Marcella M. Schafer

The following article appeared in the Zanesville Signal on 21 Aug 1941, accompanied by a large photo of the bride-to-be:
MISS MARCELLA SCHAFER WILL BECOME BRIDE OF FRANK L. WENDLING OF CLEVELAND
At a beautiful party given at “The Terrace” Wednesday evening the announcement was made of the engagement and approaching marriage of Miss Marcella Schafer to Frank L. Wendling of Cleveland. The wedding will take place Thursday, September 18 in St. Nicholas Catholic Church.
The guests Wednesday evening were received at the door by the hostess, Miss Mary Schafer, sister of the bride-to-be, and each was presented with a rosebud to which was tied a little scroll bearing the names of the principals and the date for the coming event. The rosebuds, with baby breath, made corsages for the guests. The assistants in the card room were Mrs. George Slack, sister of the bride, and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Lucas G. Schafer.
The guests were seated at nine tables, where bridge was played. The high score prizes were awarded to Mrs. Catherine Kress and Miss Mary Dosch; the second prizes being presented to Miss Ruth Sebaugh and Mrs. Julia Maheney. After the bridge session, the guests were taken to the spacious dining room on the first floor of the beautiful home, where they were seated at antique tables. There a two-course lunch was served. Little China dolls, each bearing a place card, adorned the individual places of the guests. Throughout the rooms both on the first and second floor, was an abundance of lovely flowers of various kinds and in different colors.
Miss Schafer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Schafer, of the West pike, is an employe of the American Rolling Mill. She is a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, a graduate of St. Nicolas Catholic high school and Meredith Business college. She has been active for several years in the Zanesville Business and Professional Women’s Club as well as the Good Samaritan Charity Circle.
Mr. Wendling is the son of Mrs. Mary Wendling, of Cleveland and is associated with the Manufacturer’s Brush Co. of Cleveland. He is a member of St. Clement’s Catholic church of that city.


Helen E. Schafer

WARREN -- Helen E. Roviscanec, 96, of Warren, Ohio, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, in Horizon Village Nursing Home.
She was born Sept. 26, 1907, in Braddock, Pa., daughter of the late Leonard and Katherine Schafer.
She worked as a harness maker for Packard Electric.
Surviving are a daughter, Marian Nicholson of Cortland, Ohio; a sister, Mary Hudak of Zanesville; a granddaughter, Mrs. Jack "Barbara" Lindenmuth of Warren; granddaughter, Charlotte Lilly of Cortland; granddaughter, Shirley Pappada of Warren; six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve Roviscanec; a great-grandson, George E. "Bubby" Rutherford Jr.; two grandsons-in-law, Carmen "Dodie" Pappada and Ezara "Tiny" Lilly Jr.; and nine siblings.
Friends will be received noon to 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, with a funeral at 1 pm.

Mildred R. Schafer

From the Zanesville Times Recorder, 17 Feb 1927:
CHARMING AFFAIR
Miss Mildred Shaffer entertained a number of her friends Tuesday
evening at the home of Mrs. John Hemmer, Maple avenue. The affair
was in the nature of a Valentine party, and Valentine decorations were
used profusely in the dining room. A three course luncheon was served.
Games and dancing were enjoyed during the evening.
Among those present were the members of the senior class of St.
Nicholas high school and their friends. Guests numbered fourteen.


Obituary of Mildred Schafer Slack was published in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 6 Sep 1964:
MRS. MILDRED SLACK, NURSE, DIES
Mrs. Mildred Slack, 55, of 958 Forest avenue died at Fairview Park
Hospital in Fairview, near Cleveland, about 10 p.m. Friday. She suffered
a heart attack while visiting in the Cleveland area.
Mrs. Slack was born Aug. 8, 1909 in Braddock, Pa, a daughter of
Leonard and Katherine Singer Schafer.
She was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic church and the Altar
and Rosary Society of the church. Her husband, George Slack, died
July 3, 1962.
Mrs. Slack graduated from Good Samaritan School of Nursing in
1932. She was employed by Dr. Harry Powelson from 1930 to 1938.
Mrs. Slack then was employed at St. Francis Hospital in Cincinnati
and later at St. Anthony Hospital in Louisville, Ky. She was supervisor
of pediatrics at the Louisville hospital. She was reemployed by Dr.
Powelson in 1963.
Surviving are four brothers, Edwin Schafer of 842 Orchard Hill road,
Carl of Toledo, Lucas of Newark, and Ralph of Port Clinton; three sisters,
Mrs. Marcella Wendling of Bay Village, Mrs. Helen Rovincanec of Warren,
and Mrs. Mary Hudak of Steubenville.
Services will be held at St. Nicholas Catholic church at 11 a.m. Tues-
day. Burial will be in Mount Olive Cemetery.
Rosary will be recited by the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Nicholas
Church at 8 p.m. Monday at Forest Avenue Chapel of Bolm-Bruan Funeral
Home. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today and
from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

The following announcement appeared in the Zanesville Signal on 27 Sep 1936:
Mrs. John Wise, Maple avenue, entertained on Thursday evening honoring Miss Muriel Miller, whose wedding to Lucas Schaefer will take place Tuesday. This was the last in a series of delightful pre-nuptial parties for the bride-elect.
She was honor guest on Wednesday evening at a party at Willowcrest given by Mr. Schaefer’s sisters, Misses Mildred and Marcella Schaefer. This was a bridge and the players were at four tables.
On Tuesday evening Mrs. William Breese and Mrs. Ben Carskadden entertained for her at Crest farm. Covers for 14 were placed at the dinner and roses were given as favors. Following the evening bridge play prizes were awarded Mrs. Wendell Swope, Mrs. Kenneth Bolan and Miss Laura Newcomer and a shower of personal gifts was presented the honor guest.


Lucas Schafer was a widower at the time of his death.


Muriel L. Miller

In the early 1960's, Muriel Schafer worked in the Mitchell Herman men's store in Newark. Later, she was employed as a saleslady by the Small Fry Shop at the Southgate Shopping Center, Newark, Ohio.

Muriel Miller Schafer’s obituary appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 9 Mar 1973:
Mrs. Muriel L. Schafer, 60, of Newark, former Zanesville resident, died Wednesday in Licking County Memorial Hospital, Newark. Born Sept. 29, 1912, in Zanesville, she was a daughter of Edgar and Ola Paisely Miller. She was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church in Granville.
Surviving are her husband, Lucas C.; one daughter, Mrs. John (Joan) Bross of Danville; one son, David of Rochester, NY, one sister, Mrs. Eugene (Opal) Dutro of 1190 East drive; two brothers, Marion (Pete) Miller of Nashport and John W. Miller of 1015 Luck avenue; her stepmother, Mrs. Leona Miller of 792½ Brighton boulevard; and five grandchildren.
Service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the St. Edwards Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olive Cemetery, Zanesville.

Thomas Mark Hudak

Excerpts from the engagement announcement of Thomas Hudak and Mary Schafer, from the Zanesville Signal, 13 Jan 1946:
Mr. Hudak graduated at Lash high school and is a member of St. Thomas Catholic church. He has recently received his discharge from the army air forces and is employed as a plumber at Steubenville, O. Serving in the 289th Bombardment Group of the Eighth Air Force, the bridegroom was a gunner on a B-24 and wears five battle stars on his ERO ribbon. He completed thirty missions and holds the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the Purple Heart. Mr. Hudak served four years in the service, 30 months overseas.


Mary M. Schafer

The following article appeared in the Zanesville Signal on 17 Feb 1946:
MISS SCHAFER LOVELY BRIDE IN ST. NICHOLAS SATURDAY
Miss Mary Schafer and Thomas M. Hudak exchanged wedding vows at a nuptial low mass in St. Nicholas Catholic Church at fifteen minutes before 8 o’clock yesterday morning. Bouquets of Maid of Orleans white gladioli adorned the altar and palms screened the altar rail. Lighted candles in individual candlesticks spaced among the palms, cast their glow on the wedding party. Rev. Fr. Joseph J. Bender heard the double ring ceremony. Miss Virginia Spangler, organist, presented a program of bridal music.
The bride’s wedding gown was of white satin and lace. She wore a finger-tip illusion veil falling from a high circular tiara of orange blossoms and carried the pearl rosary belonging to her mother and a white prayer book topped with a Cattelya Alba orchid. Her gown was fashioned with lace edged sweetheart neckline and long sleeves edged in lace. The close-fitting bodice fashioned in long torso style was trimmed in lace as it met the full skirt in a deep inverted V in front. The full skirt fell into a circular train. At her neck the bride wore a tirple strand of pearls, gift from the bridegroom.
Miss Polly Schafer, niece of the bride, was maid of honor. Her gown was of pale blue silk jersey and net. She wore matching mitts and tiara. She carried a bouquet of Piccardi gladioli.
R. M. Hudak, brother of the bridegroom was best man. Ralph and Lucas Schafer, brothers of the bride seated the guests.
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Schafer, 1288 Wheeling avenue, parents of the bride entertained the wedding party and members of the family at breakfast in Crest Farm following the ceremony.
When the couple left for a brief wedding trip the new Mrs. Hudak was attired in a soft green wool suit with which she wore brown accessories, and the orchid from her wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Hudak will live in Steubenville, where the bridegroom is employed.
The former Miss Schafer graduated at St. Nicholas high school and has been employed in the purchasing department at the American Rolling Mill company. She is a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Beta Sigma Phi, and Sigma Delta Pi sororities.
Mr. Hudak was recently released from service completing four years duty, 30 months overseas. He graduated at Lash high school and is a member of St. Thomas Catholic church. He is the son of Mrs. Michael Hudak, 60 South Fourth street, and the late Mr. Hudak.
Present from out of town for the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wendling and Mr. and Mrs. George Slack of Cleveland, Mr. and Mrs. Lucas Schafer of Newark, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Schafer of Port Clinton, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Schafer and daughter, Eleanor, from Toledo, and Mrs. D. H. Stewart, Fremont.
Mrs. Slack, Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. Wendling, and the Messrs. Schafer are sisters and brothers of the bride. Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Hudak, the bridegroom’s brother and sister-in-law, were present from Cumberland, Maryland. Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Buckholtz, sister and brother-in-law of Mr. Hudak and his sister Miss Teresa Hudak, all of Columbus, and Martin Hudak, his brother from Oakland, California completed the list of members of the family from out of town.
