Mary Hohman of 756 Leonard avenue, a passenger
on the bus, was slightly injured.


Obituary:
Mary D. Hohman, 74, of 765 Leonard Avenue, died at 8:25 p.m. Thursday,
July 18 [1985] at Bethesda Hospital following a short illness. Mrs. Hohman
was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church. She was born Feb. 15, 1911 in
Byesville, a daughter of Joseph and Barbara Kolinovski Jakubisin.
Surviving are her husband, Clement J. Hohman, five sons, Francis Hohman
of Columbus, Raymond Hohman of Elk Grove, Village Ill., Bernard Hohman of
Zanesville, James Hohman of Arlington, Va., Joseph Hohman of Fullerton, Calif.;
five daughters, Barbara Ramsey of Fullerton, Calif., Rosemary Law of Empire
Calif., Jane Shreve of Zanesville, Mary Podojil of Hinsdale, Ill., Anna May
Hattery of Kenton; one brother, John Jakubisin of Magadore, 28 grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hillis Funeral Home
where wake services will be at 7 p.m. Sunday.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church with Father
Michael Ciccone, O.P. officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.


Francis J. Hohman

The following appeared in the Zanesville Signal (pg 10) on 23 Jun 1943:
YOUTH HURT WHEN BIKE HITS CAR
Francis Hohman, 14, of 765 Leonard avenue, sustained minor injuries
this morning when his bicycle struck a machile owned by William Hender-
son of Route 1, while it was parked on Commissioner street. The youth
sustained a cut on the left side of his face and was taken to his home for
treatment.

Francis Hohman, Leonard avenue and Ted Scott 744 Cliffwood avenue,
who had been in flight training at the Griffin Flying service received their
flight test last week from Examiner Griffin and were awarded their private
certificates.


Raymond R. Hohman

Raymond Hohman was a member of the class of 1950 of St. Thomas high school in Zanesville. In 1951, he worked in the maintenance department of Good Samaritan hospital in Zanesville (heating, lighting, power and repairs).

Raymond Hohman enlisted in the Navy in March, 1952. The following note appeared in the Zanesville Signal on 18 Jan 1954:
Raymond R. Hohman, machinist's mate third class, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Clement J. Hohman of 765 Leonard avenue is aboard the heavy cruiser
USS Newport News which is on a five-month training and good will cruise
to the Mediterranean Sea.

From the Zanesville Times Recorder, pf 23 C, 15 Mar 1954:
RAYMOND R. HOHMAN IN MEDITERRANEAN
Serving in the Mediterranean aboard the USS Newport News,
flagship of the U.S. Sixth Fleet, is Raymond R. Hohman, machinist’s mate
third class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clement J. Hohman of 765 Leonard
ave., Zanesville.
The heavy cruiser last month completed two fleet exercises with
Turkish and Grecian armed forces, army and air forces and a U.S. Naval
landing force, supported by carrier aircraft and naval gunfire, dislodged a
mythical enemy from the Iskenderun Bay of eastern Turkey.


Clarence A. Hohman

The following article, excerpted here, appeared on page 1 of the Zanesville Times Recorder on 12 Aug 1952:
TEN DISTRICT VETS IN FRISCO
Among 2,227 army men from Korea and Japan, most of
them combat veterans, due is San Francisco last night aboard the
transport Gen. W. F. Hase were 10 men from southeastern Ohio.
One of them was Cpl. Clarence A. Hohman of 765 Leonard avenue,
Zanesville.

Dates of birth and death (from death certificate) have not been proven. Clarence Hohman is not listed as a surviving child in the obituaries of his parents.


Bernard J. Hohman

Bernard Hohman, Leonard avenue, is recovering at home from injuries
sustained when his right hand was caught in a washing machine wringer Monday

The following article appeared on page 1 of the Zanesville Times Recorder on 3 Jun 1953:
LOCAL SAILORS ON SHIP FOR REVIEW
When England’s new Queen Elizabeth reviewed a line of 90 warships
of the world from aboard the royal yacht, three Zanesville men were in the 1400-
men crew “manning the rail” of the USS Baltimore, now docked at Spithead, Eng.
The are Howard L. Dowling, of 1515 May street, Leland D. Wright of
518 Hamline avenue and Bernard J. Hohman, 765 Leonard avenue.
“Man the rail” is an old sea tradition where every member of the crew,
in finest uniform, is stationed along the outer edge of upper decks, standing at
attention for the review. When the queen steamed past, they gave three cheers.
The Baltimore has been on a tour of duty in the Mediterranean with the
Sixth fleet until ordered to England for the coronation.

Mary

By 1900, Mary had given birth to only one child (John). Mary and her mother were born in Ohio. Her father was from Bavaria.


John Jacob Weisend

In 1910, 29 year old unmarried John Weisend lived on his parents farm with his younger siblings in Seneca Twp., Monroe Twp., OH. John worked at a lumber mill.

Obituary:
SUMMERFIELD - John J. Weisend, 77, of Lewisville Route 1,
died Friday [16 May 1958] at 6:30 p.m. at the Miars rest home in
Sarahsville where he had been a patient for a few days. His wife,
Barbara, died in October, 1955. he was a retired farmer and a life
resident of Monroe county.
Funeral services will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic church at
Burkhart Monday at 9 a.m. with Fr. Joseph Finan officiating. Burial
will be in Chapel Hill cemetery. Rosary will be recited at the Brubach
funeral home here Sunday at 8 p.m.


Stella Weisend

In honor of the birthday of Miss Stella Wesend, Mrs. Robert Lutz of Bluff
street entertained Wednesday evening with a surprise party. Refreshements were
served and there were pretty and appropriate decorations. Euchre was played and
there were many gifts for Miss Weisend.

Stella Weisend's entry in the Ohio online death certificate index does not state the date of death, only the year. Stella never married.
